Dan's 150 Rebuild

Wait has your tank only been cycled for 2 months and you have that many fish? It sounds like your tank is trying to catch up with the bioload too.
No the tank is brand new but it has all of the old sand, rocks and most of the water. Barely had a mini-cycle. This tank has been up for almost 4 months

Sorry, old sand as in 2 month old sand, it was the sand that was in my 135g but then that started leaking so I got a 150 instead so I just swapped everything over

I feel your pain with the phosphates. For what it is worth I had to run GFO before I started my pellets. I ran GFO for ~6 months before starting my pellets. I had a nasty hair and cyano problem all due to Sandy. My phosphates and nitrates were very high though. I rarely see any cyano but my hermits take care of that maintenance.

Almost forgot, your not exactly close to me but I pretty much have whole 1000ml of rowaphos.

I just got in from work, stopped and picked up phosguard. How does everyone recommend I run this? Filter media bag or reactor?

My cyano is taking over. Real bad. I may have to go lights out again while doing another water change/siphoning.

Now I'm lost. Just tested my po4 3x with the Hanna checker and all 3x it came up 0.00ppm when 3 days ago it was at 0.16ppmish

I did do a water change and siphon out a lot and added some more Biopellets 2 days ago. Do you think that the additional pellets and water change helped reduce it that fast? I'm so confused as to what I should be doing now

With regard to the reactor yes,

With regard to your test do it again to be sure the result is the same. If it is don't do anything, if it's different don't do anything until tomorrow :)

Well I shut off my BP reactor so I guess I'll see if there's a change tomorrow morning. Getting my water change ready for tomorrow so I can siphon out as much as possible.

I still
Think you shouldn't have went cold turkey with the bp. If I was you, id ditch the carbon and put phos gaurd in there, and cut your bp in half. Cut bp in half again next week. Get rid of them in 2-3 weeks. You may be right with them not being established, but I don't think it's worth the risk.

I'm going to test tomorrow morning. If it has a reading, I'll cut it in half and swap out the carbon for phosguard. Then eventually get rid of the BP altogether.

I'm not trying to dictate what you should do but honestly man that plan sounds the least risky. The last thing you need is for things to turn worse.

Nah I hear ya man, trust me, I do not want this to go even further south! Lol this is already driving me crazy so the easiest way out is best!

Tested my po4 again after shutting over my biopellets, first time it was 0.03 then it was 0.00(quick test) then it was 0.02ppm. I have to go to work in a couple hours so when I get home I'm gonna do a water change, siphon, swap out my carbon for phosguard and cut my pellets in half

You don't want to leave the biopellets without flow, the bacteria will start to die. If you want to cut it in half, keep it running, remove half, then turn it back on. But do not let the reactor sit without flow in it the whole time you are at work!
