Flatworm Help - Tank OCD is kicking in!!

The flashlight trick I posted earlier...well... I shut all the moonlights off, basement was completely dark...left the light on one rock placed strategically...and...

mythwalrus_2.jpg

few hours later not one single little bugger where the light was shining... 6 line wrasse is next up on the block...

Malcolm put me on to the same method. The product was called GreenX and it killed flatworms dead. Can't get it anymore, company out of business

flatworms are a common pest, but IMO you need to start being more concerned with water quality management rather than searching for a miracle fish to solve the problem. But having resourceful fish such as sixlines or leopard wrasses will help control many pests

::)

I really wasn't looking for a 'miracle fish' I'm not so naive to think that tossing a fish in the tank means washing your hands of the issue, and stamping a big "DONE" on the flatworm experience...trust me... As I mentioned in my initial post, the tank is fishless and I've been thinking about getting one anyway, so I figured this would be a good opportunity to get one and give him a chance to help earn his salt (pun intended).

I'm really retentive about water quality and I test very frequently, do water changes very religously. I have excel spreadsheets I use to track every test I've done as my tank is 3' from the my computer and I do the tests right here... (did I mention I have Tank OCD? - lol) but I think the lack of a skimmer is compounding the issue, and I'm looking for one that will work with my set up and that's going to do a better job then an Oceanic or Fission skimmer....

I've already gone through loosing tanks in years past because I didn't keep up with things, or took short cuts, and I told myself when I started this one up that I wouldn't cut corners, or slack off on things...I've impressed even my wife (which ain't easy...trust me)

She gets aggrevated at me because I always pester her about her tank too... I've gotten pretty good at it actually ;D

I'm pretty sure you can still get Quinsulex capsules, I had to ask the store to order them. They are from Aquarium Pharmaceuticals nd they're cheap. All the blue/green stuff in Greenex did was turn the silicone in your tank green!

If it is blue green is it copper based? I know my dad used to bring home copper sulfate to treat tanks(he ran a lab many years ago). I would be careful in any case.

No, the blue or green is a dye, in this case malachite green, a lot of fish medicines used to use that or methylene blue.

Re: FW Help - Change of plans - Calliing in the Airstrike!

Ok. after much deliberation, and talking with a few folks, I've decided to go with the massacre approach :) I'm approving the use of WMD - Picking up some FWE shortly...

My Plan of attack:
I'm going to make some FW (ph/temp matching tank) and do a FW dip on everything in the tank...Rocks, coral, magnafloats, etc for about 5-10 seconds or so and shake as many as I can out of the system. Tossing my chaeto too :'(

Then...deploying FWE :(

I want em out. I'm hoping this approach clears em up.

I'm going to make about 10 gallons of salt water (29 biocube) for a water change.

Anyone have any suggestions on anything from dosage, to frequency of and between water changes etc? It was suggested to use an entire bottle to avoid them building any resistance, and to wipe them out swiftly, and since it's reefsafe, it makes sense...

Livestock includes: Colt Coral, Zoos, Frogspawn, Frilly shroom, Striped shrooms, Paly's, Green & Pink Star Polyps, blasto (with new heads woo hoo) and various crabs, shrimp, snails etc... NO FISH.

I've got lots of flow, and some fresh carbon at the ready. I have 2 media bags I plan to fill up and toss in there when this goes down...either tonight or tomorrow night/Monday morning.

Are these things going to float around the tank where I can grab them, or are they going to melt away??

INPUT IS GREATLY APPRECIATED...

still finishing up the R/O for the water changes I plan on doing...

Going to start dipping everything in FW to get as many as possible, then I'll probably drop the FWE bomb tonight...

Soak and shake in properly salted, heavily dosed water. When you're done shaking, shake some more. Get as many out as possible before dosing the tank. Then you don't have to worry about the die off and you can leave your tank soaking in the FWE without worry.

I wouldn't bother with a water change for a couple of days, unless you see a lot in the tank that you can't siphon out. But given the dip and shake routine, I don't expect you'll have that problem.

I was going to do a FW dip, but I think I like your idea of salted water better. Then I can use FWE in the dip... thanks ;D

additionally, I think what i'll do is take a 5 gallon bucket of treated water, and break it up into 2 or 3 seperate containers...so all 5 gallons don't get too poluted too fast...

Seeing adesimones new tank today was kind of a pick me up for a bummed out reefer ;D

Brian -

have at it ;D it's all yours

The little buggers were granted a stay of execution. :-\

Work called about 1 hour after I got back from adesimone1's with an issue, so I ended up logging in and working till a little bit ago. I was at home, but still couldn't devote the time to the tank while building out servers remotely (nerve-racking), and I am running low on steam. Besides, I'm going to make one extra bucket of water to have on standby...can't hurt. One more night can't hurt. Me? Retentive? Nah....

Feeling really good about the suggestions and the plan of attack. Only thing I'm not thrilled about is that I run carbon passively in media bags, and I know a canister or hob filter with carbon would be way more effective in removing the toxic worm juice...maybe 2 media bags will be ok

The bulk of it will be in the buckets you're shaking in. I wouldn't stress about the passive carbon.

Interceptor does NOT affect flatworms. That kills redbugs (which are yellow bugs with red heads; the red colord "bugs" are flatworms). Flatworms needs FWE or that new product that Brian's tested.

Yup! It's called Blue Life flatworm control. I haven't tried it in the tank yet...only in a cup with a couple of flatworms...it worked great in the cup...next is the tank.
