Max's Shallow Reef: An epic adventure of corals, fine beer, nonsense, and general insanity.

Update: I am back to three damsels.

...not due to evil magic but due to buying a talbots damsel from lfs.

Also got a few corals and a coral banded shrimp with one claw....

...well he had 2 when i got him but he had an altercation with my mp10 powerhead.

... I now have foam on it

... We both learned a lesson

Update:

I have quite a bit of corals in there. Soon will be gluing these to their permanent spots.

So far everything is going well gentlemen.

I actually look at the tank with hope and admiration rather than despair and wrath like the last one.

Shallow tanks are soooo easy to work on

I will forbid my children and their children's children to do any other tanks than shallow.

...unless they are six feet tall

...and famous basketball players

...in which case I will profit, so they can do whatever tank they like

Chapter 11: I think it's 11 but whose counting..

Gentlemen let us speak of flow.

Currently I have two sources: the overflow return nuzzle on one side and mp10 on the other.

The left side of the tank doesn't get nearly the same amount of flow. If I turn up the mp10 the right side gets blasted too much. If I turn up the return flow then I have general turbulence on the surface which then I can't see stuff from top down. And I want to see stuff top down.

Tried adding a little powerhead on the left but Im trying to keep amount of crap I have running somewhat down.

Can I get away with gentler currents by turning everything down or do I need to invest in a coral viewer like they have in stores floating in their tanks?

Always tricky to achieve a good flow pattern for a shallow tank. In my 80 breeder which is 17” tall I run one mp40 at about 50%. On the remote side the flow is weak. But I put low flow corals there. Have you tried two mp10 on the back wall? Maybe try one and see how the flow bounces off the front. Then you can decide whether to buy another one.

Perhaps I will do what you did and put low flow stuff there. Is the surface of your water turbulent?

if flow is your issue, just smash a hole into one of your side glass panels...lol :loyal:
