Dan's 150 Rebuild

You don't want to leave the biopellets without flow, the bacteria will start to die. If you want to cut it in half, keep it running, remove half, then turn it back on. But do not let the reactor sit without flow in it the whole time you are at work!
Alright Ill turn it back on now

If they have been off for 8 hours or close to it don't turn the reactor back on. Empty it and rinse the pellets and then start back over. Essentially the bacteria is dead and you would be starting fresh.

Well my plain is to completely eliminate the pellets so if its dead couldnt I just toss it all now?

Yea you could just wanted to make sure you didn't turn it back on. Just keep a close eye on things. I would have gone slowly with removing them like empire stated. Like I said just keep a close eye on things. Hopefully the system won't be shocked badly since the pellets more than likely weren't fully established.

I did turn it back on for like 15 mins. Any ill effects you think? I'm gonna take it half tonight when I get home and go from there.

Okay, I just did a crazy siphoning job and got a lot of crap out. I'm swapping out my carbon for phosguard. It says 1 cup for every 60-100g so how much do you guys think I should do? I think I'm gonna complete shut off my pellets as everything seems to be okay since turning it off

If you have a 150g w/ your sump, accounting for water displacement I'd do 1 cup.

If you shut off the pellets, remove them and dump them in the trash.

your tank is still fairly new so you're prob facing some ups and downs, I hope you get it on track!

I started out with 3/4 of a cup with little flow. I intend to toss the pellets tomorrow. I'm so beat from this tho. Just changed almost 30g of water to siphon out everything.

I feel you, in a complete reef way. If you look at my thread for my tank I've had ups, downs, downs, and now going up.

Toss the pellets, do gfo, take it slow, and ride the wave. I'd recommend not adding ANYTHING until you get it situated brother.

No need to toss the pellets if you think that you may want to use them again. Just rinse them out in you sink and store them in a container. To make siphoning the cyano a little easier so that you can do it more frequently, hang filter sock in your sump and siphon the water into that when you aren't doing a water change.

I fighting some cyano myself at the moment. I also had it on my 120 when I ran pellets and it did go away once I removed them, but it took some time. I think pellets work but can cause issues with immature systems if you go to fast.

Yeah well the sad part is last week I ordered 15 new frags which I just got yesterday! Probably not the best decision but hey my bday is tomorrow :) and of course when i ordered, the tank was manageable.

Should I let the pellets dry out first? And yeah good idea with the filter sock, nevee thought of that. I did a lot yesterday so I'm really hoping it looks better for at least a little bit! Lol

Yep I'd let them dry out first. Whenever I siphon my tank that is how I do it. That way i can keep syphoning to my hearts content and not have worry about the amount of water I'm changing and the parameter swings that can go along with it. Keep plugging away and you will beat them.

I hope so Mike. I just went over and looked thru the side of my tank and saw something floating. Thought it was one of my triggers. turns out it was my eyes adjusting and it was just my seaweed clip that came off the glass Lol

No, but then again the tank that was up before this(the 135) was only up for maybe a month so it was hard to tell since it was so new.

Well I just found out that crypto pro is quillene phosphate. I'm wondering if that could be some of the issue.

Could be. I did run heavy carbon and a poly pad for almost 2 weeks after using it tho. Unless it absorbed into the rocks but I read that crypto isn't supposesld to do that. I'm getting more of a CUC today to try and help out. I lost a lot of snails in the past few months to my hermits for some reason.

I think I'm gonna get a handful of cerith, margarita, nassarius, and emerald crabs. Any more you guys would include? I have a feeling my triggers will make quick work of em eventually but they seem pretty docile to me. Any other good algae eaters? Glass cleaners?

Don't get margarita they are cold water and will die in a few months. Get trochus snails if you can. They can flip themselves over and
Do a great job

I didn't get ant margarita snails, they were all out. I've never had problems keeping them tho. I had them respawning in my 90 like crazy. I got cerith, cone head, emerald crabs and another one I can't remember the name of
