Folks, if you've recently upgraded or renewed your annual club membership but it's still not active, please reach out to the BOD or a moderator. The PayPal system has a slight bug which it doesn't allow it to activate the account on it's own.
I always take it as a sign of good stability when my clowns and orchid dottybacks are spawn with regularity. Good luck raising them it should be fun. I haven't tried it yet but realy do want to.
I don't think i have enough for this batch - so it may be a lost cause. I picked up some ammonia badges and have cleaned out the 10G that will serve as the larvae tank. The BBS hatching station is also getting set up - but I don't know if it's worth it if I don't have enough rots to get them past day 3.
I could order a few million Rots from Reed - but I'm not sure if I have the time.
I'm using jazzsam's old G series 250W equivalent LED set up he purchased from AqOb. I do not mess with the thing. I just keep it on the auto-settings. I've started hunting for spare parts as a "just in case".
I'm not 100% sure but I was wondering if the lighting (longer period during the summer) caused the clowns to react favorably to breeding. I know it's not my food because all I give them is cyclopeeze and some small pellets/granules I got free from TFP.
Tomorrow is likely going to be Clownfish fry day. The eggs are really silvery tonight and if I didn't know better they would hatch today - but it has only been 7 days at 80 degree temp. In the past they've been hatching around day 8 - which should be tomorrow night.
I expect very high losses - the batch looks like there could be 200~300 eggs. I won't know for sure until I scoop them out tomorrow night.
:'( Bad news - I was checking on the clutch this morning and the eyes were developing and they had the nice "silvery" look. Then when I came home this afternoon - the clutch was gone. I am really bummed. Either they were eaten by the parents or the hatched prematurely.
I guess the only positive news is now I can go about setting up the rotifer cultures properly.
After 3 months and assuming it was dead - i found my serpent star in my overflow. Who knew they could climb over? I also found my sea cucumber back there - that's the second time. I'm about to give up on this sea cucumber.
I finally got my tunze multicontroller set up - fun little thing. But after looking at herbiek's tank - i really think I should look more closely into getting some of the stream 2 pumps.
At the end of the day the fish are great, softies seem to be fine (hammer has grown significantly) and zoas seem to hold their own (though the PPEs have seen better days). I have had no success with the ORA red table planet or some of the other SPS sticks. I'm beginning to think the sump volume is not enough and will reconsider the plumbing for that set up.
Right now I have to go rake some leaves...lol.
EDIT - i should point out that since my b-day I picked up a CCB and promptly killed it by accident in my QT. I was able to replace that CCB with another and it died from lack of food (even though I saw it eat at the store). I am leaving this fish to the experts and not trying this again. :-X
Hey Phil sorry to hear about your fish's. Have you tried making a cover for the overflow? I'm thinking of doing this as well as closing the top of the tank with a net. I've had a few carpet surfers myself. Why do you think you need a bigger sump? OH, whats CCB.
i'm too lazy to make a cover for the overflow...who would think a cucumber and a serpent star would go in there!
Yes thanks nick - i lost two copperbands. They were beautiful and healthy and I will rename myself as "mr. death". I was sick to my stomach losing them. :-X
I put a piece of egg crate on top of my overflow, plastic gutter guard works good too. I used a few drops of ic gel to secure it this way you can always pop it off

Added last because we wanted to: Yellow Tail Damsel Chrysiptera parasema
Worst thing I've had to do this past year: constant battling of bryopsis...yuck.
Best thing: Setting up the rotifers and larvae tank in the hopes of breeding clowns
In conclusion - I just want to say while I feel relatively confident in my ability to keep fish alive (copperbands excluded) - I feel that my abilities with coral leave much much to be desired. So for the next year - I hope to be able to report better results in sps corals and my goal will be to have a free-baby clownfish to all members (with a good home) next year. Wish me luck.
Today is day 4. None dead this morning but the water quality is going foul fast. Did multiple water changes and will likely need to do another.
Supplies arrived from Brine Shrimp Direct yesterday:
ROtifer Sieve:
Decapsulated brineshrimp insulated:
BS Eggs and coldpack:
Ghetto hatchery. The "test" batch" worked fine. Tons of naupali/brine shrimp larvae in the growout/bath. The soda bottle contains another batch of Brine Shrimp eggs for hatching tomorrow. Those will be fed to the fry since they are decapsulated already. The grow-out is for the main display tank.
Horrible pic - but the fry are spooked with me leaning in:
I have not tried to rear any fry, yet, from either my O clowns or my ODs, but I really want to so I am paying close attention to your efforts. Good luck!
I did just loose one of my paired clowns though :-\
Ooops I miscounted. The 22nd was day 4.
Yesterday was day 5. Water conditions fine. I fed newly hatched brine shrimp. I find it ridiculous to try and get 7 shrimp per fish since I only hvae 5 fish total.
My biggest concern is the bigger clowns eat all the brine and die of over-eating.
1 newly hatched brine = 40 (FORTY!!!) rotifers in nutrional content. That's like a chicken nugget vs a triple stacked big mac or something.
I am re-starting another batch of brine shrimp - just in case the younger clowns can not eat the ones I put in already (since the shrimp are now on day 2).
Confusing I know....
Clowns are 6 days old
Brine Shrimp is 2 days old. As they get bigger the clowns will no longer be able to eat them, and grow less fatty and have more protein.
Speaking of which I've got like a thousand maybe more brineshrimp...day 2 /3 old shrimp. These had the cysts and I was just doing a test run to see if I could hatch them. It worked...but I never fed them. So they are growing up to become fish food for the adults.
Equipment breakdown:
AGA 120
Solaris LED lights
tunze 7096 on interval
tunze 6100x4
reeflo tarpon return pump/skimmer pump
MRC 1 skimmer with extension
PM Kalk reactor
tunze osmolator for ato
tunze nanowavebox
gfo phosban reactor
55 gallon saltwater/change reservoir
20 gallon ro reservoir
reefcrystals salt
airwaterice typhoon3
bag o carbon sitting in the sump (yes i should probably put this thru a reactor)
Things I'd like to change:
Light - i will probably change out the light once this one bites it. I guess I'll sell it as parts. I don't know if I will go LEDs again or try T5s.
Flow: I might tinker with the PH location and utilize a pulse mode rather than interval. Probably increase the flow into the sump. I was trying to save on electricity (and the need for another pump) by splitting the return with the skimmer.
Successes: Well the clowns laying eggs has been great. I finally see the end of the diatoms appearing on my sandbed (it only took a year... :-X). I wish I kept a better log because I'm not sure if that is because I set the pumps on interval mode (creating better flow) or with the newly formulated reef crystals. not sure.
Failures: I have lost every tridacnid clam attempted. One survived for 8 months and then died when I attempted to rid an encrusting worm on it.
Anyways - the clownfish fry still hold steady with 5 alive and they are now on day 17. They reside in a 5 gallon hex (thanks nikkit) and i've readied the 10gallon for the next batch that should hatch tomorrow night.
