im not exactly sure on your setup but what i did was use a rubber furnco removed metal clamps to slip onto the other end of pipe into sump to add an extension piece of pvc a( bubbler per say) so its under the surface of the water and i put a lint trap cone for washer machine slop sink style in the top upside down inside over flow box sound has traumatically droped

I made the hole in the cap slightly larger and it no longer gurgles and surges!!!
It now whistles like an incoming freight train!!!
...my dog is staring at it and howling in admiration.

Yes buy one of these and change your hobby from fish to train
Try cutting back return pump with ball valve.
I personally never had a problem .My old system was ran like that for 10 years in which I only switched pumps to run more reactors .

Guys more great news!!!
I stuck an airline tube into the hole at the top and it no longer whistles. It is quiet, but now I get wave like surges going into the sump.
My wife is enjoying it as she says it reminds her of waves crashing on a beach....
.....I'm not enjoying it.
So from all this, one can deduce that the hole needs to be bigger to avoid the "waves" yet needs to be silenced with an air hose.
Option 1: proceed with the following
Valve to tone down my pump output and hopefully get rid of the wave effect.
Option 2: drill out a larger hole in the durso cap to accept a 3/8 air hose instead of 1/4 and put a valve on that to control the air input and output and leave the return pump flow as is.

I've had no luck with option 2 I've had to remake durso and lower pump flow but people..do have success with both.
Alright so I have found a perfect way of quieting a durso pipe while looking infinitely stylish and clean.
Gentlemen, I present for your delectation:

Chapter 9: it's cyclin' time!
Ok so we are ready to create life in the tank. For this purpose I procured some liverock rubble from my LFS and a sacrificial shrimp pictured here:
I sat there chanting dark chants to appease the reef gods before offering a sacrifice.
After that, the sacrificial shrimp was placed in a special sacrificial enclosure:
And then placed in the sacrificial chamber:
Let us pray gentlemen for good ammonia and for quick nitrates. Let us appease the reef gods so that the tank my cycle quick and there shall be no hiccups. Let us be humble in our quest and let us be brave.
