Dan's 150 Rebuild

Oh and how often do you guys think I should swap out socks? Every week?

I'm finding my socks get nasty after 3-4 days and change them. I think running socks that are real dirty too long can give you a nitrate problem. But I'm a fan of socks... they really help keep water clear.

Alright, so I guess I'll swap em out every time I empty the skimmer which is about 3-4 days or around there

So as I was doing my filter sock fiasco yesterday, I was trying to move one of the pipes coming out of the overflow and water started dripping down! I thought I cracked the glass from literally nudging it like a quarter of an inch. Luckily it was okay, I repositioned the pipe and tightened the bulkhead. All seems to be fine. Crisis averted.

Just out of curiosity tho, if I did break that, what would I do? I have to admit I almost cried when I saw water dripping lol

???? I thought Marco rock was good clean dry rock. I was directly across from him at MACNA in NJ in 2009 and that was part of his stick. What's the issue?

Well alls I ever read is that it creates algae for days. It seems I'm getting cyano on all of my Marco rocks and nothing else. I went lights out for 3 straight days, siphoned out a TON and no matter what I do, it comes by back stronger and thicker.. I'm fed up with it

And I'm also starting to get hair algae which is weird bc my phosphates were reading 0.00ppm last time I checked. I'm gonna retest everything when I get home and do another water change but this is ridiculous

Marco rock and BRS rock are the worst. Of I'm not mistaken I've mentioned it a a couple of times here and many many posts across several forums. Your best bet would be to pull them out, bleach bath, followed by vinegar bath. Then rinse out well and give it another go. Or save yourself the time/trouble and call reef rocks or reef cleaners. Both of those come from the same supplier and are handled the same way.

- Phosphorus exists in two primary forms in seawater: as inorganic phosphates, especially orthophosphate, and as organophosphate forms. Orthophosphate is readily taken up by algae and is active in inhibiting calcification. The organic forms may or may not be available to organisms such as algae. Aquarists can readily test for inorganic orthophosphate using a standard aquarium phosphate test kit, but testing for organic phosphorus compounds is considerably more tedious. Moreover, if there is an algae problem, then the algae may be consuming the orthophosphate as fast as it enters the water, thereby masking the issue. Consequently, many reef aquarists may not recognize that they have a phosphate problem, only that they have an algae problem.

I may just get rid of them to be honest. Like I said I'm gonna retest tonight but im pretty sure my phosphates are reading 0ppm. And if that's the case then the rocks are the source I'm assuming
