Hey guys... I wanted to give a quick update and ask a question... I've been running for a couple of weeks... and everything is going great... my salt is back to 1.025... I have calibrated my Refractor with a solution I bought online and I purchased a hydrometer for a backup/confirmation. I have a pair of clowns (M/F) 3 Blue/Green Chromis a Lawnmower Blennie, a cleanup crew, a peppermint shrimp and an emerald crab...all are doing well... eating and looking good... Stats - 79 deg, ph 8.2-3, ammonia 0, Nitrites 0, Nitrates almost 0 (hint of color), phosphates almost 0 (hint of color), Calcium (I need to test) last test was low 380ish but so was my salinity 1.015ish... I am running carbon and gfo in reactors, a sock that gets cleaned weekly as well as a physical filter and those pads get replaced weekly... an oversized PS and my lights are on from 11:30am to 7:30 pm and the moon leds come on from 730pm to 12 midnight.
My question is concerning frags... the three I originally purchased have all died... now I contribute that to the salinity issue I had... but since my levels have stabilized I've purchased two more frags... I purposely went with supposedly easy to care for corals with a Duncan and a Zoanthid ... and I temp acclimated them for at least a half hour... put them in and both had closed polyps... and have not opened in a couple of days now... I am guessing something is wrong with my water that I'm not thinking about...
I plan to take my water to Trop to have it fully tested... any ideas?
Also... I have a long tip anemone I might be giving away if anyone wants it... I didn't realize they need a DSP and I only have an inch... right now I have a corner of my tank propped up with sand and I placed him in there... he has 80% of his stem in the sand and hasn't moved but if he does move and is not happy I will have to give him away...
Anemone Update - Hey guys what do you think about this idea... I put a 4 inch acrylic container in my tank, cut out the bottom and put the anemone in this new 4 inch bed while maintaining a 1 inch bed in the rest of my display. If he decides to move for light or flow then I relocate the acrylic container to his new spot of choice. Probably wont look great but if I get to keep this little guy I'll take the aesthetic hit...
Getting worse... I have no idea what is wrong... I can't go to trop until tomorrow... All my new Siefert Test are posted above... I'm doing another 20 gallon water change hopefully later tonight...
Anyone understand why this is happening... the fish and inverts are doing fine... It's just frags and now the anemone.
I make my own water... I use Red Sea Coral Pro... they came from saltwaterfish.com ... I didn't check the water in the bag... I was told to just temp acclimate by floating then take them out of the bag after a half hour
I would check your alk, with Gfo and carbon and little coral life or that which likes water with more nutrients...you may be too clean. No copper ever used in tank? No rusty magnets?
I will go to the store tomorrow as soon as they open.. I've been doing weekly / sometimes twice a week water changes about 10 gallons each time to get the salinity to 1.025 .
I read two things i wanted to ask about.... 1st is along the lines of what I think you were saying which is if i have carbon, gfo and an Reef Octopus 110 i might be skimming the good nutrients out of the water...
2nd. I see there is a Copper test kit and some filtration media if my test is positive that i can run in a reactor.
Should I attempt to deal with number 1 and turn off the reactors for the carbon and gfo and shut down the skimmer?
I will def get the copper test tomorrow and report back.
Okay shut down pumps for both reactors... I will still have my water tested tomorrow at the lfs and if they don't also test for copper I will buy a kit and test myself.
So basically the only thing doing well in my tank are the fish, my emerald crab, all my hermit crabs and I'm not sure about my peppermint shrimp because he usually hides in my rocks for a couple of days at a time and I'll catch a glimpse of him every couple of days...
Another thing it might be is just pure shipping stress, it has been very cold in the last few days. Did the box have heat pads in it when you received it, were they still warm?
