If your tank is not reef ready and I am sure you don't want to drill it at this point, you can look for an overflow box. They hang on the back of the tank and will act as an overflow. Some people love them, some people have had flooding issues. Honestly I have never used one so I can't really walk you through it.

What you would need:
Overflow Box (You would look for the GPH ratings and how that matches to your tank, again no idea here)
10g Tank: Easy and cheap to get
Return pump: GPH has to match the overflow to keep everything consistent
Plumbing parts: PVC and whatnot, very cheap

Thanks guys I guess I'll start looking at overflow boxes tmm. And hhreefer that's very kind thank you..maybe I can throw a frag or two your way if u can help out bwith this ..I think I had some stuff you wanted

I was gonna add a sump to my pentagon and the guy out at fish factory walked me through the whole setup. He also had the overflow boxes. As does hidden reef. I was already to go until my wife heard about the flooding issues and well killed that idea.
You could also try a HOB refugium. The large one by CPR will probably hold just as much water as a 10 gal sump, and come pretty cheap used.

Totally forgot about that, we ran these for years and they are great.

Hmm well I only have about 3 inches behind my tank..would that be enough. And what places would have these or is it something I have to order?

just looked and it seems its 4.5 inches.. i only have 3-3 1/2 :( so i guess i have to go sump. what size pump and overflow would you guys reccomend? the sump would have to be a 10 gallon tank..thats all i have room for

Yep not enough room. However, can you inch you tank forward a bit. I was able to inch my 44 gal a bit away from the wall when I upgraded my HOB filter to a AC110. You'd be surprised how easy it may be. If you decide to try this the CPR is available at hidden reef. As well a online everywhere. I've also seen them selling on eBay and quite a few on Manhattan reef for a fraction of the price.

You mirethan likely do not have enough room for an overflow box to fit behind the tank anyway, and at that size of a sump it is almost not worth it for the added headaches. Either way, hand on refugium or sump, your going to need to move the tank away from the wall.

If you are dead set on it, an overflow box could sit onbthe end of the tank rather than the back. Depending on your light mounting situation.

well i looked at the overflow dimesnions and it says 3 in wide... i have about 3 1/2 behind my tank so it should fit and i really just want the sump so i can remove the clutter from my tank. ill stick the skimmer in (checked already and it will operate in a 10 gallon, only needs 9 inches of water to run), my heater and maybe some chaeto and live rock. its also nice to have a place for those unwanted guests..like a bouncy ball size "blue leg hermit" -_-

jgraz: do we get a discount at either the hidden reef or fish factory? plan on stopping by today to price stuff

so hh reefer has generously offered to come over saturday and give me almost everything i need except the overflow box for a few frags! you guys on here are so helpful, ill take some pics when its done and post em up.....with the sump comes a fresh aquascape ;) now that my skimmer heatere and hob's will be removed

Welp the sump is in and installed, mostly thanks to HH Reefer, he plumbed it and gave me most of what I needed for a few measely frags..thanks alot man. heres some pics.
