Jimroth's Big Ol' Tank

Jim

Maybe add another layer of egg crate to protect those that are getting shocked by the swap. It is odd how the same strain of coral can respond differntly in different tanks. My tricolors when thru the roof both color and growth wise when I up graded to 400s from 175s. But, I also lost my rose millie almost immediately along with one or two other corals.

I'm looking forward to that angel!

No going back now, I think the damage that's done is done at this point. I'm just waiting for stuff to adapt and also looking for some time to head to Avenel to pick up my new bulbs. I have moved a couple of the victims (tricolors) lower in the tank to recover.

Jimroth's Cyphastrea

This is such cool stuff. I bought it from Unique Corals at MACNA along with a piece of M. undata.
I'm not sure if this is "Meteor Shower" or "Superman" but at least it's colorful:

You can kind of make out the original rectangular frag in the middle. The stuff just spreads right off of it like star polyps, I don't think it has to form any skeleton right away.

I would like to pick up some other colors, if anyone has a different morph let me know and we can swap.

Looking good Jim. I can't believe your meteor shower grew that much since MACNA.

Corals are starting to adapt to the new lighting, getting return of colors. I switched to the Reeflux 12K's recommended by several club members and they are great. Lots of blue, lots of PAR. One thing I have realized is that in my low nutrient tank my corals may be starving. I started to get tissue recession just in shaded areas on several corals. I have started to FEED the corals, something I haven't done in a long time, I'm adding Reef Nutrition Oyster Feast. At $20 for a little bottle, it costs like Johnnie Walker Blue, but you can see a change in the corals after only a few sessions. They have taken on a bright green color or cast, very impressive. I am hoping also it speeds their adaptaion to the 400W lights. I've been dosing around 1tbs./day for the nominal 250G system. There are about 6 doses in the bottle.

Good news / bad news:

Bad News part: My yellow Halichoeres wrasse went couch surfing, literally flew 4' from the tank to our new sofa. Did not look bad when I found him but did not come back to life in the tank. I have to get some netting or someting over the tank before I get any new wrasses. My one-eyed femal square anthias got popeye in her remaining eye and that did her in. At least I won't have an eyeless fish swimming around the tank.

Good News part: My new 20g Q-Tank IN the house is set up and cyling, so I can get my new majestic angel and put it in quarantine as soon as I get back from Texas. And a new yellow wrasse. Plus, once the tank is covered, one of those Solorensis wrasses, or maybe a Scotts...

I have the reeflux 10k in 400 w. Are the 12k still pretty bright? I had them in 250 w but were so much dimmer than the 10k in 250w

They are bright, all the way to the bottom of the tank. I had tried a bluer (15K XM) 250W bulb and my livestock had a very negative reaction, although initially colors looked good.

Jim, that's actually not an undata. I think it is cyphastrea. Nice looking piece.

Just take one more look at the post, it's titled cyphastrea, I said I bought some undata at the same time.

I am hot on the Cyphastrea thing. If they weren't $99 on DD I would become the NJ Cyphastrea PIMP. Ackshully, they have Emerald City (green/blue) for $49, that might be my next purchase.

Sorry for my mistake, I don't look at those (they're not obvious when you're scrolling through a thread).

You're having great growth with yours! Much continued success with your colonies.

Yeah i tried the xm 15k in a de 150w, it was terrble. Very dark bulb. Their 20k and the reeflux 20 k look great, Dont know about long term though. I know 2 people that went from 10k to 20k. One of them loves it and corals are still doing great, the other said after a few weeks he had to go back to 10k cause the corals started to look worse and worse. I didnt see but he said everything browned up and polyps stopped comin out.

This is why i was thinkin the 12k

All this about the new 400w 12k bulbs and no pics!

Yeah, I'm reluctnnt cause I'm still stalling on my personal website...
The colors are looking better every day, so I suppose when I get back from this trip I will take some pix. Mine only look good from the top down, my front of the tank pix look awful.

Thats funny cause its the same here. Ill take pics from the front and the colors just dont transfer to the camera. The colors look great in person. But when i mess wit the tank it looks awesome from above.

Re: Jimroth's Big Ol' Tank Pix

Yeah, I said I wouldn't post anymore pix, but life is what happens when you're making other plans...

I have finally had some recovery and further improvement in coral color. I attribute this 2 either (1) 400W light upgrade (2) 12K Reeflux Bulbs or (3) Feeding my corals. It's probably a combination.

None of these pix looks as good as the corals do in person. Someday I need to read up on how to do this, take a class, shoot raw, blah blah blah etc.

I can only get hints of the colors to show up, and the 400s have made it harder. No matter, excelsior!

This tricolor turned brown from light shock, now is well on its way to regaining it's old oomph. It's an unnamed tricolor OG II seems to have often, quite tough to kill:

The branchy bunch in the center grew from a meeting prize purple plana frag I got a while back Might have come from Phil's tank. Got it in the right light and it took  off (pre 400s). To the right, idaho Grape vs Green Cap.

Re: Jimroth's Big Ol' Tank More Pix

Pearlberry looking more blue and less brown. Pic doesn't do it justice. I am having to restrain the pokerstar monti underneath, which will kill the acro if it can. To the left you can see the weird sunburn effects on my montipora spongodes.

Feb2010ReefShots024.jpg

Blue polyp monti in the back. Turns out, you need 400s to get the blue.

Re: Jimroth's Big Ol' Tank Even More Pix

Pink and Purple millie, finally living up to its name. I had to break off this colony which was attacking successfully my purple nana colony. It turned all brown and is now recovering its purple.

Feb2010ReefShots053.jpg

I broke off a little frag of upscales microclados so I glued it down It spread out very nicely and it's coloring up as you can see. Soon to be a colony:

Re: Jimroth's Big Ol' Tank Pix, Just a Few More

Have to get all the signifcant pix in here, for some reason...

I came pretty close to killing this aquacultured Acropora Abrotanoides. It was bleached on one side, starting to lose some tissue on the base. I moved it back up to the top, and it really loves the 400s. Maybe now it will develop some of the other colors it's supposed to have, instead of Gulden's Mustard...

Feb2010ReefShots047.jpg

Edge-on shot of my Efflo. I am hoping it will grow more of the vertical branches under the new light.

Feb2010ReefShots020.jpg

This A. Nana had turned solid tan, because my millie was attacking it. The entire coral went brown, not just on the side with the millie. I moved the offending coral (see earlier photo) and the purple is coming back pretty well. Started almost immediately. Funny things those corals.

The 12K bulbs give a nice glow to the Ponape Birdsnest

That's it, I'll have more if some of the colors improve more. Maybe my blue millie will turn blue, or that Sunset Millie will photoshop itself into the color I saw on the web, one can only hope.
