Hawkeye's AGA 120

I know it's hard to believe but since I put the skimmer on - the tank water appears clearer...surprised that happened so fast.

Monthly update... ;D

sorry about the pic width - been a while since i posted pics. will figure it out.

Firefish Nemateleotris magnifica added: Dec 08 courtesy of Aquatic Obsessions - Free.
Just wanted to post a pic proving he lives in my open-top tank.

Jawfish Opistognathus aurifrons Added (after QT): Jan 09 courtesy of AO.
I Qt'd because I wanted to get them used to a dry-food diet.
His companion died a carpet surfing death the first night into the display. :'(
But this one has been great fun to watch.
He has moved into the center of my open-top tank.

Kole Tang Ctenochaetus strigosus - Added (after QT) April 2009 courtesy of Aquatic Obsessions.
He is by far more aggressive than any fish I have.
Relentless is how I would describe it. I think he hates damsels.
My firefish disappeared in his pvc cave for 3 days before feeling comfortable coming out.
The mouth of the "cave" is shown in this pic - the barnacle.

Yellow Coris Wrasse Halichoeres chrysus- Added May 2009 courtesy of Ocean Gallery II.
I did not QT the guy as I wasn't sure how he'd fare in a BB QT.
The first night he went right into the sand when the Kole approached.
Now he's out and about.

The damsel was added last.
My wife had a singular demand on the reef tank and it was to get a damsel.
We had had one for years back in NY and it had a very cute, determined nature to it.
Perhaps foolish - I agreed - but only as the last fish.
So far he has been a model citizen although is constantly being chased by the kole.

Now to focus on the corals...boy do i need help!

That looks great Phil!

That Kole is really nice looking, very cool pin stripes. I have heard that they can be nasty though!

Great looking fish you have been sneaky with adding fish huh?
You are a lot braver then me with the jumpers, I love the jawfish.
Kole is super looking, hopefully he will settle down a bit for you. Generally they are considered to be a more mild mannered tang, I assume you feed him nori and whatnot, maybe once they all become established is will work out.

thanks guys!

I swear the tang has a vendetta against yellow-tail damsels.
He even swims side-ways underneath small rock formations to chase.

Anyways - the kole is starting to calm down and is even accepting pellets/cyclop wafers.
Though frozen mysis is loved beyond compare.

Knock on wood no jumping out of the open top yet.
The coris wrasse has also been good.
I have not yet figured out where he/she sleeps in the sandbed.

Here is one of the corals I need help with
- the colors just seem a bit off - though the polyps are extended.
This is a frag from Napoli's old tank, Acropora Tenius :

So I just want to reiterate that in the 7 months since the tank has been up - I'm still tweeking things.

First the algae seems to have suddenly gone from green to this brownish hue - like it's dying. This is a good thing. The bubble algae though still appears to be two bulbs fine. I need to pull the LR out again and scrub it off in a separate bucket/dip and re-dip and hope no spores get out. What a pain in the neck. Part of me just wants to toss the one piece of LR infected by it it's inhabited by a ton of hitchhiked feather dusters that my wife loves.

Second - the MRC1 skimmer is sensitive. I finally have it running a dry nasty skimmate and it's been flawless. I couldn't place why the foam was collapsing frequently or running non-stop (leaving a full waste collector) but mikem mentioned the possibilty it was caused by my kalk reactor. Stay tuned while I do some tests. I won't be happy if I invested in a piece of equipment that renders my skimmer useless.

Finally I think the reef crystals is not replenishing my mag fast enough. I'm not sure of this. Again stay tuned.

After 7 months of running the LED lights the only thing I can say is the fish like it and the maxima clam is doing great. Everything else though I'm having a hard/long time trying to find the right position. Basically my corals don't look great. Stay tuned.

In the QT right now are 5 more threadfin cardinalfish. Great deal from memorial day at OGII. I've even gotten them to adjust to cyclopeeze wafers instead of the mysis they were eating at the store.

Phil

I run an MRC 4 with dual beckets and I find I have to squirt RO water into the ar intake avery 2-3 days to keep them running open between monthly (well at least every two month) cleanings.

I use a 10 ml medical syringe and squirt in about 2 ml at a time, let that clear out, you can hear it, and do another 2 ml. If the RO is a little warm, all the better.

Salt, Ca and all the other minrerals in our tanks like to clog the intakes and the beckets too!

Well the QT of the cardinalfish ended in disaster - we went away for 2 weeks to visit my bro-in-law who was going thru aggressive chemo to fight non-hodkins lympho. Anyways - separate thread discussion on that (he's doing better -not out of the woods yet) - but all my fish died in QT. Why? My sitter didn't realize I had a second QT tank and never fed the fish... ::)

Latest news - I noticed some algae like stuff growing in the back wall. It was odd and I took a scraper to remove it. The fish went CRAZY. My wife said - those aren't eggs are they? i said - they aren't orange. stupid me - I said if they are the true perc eggs - she should lay them again.

Sure enough - today - she laid eggs again - same exact spot on the back wall.

Kids are all excited about baby percs...of course I will have to explain the "fish food" concept since I'm not prepared to handle babies.

As Paul B said, breeding fish are a sign your tank is doing great. Sorry to hear about the cardinal fish, seems like there is a rash of bad luck going around right now (I don't even want to talk about mine). I am hoping that my black percs begin to breed soon. We have no space to raise them, but I can't wait until we do. We will have a clown farm up and running some day.

We both need to post some pictures buddy.

Glad your bro-in-law is doing better first and sorry about your QT .

Aren't clowns maybe the best aquarium fish ever? First every kid loves "Nemo", second they are the right size for a tank, third they do so well generally. I understand we all love some other fish because we appreciate how hard they are to keep or how beautiful they are but darn it if kids don't love "Nemo". Gives us all a great chance to teach our kids to. Plus their symbiotic relationship with an anemone is an added bonus.

Fish are doing great (as long as they are fed... :p)- it's the corals that need help...lol. Well the maxima is happy as a clam and adding layers of shell. So that's my exception. Tinkering with location and the LEDs is probably the most difficult.

Lol - i will do my best. Then I will have to go to your thread and ask for the same...quid pro quo eh?

The anemone/clownfish relationship is specatcular. Unfortunately I don't have an anemone. I was concerned that my firefish or jawfish would stupidly dive in there for safety. So while I would love an anemone - my point (for any newbie lurkers) is that clowns can be happy and thrive without one.

I agree completely. I will even add for newbies ... they wander around like mad... you have to "try" to get them to settle in one place and then not annoy(messed that up) them or they move again. Of course mine settled into the back which is good (doesn't sting the other corals) and bad (cannot see all the interactions and general beauty of it).

I have to update my tank soon, I have taken pictures then not updated and the pics are outdated ..... OH well. I will do it soon.

quick update -

The female perc that has laid eggs twice - propelled itself out of the tank (no cover) on Friday. We heard her flapping on the floor. I put her back in and thought she was going to die. An hour later she was back by her "nest" and being guarded by the male.

Today she laid eggs again (third batch).

Scored a clam from uniquecorals:

But more importantly - I scored some free Rotifer samples thanks to MOFIB. Now to wait for the clowns to lay eggs again.

Looks great. I will have to get a pic of mine tmrw.
Please thank your wife for helping coral Ricky, he really got along great with both your daughters they are really sweet.

Don't even mention it. It was a nice change of pace for my wife. btw you have a pm.

I have that clams twin in my tank!

Sweet - you'll have to post a pic!

This is the 4th batch of eggs laid.

I did not notice any mating behavior yesterday - but I wasn't really watching. I did notice the female looked kinda big around the tummy area.

Anyways this time I am setting up two cultures of rotifers and will see if I can get any past the metamorph stage. Unfortunately I did not place a flat piece of tile for them so it looks like I'll be up late at night waiting for them to hatch.
