Jim, this is interesting stuff. I’ve always been told that these were spaghetti worms. Here’s a picture of one motoring across the glass of the sump about four years ago.

OrangeWorm-1.jpg

It’s now obvious that these are not spaghetti worms (terebellid polychaete), but are in fact hair worms (cirratulid polychaete).

The second thing in my tank that was mis-named…..Wellsophyllia are now Trachyphyllia, and Spaghetti is now Hair.

Good stuff!

I presume those spaghetti worms are 'good'. What eats them? or should I leave them alone ?

And Alex, spaghetti or hair, they are good....consider them part of your CUC.

Paul if you come quiet down my overflows I'll cover gas and a 12 pack of your choice :) and umm cheato!!!! oooooo lol I'm going nuts with the running water sound I think I may order the covers from glassholes that go over the top of the box (not the baffle that sits flat inside of it).

I received my care package from the BRS group buy. I’m not sure if I should be cursing out Arnie or thanking him for organizing this group buy. I bought more than I wanted to buy, after I saw a few things on sale!

DOSING PUMPS

Picked up two dosing pumps to automate throwing two-part into the tank. Now my wife and I can go away for a few days and not worry about the tank maintaining calc and alk.

RO MEMBRANE FLUSH KIT

I have a old RO unit that did not have a flush mechanism on it…..so now I have one! Not sure how frequently I’m suppose to flush the membrane…..today was the first time in three years. Also threw in two new carbon blocks and a sediment filter.

ATO FLOAT SWITCH

One of the float switches on my AquaHub ATO crapped out. Was going to buy a new switch from AquaHub, but shipping for the one item was more than the item. What is critical with the AquaHub is that the stud end is 8 mm….and the one at BRS was an exact fit.

I flush the membrane every time I use it. I run it for about 40 seconds. If you use a tds meter you can actually see the flush working as the tds drops.

??????

Bob, this flush valve bypasses the restrictor valve on the waste water line. When opened, water rapidly flows out the waste line, with no water coming out of the “clean” side. My tds monitor points are at the exit of the clean line and after the DI canister. So I really can’t read my tds while flushing. Also note that with any RO unit, when first turned on, will have “high” tds for the first cup or so of water produced.

Doesn't make sense? I am trying to imagine how the reading will change, but I guess it is possible being that all units are different!

I actually open my flush for 2 mins when I start up the unit. After that, I will flush it for another 2 minutes if it has been running for a long period of time.

I hate when this crap happens! Woke up this morning to find my teal milli with a couple of branches RTN’ed.

IMG_4996.jpg

With the beautiful weather today, I haven’t tested the water. However, I’ve prepared 30 gallons for a water change tomorrow (typically do 15 gallons/week).

I think I might have found the cause for the above “whiting” of the mille (and now part of my brain as well). I installed two BRS dosing pumps about a month and a half ago, and I noticed that the calcium portion is only down about 2/3 when compared to the alk. I did calibrate both pumps, so I’m suspecting the multi-timing function on the old ReefKeeper II is not functioning correctly. I’ve got to head out now, so I won’t be able to investigate until later today.

Ack! Hope you can figure it out Paul. Sounds like the dosers were not controlled properly.

Any chance the Milli could have been stung by a neighboring coral though?

George, I don’t think it’s coral wars (i.e. sweeper tentacles.) Here’s a picture of the brain with a chalice to the right and a knob coral just below.

IMG_5011.jpg

The chalice has been “pushing” the knob and will eventually win out. The chalice also recently made contact with the brain, and again, will probably win that battle too. But as far as I know, neither the chalice nor the knob put out stinger tentacles. And with the milli, there is nothing around that would be stinging it. I also checked on my RBTA to make sure it was in its normal position….still there.

I did do a 30 gallon water change yesterday and tested my Ca/Alk/Mg today and found 450 ppm/9.2 dKH/1400 ppm, respectively. I used the new Red Sea Pro test kit that Jim (downbeach) talked about in his comparison of Sailfert versus Red Sea. Even though both are the same titration type tests, I liked the added ergonomic design that went into the syringe delivery system and the storage case with the Red Sea….very nice.

I still have to figure out what’s going on with the differences with metering pumps…I’m still thinking ReefKeeper, since I had prior problems when setting multiple times with my lights….that Digital Aquatics never responded to my issue on their forum site.

On another note, I also picked up this very nice green coral for Kevin….thanks Kevin. I’m pretty sure, as Brian (ThermoSTS) pointed out, that it’s a Pavona Maldivensis.

Very nice pavona.

I think it was an alk spike from your dosing pumps. When my pumps were not calibrated in I would get some RTN from the Alk spiking up. If you did a %30 water change and your alk was still at 9.2 it could have been much higher which is why I think it was the alk. Also the fact that the dosing containers had that much less is kind of a dead give away.

If I remember correctly, senility rules!

I can’t remember what I had for breakfast, and someone asks me what my parameters were the last time I tested. I don’t know! Or should I say what so many say….they were “normal.”

So to combat my aging brain, I cracked out one of my old lab notebooks that was about as blank as my brain, and started writing down the things I do to the tank. This way I now have a record of my stupidity.

Now I just need to remember where I left the book!

So my wife was out doing her daily shopping. Did I mention that she shops every day! And she brings home these cute little fish clips to hold a towel to our chaise lounges….. that we have out at the pool. I never remembered the towels having a problem staying on the chaise lounges. I just roll my eyes and think to myself, “Where am I going to put these little pieces of crap in the shed?”

IMG_5166.jpg

As I mulled over the purchase of these clips and the waste of money they were, a thought flashes through my pea-brain. One of the concerns I have had, when doing a water change, is the siphon hose coming out of the buckets, and/or the filler tube jumping out of the sump. I’ve actually had the filler tube pop out of the sump and squirt water all over the floor. So I’m thinking I could use these clips to solve my problem. Here is a shot of the clips holding the Python siphon tube in a 5 gallon bucket, and the filler tube in the sump.

IMG_5168.jpg

They work like a charm. Now I only wonder what she will bring home tomorrow!

I think you just like them because they look like fish.

Hey Jim, my clips are styling….and well, your clips are …….dull. Not to mention that my wife doesn’t shop in Lowes.

Smaller towels that will fall off the chairs and then another pack of clips because you swiped these....

And here’s the kicker….as I mulled about these clips even further, I remembered that we have custom towels with pockets that fit over the back of the chairs. There is no need for these clips. So they will be staying in the fish room.

Paul, it's been a while since I checked this thread. In fact, I don't think I've read it since my last post.

I tend to agree with Mike that you had an Alk spike, but your "knob" coral looks pretty similar to my Hydnophora... which from my experience tends to be pretty aggressive. This isn't my pic, but a good example of what it looks like when they do attack other corals:

hydnophora_pilosa_attaching_acropora.jpg

Just keep an eye on it in the future. ;)

Anyway, hopefully this got all taken care of by now. Oh, and love the fish clips. I've used some like those Jim linked and had little success since they tend to pinch the hose. The kind you have look like the rounded grip part wouldn't cause that problem.

I should also adopt your log book idea. My memory isn't what it used to be either and I can't remember from one set of tests to the next. Plus, it might help to push me to be regular on the tests. Sometimes they get skipped due to lack of time or other stuff that always steals me away from my tank.

Lastly... Wow, awesome looking Pavona!
