One other thing.. I just remembered was... watch the rock for a few weeks just in case you have some bad hitchhikers... Aiptasia, Mantis shrimp, Majones just to name a few.. A magnifying glass will help

Well I don't have any kind of filter right now, i have a Tetra 10gallon lmao! That's all!

How will filter floss help? I'm a complete newb sorry =/

Well like i said right now.. all i have is a tetra 10 in the attic with a fresh bag I could find, but that's just useless to put it, isn't it? I could just use it for flow maybe haha! On second thought, I need flow on the left side... Do you guys think it'll make any difference WHATSOEVER? It's a 10gallon filter ha!

Anything I think will help ...
Just a powerhead in there while cycling is not gonna cut it...
Try it, its not gonna hurt anything...

You think a powerhead alone won't cut the cycle? I've been told by everyone that it's fine to cycle this way.. But I'll go throw on the filter right now to see what happens!

It's better then nothing

hey, glad to see you are going the 40 breeder route. I am a firm believer in the virtues of this tank. I have been running probably the simplest setup around and it is going great. Be carefull about the budget though as there is no use in buying something and then having no resources for upkeep. my tank is a very simple setup yet it does take about 40 dollars a week to maintain.

$40 a week?! What are you doing for maintenance??

The 10gal Tetra is working its ass off haha! the sand is FULLY cleared and the filterbag in the tetra is full of sand when i touch it haha! Tanks looking nice right now, sand is nice n clean =D

Do you guys recommend this CUC -
  • Scarlet Hermit Crab:10
    Blueleg Hermit Crab:10
    Brittle Starfish:2
    Coral Banded Shrimp:1
    Emerald Crab:3
    Turbo/Astrea Snail:20
    Cleaner Clam :2
Nassarius Snail - Group of 10:1
They want $120 for that online..

Or should I get this for $100 from my LFS
  • 2 emerald crabs
30 blue n yellow tip crabs
    30 snails

I'm looking on eBay and i see some CRAZY deals even WITH shipping on hermits alone or snails and such.. What do you guys find best for me??

Glad to hear the filter is working for ya.. But you want to put the clean up crew in now?

Oh no no, when I get back for italy which would be the 14th so it gives the tank pretty much a month exactly to cycle.. I'm just making ideas now..

oh ok :) I would shop around a bit more I think you could find a better deal.. I don't know how much shipping is but you get a large Variety and seem cheaper too..BTW check out the tab's on the "Place your order box".. A lot of info therehttp://www.bluezooaquatics.com/productDetail.asp?cid=313&pid=1610&did=2

Both of those plans IMO is too much for your tank. Also, check out the group buy that is going on right now. I know you are going to Italy, but maybe see if Greg at R2R will hold for you. Coral banded shrimp are not really clean up, yes they will grab some food but they do not actively clean your tank. One emerald crab (let alone 3) is too much. Emerald crabs are good for a bubble algae outbreak WHEN you get one. They can be HUGE pains in the butt and three in a 40 gallon could be a nightmare. Cleaner clams at this point would not be a good idea, also you can buy them at shoprite. Brittle stars are good cleaners but can also bulldoze things around your tank when they move.

I would go with nassarius and cerith snails to stir up the sand bed (maybe even a conch), turbos or asteas for the glass and rocks, some blue legged hermits, and some scarlet reef hermits. For numbers, you don't really need more than 15-20 of anything on here(besides the conch which is 1). Scarlet reef are more expensive so maybe 5-10 of those.

So how many inverts should be only tank exactly? 30-40?

Look at this deal I found on a site that's a mix for $100+ shipping.

Here's the email "Purple serpent stars, Red reef starfish, red cling crabs, hermit crabs, turbo snails, olive snails, orange tree spounges, lettuce sponges, gorgonas, rose corals and other inverts that I have at the time of your order."

I think you will be better off picking one yourself. Sponges and gorgonians can be hard to keep and usually need phyto dosing to stay alive. Look at the members group buy right now, the prices you get there are much much better than anything else out there. Packages tend to be much more than you actually need and run expensive. Also realize you need to add CUC almost on a yearly basis as they will attack each other or die off. You don't want to spend a ton of money to have them die on you.

First second third...wait I don't know where to start. ;)

Slow down.

First our group buy is going to be your best deal. Talk to Greg and see if he can hold till you get back. John did all the pricing work for you, these deals are better then anything else you will find. :)

Second you are looking at some stuff you have no idea how to keep IMHO, heck some of the stuff I don't know and I love researching that stuff. KISS is a great way to start. He uses some general names in that last post from the email ... you might end up with things you don't want or cannot keep.

Third some of the things are downright dangerous. For instance many olive snails are predatory.
Waking up to see something eating your favorite coral is going to be painful.

Fourth don't over do it. Your tank will only have so much food to feed your CUC. And your tank should slowly grow to handle the bioload.
I will look at the list and give you an idea of what I would do similar to mnat really good advice there too.
