Kids got the itch back...

im going to steal the small ac from my FW tank upstairs until i can get another one. I found new carbon still in a box from fluval. I think ill rinse the sponge and put the new carbon in and see what happens....thoughts?

Definitely run it. It will help speed the process Of clearing up the water. As Kevin mentioned keep a eye on the filter pad cause it will get clogged pretty fast. It will still take a day still to totally clear up.

I guess the lights over the tank will create a lid effect by itself. Also should i always run the AC? I honestly was just going to rely on the live rock and 20 lbs of live sand to take care of that.

I have a 10 galln set up in my bedroom Just inverts and corals so minimal feeding. I run an ac 70 with the sponge and a small bag of carbon and gfo. I'm not a stickler with maintenance on it and its been doing great. I change the sponge once a month along with the carbon and gfo. I'd keep the filter running all the time especially if your gonna have fish. At some point I'm going to put some cool nano fish in mine but right now I love having to do so little to it. My 75 keeps me busy.

I'd keep it open. Heat is the bigest challenge you have on these small tanks.

I can't hurt to run the AC in their will help with the gas exchange and a place to run carbon or poly filter when needed. But with the powerhead I think you will be fine. That just my opinion. I'm not real experienced with nano tanks so if I'm wrong please someone chime in. I don't want to steer NJ strong the wrong way.

Thanks Tommy. The AC 50 on my 10g is good for now. once it clears i think ill add the carbon i have. whwn u say gfo do u mean like phosban?

No i appreciate your insight Jose. I think im gunna top off with more salt bc starting the filter took some and ill let it run with the sponge. i just squeezed out the sponge maybe a half hour ago...not crazy dirty but the tank is getting there. ive gotta get a hydrometer...ive had a refractomter and its more trouble than its worth IMO. Powerhead is still running and once it clears ill throw the heater in. Everyone has been so stellar and made me more excited about this tank. Keep those replies coming!

I just mix a couple of table spoons of carbon with the gfo (granular ferric oxide). Gfo does the same thing a phosban. I buy that in bulk from brs.

Would the regular carbon bag work? and im assuming i can get phosban in some kind of bag as well. As I type this the tank is looking good. When I add the cycle should I turn the filter off?

Yea I saw Fluval also makes a phos. remover so I may have to run the ac 70 to have enough room lol. Should I feed the tank just regular fish flakes or just maybe add a few snails?

If your using biospira or somthing similar you will still need some kind of ammonia source. Fish food will do the job but the quickest way is to use pure ammonia. That way you know exactly how much you have put in and can accurately test during the cycle process. You could also just throw a deli shrimp in the tank to rot.

The stuff I have is called one and done i think. Okay i never knew that about the shrimp! What did u add for the ammonia? I have to get that api test kit. cant do eveerything in one day. Adding a fish would prob be too early I guess.

my correction its called one and only by dr. tims and it says about removing nitrites and ammonia. So afteradding this whats the next step?
