Frag rack in sump

I pulled my refugium on my 225 a while ago because my phosphates are always 0. It's about a 15 by 18 area I was thinking of making a frag rack and putting frags down there. I have a kessil a80 I could use to light it. Anyone have a mini frag tank in their sump.

I think it’s a great idea. I doubt there’s enough flow. Will need a power head. Alternate light schedule, to keep ph stable? All I have in my refuge now is a heater. Minus well put a frag rack down there.

I'll probably be converting my fuge to frag section real soon.
Lighting is the only issue I see having. I use T5 on the main system. The frag sect6will need to be LED. And it's pretty shallow so dimmable is a must

I am looking at the reefbreeder aquanight nano led light. I don’t know why they call it aquanight. It’s a full spectrum led, not a night light. I already have reefbreeder photonV2 on my display. They grow SPS and clam at 50%. The clam is all the way on the bottom. The aquanight is rated for 12” square for SPS, and 18” for mix reef. It’s also serviced In Rhode Island. You could overnight it, and get it repaired if needed.

I'll give that a look

It will work I know a lot of people in NYC that have small tanks and no room for a frag tank and they run it like this.

I just ordered my light for my sump frag tank. I’m going to go with alternate light schedule. The lights are a nano version of what I’m using in my display. Same led segments, and same mixing ratios. Just much smaller. I should be able to use the same settings. There is an 8” green serpent star down there, but it shouldn’t bother frags.

I think the light is a little on the weak side. I feel like its more of a soft, lps coral light Going to keep an eye out for a used ai prime. The flow is not bad but I picked a jebao SLW-20 to put in there.

Your flow through your sump is the same as your return in your tank, the sump is a smaller area that has plenty of flow through it so a power head may upset your frags unless they like it rough :beatdeadhorse5::)

I just set my sump frag chamber up today. I put a monti frag in there to see how it does. I’m more of an acro man, but the monti is a little more forgiving to get it dialed in.

The flow is good but is kind of one side not very random a small powerhead will break it up a little and make it more random.

Flow and velocity are 2 different things. Flow is always the same. You put 500 gph in. You get 500 gph out. When it goes through baffles and gets dissipated, it looses velocity. The velocity is what causes the agitation. Not the flow. The coral just like water moving across them. They don’t care how much gph your pump is moving. I have my powerheads aimed directly at my sps. If they weren’t glued down, they’d be blown right off the rock. They love if.
