diatoms why!!!!

My friend was using reef crystals and always had some spots of dyno/dino ( stringy and bubbly ) in his tank. Anyway only because we bought a bunch and got a good deal, he switched to tropic pro and after a few water changes it was gone. He never considered the salt a problem but due to blind luck he found out. I couldn't tell you if all reef crystals salts would of made him have the dyno because he bought all 3 buckets at once so maybe that batch was high in somethin bad? Who knows. I Think you should try a different salt for a few water changes and see what happens. Then at least you can eliminate your salt as the problem for sure.

If i keep my lights off I have no issues but when i turn on the mh's and t5's within 2 hours i can see brown growth what can I do ? Lights are fairly new thats not the problem.

Try lowering your calcium to around 430, I think over 500 is on the high side. I know a cal level might not directly have an impact on your problem but you never know, in this hobby everything you do can impact 4 other things. And you said your rodi water is testing at 1 tds? Did you ever test for phosphate ( in your tank water )?

ok so i made a few changes first i cust the mh's back to about 6 hours a day and the t5's back to about 6 hours as well. I tested my alk im at 9.0 my cal is at 480 both are down as i stopped adding 2 part everyday. But i still am getting the brown stringy stuff after about 2 hours of the light on. I dont have any hermits but i do have about 150 snails would they help? I also added a power head to the cheato side of the refugium for more flow. maybe i dont have enough flow in the top i have a k3 and k4 as well as the over flow which blows hard. This is really just frustrating me i almost want to give up as i have no clue why this is coming on.

I will try this. If not then 1 shot for me 1 shot fore the tank. I might have to throw a jager bomb in there. Let me get the no3 and po4 test kits first

lol@ jager bomb...Did you read the dose rate table for each proof of vodka?

I'm gonne start vodka dosing myself. Seen a few tanks using this method and all the water is crystal clear and corals are very healthy looking with nice color. Are there any negatives to it? Any cons?

vodka could also feed cyanobacteria in a major way.

I have been dosing for about 5 days now and yes the water is very clear and looks like a few more zoa's are open then normal. But i still have the brown crap when I leave the lights on for extended times. When the lights are off it all goes away. The main areaas that the stuff covers is the 2 return nozzles and the back glass
