Folks, if you've recently upgraded or renewed your annual club membership but it's still not active, please reach out to the BOD or a moderator. The PayPal system has a slight bug which it doesn't allow it to activate the account on it's own.
I would keep the smaller one as a back-up....Given the scope (and expense) of this project, keeping a second chiller (that you already have) hooked up makes sense to me especially if it runs via a second return line (the Dart).
Another option weould be to incorporate a battery back-up into the system through which the Dart and a chiller could be operated so that in case of a power failure at least the Dart (2nd return) and chiller would run for a while 'til the power comes back on.
I think I'll have to test the pumps run together in a manifold to come to a final decision.
I was going to sell the 1/4 hp chiller for lighting money 8)
I do like the idea of redundancy of a second chiller. It fits in with the redundancy of a second pump. The chiller(s) would be mounted on a shelf right at the ceiling and a housing put in place to draw hot vented air right to the exhaust fan. And, as I mentioned, my office can get HOT!!!!
One day, I hope to install an auto start backup generator, but that's a ways off for sure.
I may be supprised by the Cuda and find it gives me plenty of flow in the final configuration. I am sceptical it will. If the Cuda can handle the work load, I may plumb the Dart but not run it except as needed for repairs or maintenance of the Cuda. I have a great advantage, in that I will be able to set up the entire sump flow in mock up in my shop before final assembly in the wet room. So I'll actually be able to test the Cuda alone and the Cuda with the Dart before they go into service.
As for expense, I have been quite miserly in my equipment purchases. Everything I have so far has been purchased used from this Board or RC, you'd be really amazed at how relatively low my overall investment to date is. Besides heaters and bulbs, there are very few new items on my existing 120 or inthe pile'o stuff that will become the new wet room and 220. I am going to treat myself to new ballasts for the MH lighting over the 220, and that's extravegent for me.
Just found one of my anem clones wrapped in the shroud of my VorTech. That's the second of three clones to find the VorTech in the middle of the night. Just attracted to the flow I guess ???
I still have the parent and one clone and they are sitting in a good spot, hope the sit tight.
I have to run so I'll change carbon when I get back. The tank handled the last one pretty well, so hopefully this won;t be a tank wide issue :-\
Bax, where are you located. I'm ordering a pint of Weldon #3 this week. If you want I can add one on there for you. I think it's $7.50 for a pint. www.delviesplastics.com
Thanks. You know, I have absolutely no excuse for not having gone and picked up the Weld-On. My next to my office neighbor is a glass glazer and gave me a connection to his acrylic supplier. I just have to make the time to go there and pick up the acrylic sheets and glue. :
I need it to mod my sump and fuge for the upgrade too.
Waking in the door there are the Ca RX, Kalk Mixr, ATO reservoir & pump and QT, the CO2 cyl is in the stand of the QT the other one you see is a spare.
To the left is the fuge above with return sump below
Then there's the look to the skimmer sump & UV
The plumbing back & forth to the skimmer sump with the WC drain
Looking down at the chiller, it is tight back there!
So, one of the first corals I purchased way back in my 26 bow, was a frogspawn. Two heads and a GSP for $29.99. I got it home and spotted the brown jelly on one of the heads the second day and had to cut it away to a single head. It grew to 6-8 big heads in my 75 and is now dominating the front lower left of my 120g with 25 plus heads easily. The GSP is finally irradicated, grrrr!
I use the feed timer on the Tunze in the back left and feed in this corner, the froggy gets a lot of freebies this way.
Anyway, it is recently feeling the need for more growth space, and has begun to, very agressively, send out sweepers and has done some serious damage to my adjacent blue tippped stag and pavona corals.
Here are some sweepers in action
A direct hit!
The damage done to the stag!
and the pavona!
I hate to, but I guess I'll have to frag it and move some out of the display. I was hoping to let it grow and make a special spot for it in the 220 (in the works) but I don't think it is willing to wait that long! :
WOW! That is a super cool coral. Great pictures even if the frogspawn wasn't playing nice. I like your idea of keeping it together, tremendous success as a reef keeper.
I hate to keep harping on the aggressiveness of this frog spawn, I mean that is its character. But, I shot this vid last night. You can see a huge mass of streamers erupting, this is a much large (more aggressive) attack than usual. If you keep your eyes at about 1 ti 2 o'clock on the froggy, you'll see a streamer attache to the stag, much more into the stag than previously, and see just how aggressive an attack this is. The frog will separate this streamer so it may remain on the target and continue killing off the enemy. Hope the vid works! ??? ???
... Oh! ... And, I moved the frog to the fuge imediately after taking the video! :-\
