Mynd's Aquapod - 01.07.07

Hello and welcome along and thanks for the kind words. I love those.

The nano crew and myself are happy to have another person on board. We are basically at the sit and wait stage of the nano. Rock and water are in with a CUC and some itsbitsy frags. Otherwise we kinda just stare at one another waiting for the next FTS to appear on the forums some place.

I am still waiting on a FTS from Subliminal, Twan and CONSTANTNE :D By the way how are you guys doing? Have not heard from ya's in awhile. Don't forget to write :)

Be sure to post a new thread on what you are doing and your progress, unless of course you already have an established tank. The definitely show it off in the nano forum. Would love to see it!

Glad to get an update from you. My sand seems to be getting dirty but im sure theres not much to do to fix it. Like the new addition to the cuc also.

You too huh? Damn.. I guess we have about 6 weeks to go. I am going to be doing my 4 gallon water change this weekend. That emerald is making the tank super clean on the rocks including the little valonia I have ( all gone now ) I want to keep the sand, but I think I am going to remove it all this weekend. I just did a test of my nitrates and they seem to be 5 on my nutrafin test kit ( which I like ) and 12.5 on a 7 year old tetra test kit that I had laying around. Only place I am getting any brown algae is on my sand. Looks ugly!

If you can get a picture of yours let me see it.. Just want to match it up.. Seems like your tank and mine are about the same age. Coralline in my tank is growing like mad. Even at the bottom.

Just throwing this up for progress viewing on my part. Date:09.07.07

Even Mr. Goby came out for the pictures. Bottom left near the mushroom. :D

Mynd,

In the photography section, I posted a thread entitled 'progress', which has about 30 fts's in a row from the time i set up my tank until a few days ago. It's really like a progression of algae. ;)

A tank thread for my 'cube? Why not.

I'll get it started and I'll let you guys decide if its worthy of "nano-crew" membership. :)

I'm still here watching ya mynd :p
Looking good, dont worry about the diatoms they will come and go at your stage.
Hows that chiller working out?

As for me I did update a new FTS in my original thread, enjoy.

Hello there guys.. :D

You know what twan?? I could not be happier that I put the cl-150 chiller on this tank. Not having to worry about the temperature at all makes the hobby so much nicer. Best investment to date. I got it for a really great price over at ChampionLighting. For anyone that is interested please contact Gary ( nice guy ) and he will set you up. It is not listed on the site, but he can get it to you cheaper then anyone.

My first time viewing this thread. That rockwork is incredible. Nice job!

You know what twan?? I could not be happier that I put the cl-150 chiller on this tank.

I saw a used one (4 months) that was reduced to $150 but some1 else snagged it before me.
Wasn't there a gripe you had with it though. Was it that the actual unit generated heat or something like that? Lemme know.

Hello there,

The chiller was just fine.. It was finding a pump that could provide the proper amount of flow for the duration in and out of the tank. The Blue Line HD-20 does not have a fan built in, so the pump gets very hot if you do not have a fan blowing on it. Thus, it puts even more heat into the water. Adding a small fan for 6.00 that blows on the pump as seen in the photos cools off the pump down to a luke warm. Much Much less heat is added to the water.. The chiller goes on for about 15 minutes every 4-6 hours to bring the temperature down to a cool 77.

I have heard many opinions on if the pump should get that hot. Others here say, wow I did not realize it was so hot until you said something. Even wetwebmedia says that is the way they run. Then I get an email from the company and they say. No, it should not be that hot, return repair or replace. So who do you believe? Right now it is working perfectly and like stated above the fan keeps it tons cooler all the time.

I picked up 3 fans, just to have some extra since I did not know how long a fan would last at six dollars. So I have two more. Also, shown in the photos. They say to clean them out every 3 months from calcium building up so I have to look into what to run through it. I figure I will put whatever it is in a 5 gallon bucket of water and make a loop through the chiller for 15 - 20 minutes. Should clean it out nicely. Just something to keep in mind when purchasing a chiller of this type. You need to maintain it too. :)

I'm not too familiar with chillers, as my tank stays at about 78 degrees without one (thank God!), but could you run the pump after the chiller and turn the temp down a bit on the chiller, so that the cold water cools the pump?

The chiller is not like a heater in that sense.. If you turn down the chiller it will stay on till the entire tank reaches that temperature, heat from pump or not. You don't really want to go lower then 77 on a chiller as that is the optimal temperature of your tank. ( not everyone will agree, since corals from the indio pacific range up to like 85 ) but I like it at 77. I believe that higher temperatures mixed with lighting will cause more severe algae growth. Keeping the temperature lower I firmly believe everything is happier.

Pulling the water out of the tank and pushing it through the chiller just seemed to be optimal moreover then pulling the water out of the tank and through then chiller and then forcing it up into the tank. Making a pump pull that much water ( 240GPH )I think might cause the pump to heat up more then pushing it.

Hello there,

Have not given an update yet, so I figured what the hell. I know how much you people love to see my tank of rocks. :) All in good time though. Only thing I want to provide today is a look into what a certain type of supposed nuisance algae looks like and according to wetwebmedia both of them should be removed.

This is an unknown nuisance algae ( the really dark stuff ) and its friend Lobophora variegata which is the cap looking thing to the right at the top.

The rest are just photos of my tank including some new Full Tank Shots where I need to move the hydor 1 I added to the tank a little lower and out of sight. Right now the tank is circulating at 860GPH. Honestly, I think I hit the magic number.

Enjoy

I hope you all enjoy the photos as I know they are not the best.. However, they are the best I am able to do with my camera. Have a nice day.. :D

I really don't agree on the magic number theory. It looks like that koralia has blown away all of your substrate! ::)

I also disagree about the pictures, quite nice shots Mynd!! Looking very good.

So, Are you happy with your bare bottom? (Tank that is).

Next time I want to go with fiji pink for sure and just enough to cover the bottom. No more.

Id like to see a small vid clip if your camera can. I gotta see that flow.

Yeah,

I had to get rid of the substrate as it was just accumulating crap. I am going to replace it in a little bit with arag-alive if I get the itch. Hopefully this way the sand will take care of the nitrates better than dead sand.

I have a new addition to the tank today thanks to CONSTANTNE. I traded him a couple snails for a rather nice mushroom. Hopefully it will make it. :) Here it is only a few hours after I received it.

The Goby is eating well. My nitrates are about 5 and just won't drop any further. Just going to have to water change this one out for awhile as I feel there is still some die-off in my tank contributing.

I will turn the cam on so you can see the flow for yourself there twan. It is really moving nicely. However, I am unsure at this time if the mushroom on the left likes it. He basically is not opening as full as he was. However, if he jump the rock he is on I will be very pleased. :D
