Mynd's Aquapod - 01.07.07

Well, thanks to something sweet I was fortunate enough to locate a green banded goby in my area. He does not have a name yet as I am sure my fiance will let me know what that is. :) I will enjoy him as I hope you will the photo. I acclimate him in the bag in the tank for 1 hour pouring a 1/5 of a cup of my tank water into the bag every 15 minutes.

I am off to get some food.

So, wait...

You've spent all this time making sure everything is as perfect as possible, and you didn't QT that little guy for at least a few days..?

??? ???

There is nothing in the tank to quarantine him from. If there was any livestock at all in the tank I would have, but since there is nothing in there but rocks and snails and he is no bigger then my pinky fingertip. I just did not think it was necessary. None of the water he came in was added to the tank either. I think he will be fine.

One of the biggest reasons to QT a fish before putting it in your tank is to reduce the chance of spreading infections to the tank itself.

For example, say this fish had ich. You put him in your tank, the parasite lays the eggs, and they drop off into the rocks, the sand, etc. Now you have a tank that needs to go ferile for 8 weeks before you can put any other fish in.

I'm not saying you're 100% sure to have problems, but it just surprises me that you didn't take the precautionary steps, based on your previous history of trying to do everything the right way.

Either way, good luck! Looks like a cool fish!

you are right.. I guess I considered it to be the quarantine tank and I should not have taken that chance.. God willing everything will be alright.. Thanks for the input. Next time I will be sure to do a quarantine.. :)

I learned the hard way, as I think many do. I lost almost all my fish to a nasty ich breakout, it really sucked, and i ended up having to set up an entirely new tank to wait out the old one.

Of course, then i broke down and sold all the parts of the old tank, sooo...I guess in the end it turned out well...quite a process, though!

Well, you know how it is.. If you get one with the lights off, you need to get one with the lights on. Just a reference photo here. Nothing to see. Move along :)

Hi Mynd..Nice fish and photo..Can I ask where you bought it and if you noticed whether there were any more?? I've been looking for one for a while now.

Thanks,
Dom

I received this fish from Aquatic-Obsessions ( great place, clean, Owner is nice, someone you can trust getting your fish from ) When I left there was one more, but since I was contacted by so many people regarding this fish I cannot say for sure if that one is still there. I would call ( Will ) first and ask.

I should have taken the other one while I was there. I did not realize how tiny these were going to be. I don't think having 2 in a reef tank is a big problem at all. Figuring out what they eat.. Well that is another issue all together. :)

had another idea besides the ones I told you about... cyclopeez. I've never had a fish turn it down (I use freeze dried myself) and it was what I used to get my very small yellow clown goby eating after getting him. Might work with your little guy/girl too.

Thanks mynd..I know Will quite well and am in the shop about every other day. Am surprised I didn't see them.

As for feeding, cyclopeze is a good choice (I use frozen) as are rotifers, either the frozen type by Hikari or the bottled one by Reef Nutrition. In the case of the cyclopeze and Hikari rotifers, care must be taken not to overfeed especially in a nano tank.

Good information people.. thanks.. Just want to update you as to the progress of my tank.. It is going well. However, with the introduction of the fish and the 10 day water changes ( not that it should make a difference ) I am starting to see a little "THREAD ALGAE" Now this is usually a case of high iron in the water, but I can assure you I don't have any.

I am going to do a nice 3Gallon water change tomorrow and stop usage on my 2 part for now. I am thinking there might be some iron in the 2 part that might be feeding this tiny outbreak.

I do in fact believe it to be the nitrates that are being generated and absorbed in the tank from the snail poop.

I might actually start doing a weekly water change as I think 10 days IS the LIMIT on a nano and I am reaching that limit each time.

In addition I would also like to show you a couple FRAGS I acquired. :)

There is one more, but based on these my camera just can't handle taking pictures well of frags deep inside the tank. Sorry bout that.. Enjoy..

Well, it has been awhile and I have had some ups and downs. The goby is doing really well.. He is now actually eating pellets ( 2 ) every 3 days. That is my feeding schedule and she can eat whatever she can find in the tank otherwise. :) I continue to get a small diatom on my sand every couple days. It is just a light coating but it still bothers me. I think I am going to remove all the sand from the tank and make my life of cleaning up snail crap that much easier. Not sure why this is occurring but I want it to stop.

One of my frags fell out of my hand while I was cleaning off some plant life connected to it. It just happen to fall into a hole in a rock and I basically had to crush it in order to get it out. Two days later and only 2 out of like 10 polyps have opened. I think I did some damage. We shall see.

On the flip side I did get another CUC member. Eating nicely in the tank. Acclimated over the course of 1 hour slowly. However, he craps alot too. Another reason to get rid of the sand. This means that huggybear ( fiance is naming them ) has to go, as he will have no place to stay. I might even take back one Astrea. Too much crap make mynd a dull boy.

I believe his name is Gimpy and he is tiny.

Other then that the tank is awesome.. Love it.. Just want to get it stable and leave it alone. :)

Mynd,

You think the diatoms are just because your tank is so new, and will keep on for a little while anyhow, so you should just let them roll until they are done?

Seems like you're worrying too much about something that, in essence, is just life developing as it normally should in your tank.

Is that little fellow an emerald? Mine shows itself about once every week or two. Don't know where that little guy hides.

:)

Glad to get an update from you. My sand seems to be getting dirty but im sure theres not much to do to fix it. Like the new addition to the cuc also.
