Is this Cyanobacteria?

Anyone offer a guess if this is Cyanobacteria?
Weird thing about it is it changes color. Retains the texture of a sheet of slime which I think is consistent with cyano but being new to this didn't know if should change color. It's sand color in the AM and dark green after a day of sun/lights. Maybe a harmless algae. Fingers crossed.

It sure looks like it. Check for the usual suspects….phosphates for example…and continue with regular water changes. I actually lightly vacuumed (siphoned) out as much as possible when I had this little problem.

+1 to cyano, what paul said works. Keep ahead of it or it can get out of control.

Actually Dave, I have a brand new Chemiclean Red Slime Remover at my house, but I just don't have the scooper that comes with it. When I helped Mike Bodell clean out his house after the incident, he gave it to me.

If your cyano gets too out of hand, you can have it... but we just have to get a scooper for it to get the proper dosage. Maybe we can borrow one from someone who used it before?

If it's flappy, slimy, and blows off easy with a turkey baster it's cyano.. also cutting down on light times helps with some higher flow in that area

Sid, the problem with that is his tank is in the sunroom though. Will be hard to cut down on the natural sunlight that comes through all the windows.

new tanks always get cyano - it's not anything "wrong" with the tank.

It's ugly for sure - but once the tank matures you should be good to go.

I've used chemi clean twice a whole back with great results. I did half the rec dose the first time and it worked like a charm. They say to do 20 percent wc but I did about 40 percent. Tank suffered no losses at all. The second time I did it it worked just as well and I haven't had any in quite a while. Just make sure you turn the skimmer off and have a catch for all the wet stuff when it comes back on. It also tool out all the hair algae

Yep, lights always gonna be a challenge. Hope I can control it with removal and otherwise just use the good ok'd phos-ban and chaeto

it's a little tougher (temp control), algae growth - but it's not impossible. Dr. Mac runs all a lot of tanks in his greenhouse. Have you ever viewed his maxima clam tanks? clean no algae growth.

I know a lot of coral/ clam farms use sunlight clean of algae or they just keep on top of it as it's more easy to clean being in shallow trays/tubs but i find sunlight and reefers tanks in the same mix= algae

Yea, when Dave first started talking about his tank being in the sunroom I mentioned that algae could be a problem. Frankly, I'm surprised its not worse than it is or that it didn't happen sooner.

Well, that would be expected with a clam tank....or maybe that was your point.

Look for my post on Cyano, I may have had it the worst in the club! LOL, Not sure How I conquered it, but I literally was skimming so wet that I was replacing about 4 gallons a day on my 400+ system.

Chemiclean is real good stuff, but I move that I can manually before I ever dosed. Good luck with it.
