55 to 75 upgrade

Electrical Clean up

I started a thread a bit ago about quality powerstrips, to ask about what everyone was using. I finished my electrical "cabinet" and I'm pretty happy with it. My rat's nest of wires in now a little more organized, a lot safer and I learned what I want to do when I upgrade to my dream tank.

I spent $20 on a piece of 1/2" plywood, shoulda went 3/4".
Cut it up and glued in in place.

Got it painted and mounted 1 1/2" off of the ground. All cables are ran up under the cabinet through the 1 1/2" gap.

All strips and controllers mounted inside cabinet.

My wife printed me out some labels for added convenience.

good job Earl. I remember when I had all those timers. You need yourself a new module for the Apex

I have just recently gotten into SPS and I believe I am hooked. Growth seems to be slow but my colors are decent. I tried a couple top-down shots today.

I bought this Slimer and Red Planet from Austin(Ahvrivera) mid-February. They haven't grown much but they are definitely encrusting.

This is the purple digi I bought from John(Jgraz) a while ago. This is the coral that gave me the confidence to try more SPS. It is growing rather quickly compared to my other sticks.

I have a great blue acro from Ultimate Corals but I can't get a pic to do it any justice.

Everything is not great though. My BOPs tips keep dying and I bleached a milli. I believe I mounted the milli too high without proper acclimation. Two days ago a german blue polyp digi quit extending it's polyps as well. Not sure what the cause is for these unhappy corals. Any thoughts or suggestions?

Test your water!

Water tests fine.
Ca-415-425
Alk-8-8.5
Mg-1350-1380
NO3-0.2
PO4-0.02-0.04
SG-1.026
pH-8.0-8.15

I started dosing Marine Snow and Acropower about two weeks ago. The milli and BOP were having issues long before the dosing. The blue polyp digi is recent.

Well if it's recent, can you figure out what you have done different? When is the last time you did a wc? Try dipping the pieces that do not look happy

WCs once a week, religiously.
The acropower and snow is the only change.
All coral got a good Bayer dip before going in.
I may back off of the dosing and continue to monitor.

when you say your bop tips keep dying, what exactly is going on? tips are dying then algae is overgrowing them? post a pic? i don't want to say alkalinity burns since your dkh isn't bad, however a .5 dkh swing isn't so great.

Exactly, cyano grows over the new tips.
I'll post a pic tomorrow, I'm at work for the rest of the night.

I would like to keep Alk a bit more consistent, but is a .5 swing in a week big enough to cause problems? A box of IO I got has some wacky params. Ca- 360, Alk- 12. I've been spiking my newly mixed water with ice melt to raise Ca and drive down alk. I haven't perfected the mix yet. That and the addition of multiple SPS frags could be throwing me off.

Thanks for the replies!

sounds like a nutrient problem. definitely stop with the amino acid dosing. i try to keep my alk consistent with no swings. if i do not dose, my dkh drops by .6/day. try switching salt!

When in doubt, do a water change. SPS are tricky. I had a Green Slimer Acro that turned from a 1" frag into a 6" colony. After all that, with no swings in params, and steady water changes, it just randomly started to bleach out. I give up on trying to keep them lol
