Avatar - who has seen it?

I will be manhattan saturday and was thinking of going with the wife to catch it in 3D. Is it worth it? or am I wasting $50 (tix plus popcorn)?

I'm not sure about what the fuss is. but it really wasn't as good as people are making it out to be. movie is not moving. special effects weren't AMAZING. so is it the buzz of racial "hidden" message? <<only people who want to cry and make noise for no reason say such things unless it's blatant disrespectful manner etc. which in my eyes was not if it was made for that purpose. (they won at the end) so why cry?

I saw it at the Hamilton IMAX in 3D, and I think its totally worth it. Loved the movie and the effects, but you definitely have to be a sci-fi/fantasy movie fan. It is very long so be prepared for that, and yes there are political messages, etc, blah blah blah, whatever, go and enjoy and take it for what it is.

I thought it was great. You have to be into this kinda stuff and youll def like it. Good story, nice action, and all that cloning and sci-fi stuff. More like the jurassic park stuff, not like star trek. I only saw it in reg 3d, Overall its worth the money. besides you spend more on popcorn and soda than the movie anyway, this worlds outta hand lol

thanks everyone. and yes - going to see a movie with the wife is going to cost me. At least i'm not bringing the kids - then I'd be dropping a benjamin franklin.

Good movie but a rip off of The Smurfs

Definitely go and see it. Enjoy. Worth the money.
I am not a fan of fantasy so my husband took his sister to see this movie and loved it ... it took him three months to convince me to go ... I am happy I did ... beautiful scenery, you can tell the writer is a diver .... a lot of fantasy plants are taken from the sea world, flying jelly fishes are soo awesome. :D

So hawkeye....did you go see it?? Want to know what you think.

Being in the movie/Television business as well, I saw the move at the Palisades IMAX 3D. Regardless of what anyone says about the special effects and graphics, they certainly don't know what they are talking about.

James Cameron reached new hights with CGI!! The alien people, they were spot on and you counldn't tell between them being CGI and if it was actually make-up. The motion caputre CGI he used was incredible and seamless. The movements were not jerky or stuttering like CGI usually is. They were fluid motions. The alien world, was also incredible. And like Whitebear said and confirming her statement....James Cameron is an AVID diver. Hence the button polyps, jellyfish, sponges, bioluminescense, etc.

The movie was worth every penny and I can see why it lasted in theatres so long!! And why it made so much money!! James Cameron raised the bar incredibly high!!! And now it is the job of all the other directors and producers out there to try and copy what he did. We will see if it happens!!

So it was an andrew jackson, a hamilton, and 3 george washington's to get into the movie.

Would have been more if the IMAX wasn't sold out. We didn't feel like paying the extra fee to reserve the IMAX tix ahead of time. Anyways - traffic into the city got me there later than anticipated and so we just opted for a regular 3d viewing.

I liked it because I am a sci-fi geek. I noticed a lot of earlier Cameron ideas/ were in this version. For example the "APC/Mech warrior" gear that the humans had (aka the thing ripley used in aliens to beat the queen). The guns all looked pretty similar to the gear that the marines had in the aliens series too. The 3D bugs and jellyfish were truly amazing. Just the whole idea of this other world with fauna that is completely alien to us - it was very well written and made you want to learn more about the planet (ergo likely sequel/prequel).

Now -don't read the rest - as this is just my stupid geek thoughts of what could have been better:

I wanted to see/find out more about all the other avatars - playing basketball/etc. - what were they doing - how long were they there etc? Would have been fun maybe to see them with the rest of the group when they set off to check out the fauna.

They didn't have the motion sensors but had some kind of "radar"...I kinda thought this was hard to believe only because a real "tropical" forest would have enormous amounts of moment/heat signatures. It would not be that easy to pick out a man on a horse heat sig versus those giant elephant thingys. How do you even distinguish if one heat sig is a giant bird vs a human on the ground?

For a planet/moon that is 5 years away - they did not seem to have any problems around ammunition or fuel. It puzzled me that they didn't really talk about how everything was powered. It seemed a little weird that you could just plop a part of a lab anywhere and it would be powered. If there was no power constraints - why not have helos and those mech warrior thingys walking/flying all the time? Yet when rodriguez landed - they had her turn the copter off...to save fuel? It's kinda like the familyguy/parody of star wars when the gunner is about to blow the lifepod up and one guys says "hold your fire, there are no lifeforms"...like they have to save money for lasers?

Also - you are the natives. You outnumber the humans by like 10 to 1. The best strategy you can come up with is to (SPOILER ALERT) ride your horses right into a group of guns in the middle of a forest? But maybe the natives were surprised - i mean if you have aerial superiority (humans) and have a "little daisy" bomb - why do you even need ground forces or than for a director to show a battle on the ground?

Like I said - i enjoyed it purely for entertainment value - the above are my nitpiks around what could have been written better.

I'm glad I went to see it - if nothing more than I can speak to it when people talk about it at a water cooler. My sister-in-law believes there was a big political/environmental message (which she is a big proponent of). I didn't see it like that - I just enjoyed it on face value for an action sci-fi flick.

btw - hijack time - i noticed you mentioned you have a nikon d90. what kind of lens do you use and how do you like it?

I love the Nikon D90. No a pro by any means. Have been shooting in auto mode for a while. I just started using manual mode and it is a bit of a learning curve. The results are awesome.
I have a starter lens 18 - 105 mm and the 18 - 200 mm (the best one I ever used). In short it is an amazing camera ..

Well nikon and canon are both good and comparable. I just liked the feel of nikon better. Feel free to drop by anytime you are in the area (monroe). We can always discuss reef, camera and beers ...

Dances with wolves meets Jurassic park. i saw it twice. pretty cool flick. it was disappointing to see that a trained marine would send a barely armed force up against superior firepower like that.
it was also disappointing that the navi chick that wanted nothing to do with him after he came clean about lying, suddenly forgave him after he pulled up in the new 'benz (that big red bird thing).
i found myself wanting to see more cool creatures, and interesting landscape.

i didn't see a racial message really, only that "humans are uncaring, destructive buttheads" :-\

Totally agree with Hawkeye and mr_X. I also felt like there was not enough of cool creatures and landscape and flying effects. I got an impression that the movie was divided into two parts, where part one was written for decades with all the heart and hard work, then there was the second war part, where it almost like another person wrote it, or they just ran out of money and had to finish it up really quickly ....

I thought it was pretty good. Idk if it was just me but towards the beginning that thing he touched didn't it look like one of those Christmas tree feather dusters? also caught some paly polyps and other corals in the landscaping lol

Saw this in 3d and loved it. Not the most original story, but the effects were ground breaking. I hope it transfers well onto blu-ray because this is a movie that I want to own.
