Jimroth's Big Ol' Tank

...as well as the SMIRNOFF bottle. I might have to steal the tray idea from you.

Yes, the vodka. It's a 1750ml bottle, and I dose 4.5ml per day, and yet the bottle only lasts a month....must be evaporation. I invented a drink called an "Alky Mary," it's vodka and kalkwasser. Cures heartburn too.

Where's the corals? ???

all I see are these stick things. ;D

Of course I'm just kidding, looks really great Jim! ;)

Non-stick items have been isolated to a well-lit quarantine zone behind the rockwork, beacuse the adult corals were complaining.. This includes my green rasta and still-recovering favia brain coral (c.2000). There is still a small glowing green favia and a "tiger stripe" chalice frag which are in the front cause they're purty.

Something else that occurs to me is that the tank looks dark because (a) The wine-red coraline and red brillo algae give a dark look, and (b) I have almost NO light coming from an angle which would light the front of the rockwork. It all comes straight down. Maybe I could either add some small lights in the front which are angled, or move the whole rack out by remounting the shelving racks on 2X4s mounted to the wall, like standoffs.
I don't think you can change the color of the coraline you get !

Corals look great the Pearlberry and A. Efllorescens in the second batch are my favorites so thanks for adding more pics. Copperband looks fat and happy ;D.

Pretty interesting and frustrating for us at times that you can have such different growth in corals. Even the same coral can go from fast to slow growth with really minor changes in the tank.

Knock-me-over-with-a-feather Department: That dang sea anemone showed up! Or rather, was hiding in plain sight. The thing managed to walk right into a rock covered with zoanthids, it's almost surrounded. It wasn't facing towards the front. I was looking at the rock and said, "That's one big zoanthid!" I had to look at for a few seconds to figure it out. I'll try to get a pic later, I moved the rock and everybody closed up. Is that bad for the sea anemone, being surrounded by zoos? Should I move it?

Its been about 1 year since I first saw Jims tank and well I saw it again today I gotta say he's doing it right the growth on some pieces are UNREAL....
And his fish need Jenny Craig (sorry Jim ;D) I've never seen a copperband b-fly with love handles till today....

I love Jim's fish selections!

Not just a CBB, Jim's got a yellow long nosed too!

It's a not just a reef, it's a fish tank!

Thanks guys!
I like the whole reef-safe-butterfly thing so there's probably a pyramid (or dare I say a Tinkeri?) in my future. Charles Delbeek wrote an article on some other candidates a while back. No more brown Heniochus, though, that was toooo painful!

Here Endeth the Tale

This thread has been going on for nearly two years and it's time to bring it to a close. Tales shouldn't go on forever, should they? Look at The Guiding Light, it went on 40 years, because that's what soap operas do. It's a bore.

My Big Ol' Tank is doing great right now, coral colors are better then ever, chemistry is good, fish are fine, and I even got my fixed return pump back from Reeflo.

I want to thank everybody who posted their kind remarks and insightful comments.

If I feel the need to share news of any aspects of my tank in future, I will do it in the respective forums (Corals -- Fish -- Equipment) either here or on some other website. This thread will be allowed to slide slowly down the page and into the La Brea Tar Pits of memory.

If you would like to read more about how things end, check out the following books from the bookstore or your local library:

The Road, by Cormac McCarthy

World Made by Hand, by James Howard Kunstler

Book of the Long Sun, by Gene Wolfe

and for just a terrific read,

The Deptford Trilogy, by Roberston Davies

Thanks, and Happy Reefing!

I respectfully refuse your resignation!

Take a break if you need it, but this is one of my favorite threads.

Sort this forum by number of views and see if you can guess my other favorites. ;)

Jeff: Some of us polar bears never got onto the iceberg in the first place.
Bill, Jim T, It's great that you three guys, and Bax, read my thread. Hey I know, maybe I'll just email you with updates.

Actually I'm thinking about setting up my own website, where I can put stuff about my tank, my life as a millionaire jet-setter, my observations about pop culture phenomena and stuff like my Uncle Junie's recipe for Broiled Tridacna Clam. And samples from his collection of 10,000 jokes, mostly off-color.

I'll see you guys around. Not quitting the club. My mom taught me that if I didn't have anything nice to say I shouldn't say anything, so I will leave it at that. My email addy is my user name at optonline dot net.

As with system management choices, you gotta do what works for you. When you get a web site up shoot us a link. And stop by for a frag and beer anytime ;D

Jim, please add me to that email list with your updates. About anything. Whether it's your tank or pop culture. :)
