Do not give her ideas like that or I will be in debt to her darn jar. She's already threatening me with one of those lol. I work construction, I can't help it :p

My lights are done my lights are done! I couldn't be happier with how they turned out! So thankful for the time and effort my boyfriend put into them! The rocks look amazing with the different LEDs can't imagine how good the corals are going to look! Were getting there! Were doing everything right, and that takes time!! uploadfromtaptalk1379958446768.jpguploadfromtaptalk1379958454460.jpguploadfromtaptalk1379958464087.jpguploadfromtaptalk1379958472308.jpg

Thats so pretty ! I still dont really understand the full spectrum /blue white differentiations just yet ( well rather, I dont think I deserve them because I should learn how to use the lights before jumping into the big ones lol ) but I bet your corals are gonna look great ! When are your clownfish going in? I havent seen you in school I hope everythings all better now !

Thanks jing, it took me a while to fully understand as well! And I haven't been in school. I will be there tomorrow! Thank you for your concern. And my clowns will be going in this weekend :) woo hoooo.

Well everyone, today is September 26th and my nitrites are finally at zero so there is officially live life in my tank!!! I have a huge Duncan, he's being a little shy but is starting to open up my beautifully and I have a beautiful war coral as well! I am one happy girl and can't wait to get my clowns this weekend!!

Yay. Congrats to the first additions.

both need to be nursed a little bit, starting off as a hospital tank so far lol. Buddy of mine decided to redo his tank and didnt have water for a water change. he also has a lot of dead spots. so the entire tank was full of detritus. rescued both of these before he could kill them -.-

Thanks guys I'm very happy about them! Even though they need a little nursing (which I don't notice) Their so beautiful to me and special because their my first corals in this tank!

Congratulations Clownchick.....ready for fish and corals. WooHoo!

I know I'll get beat up on this, but nitrites are really of no significants with saltwater tanks. The level never gets to a point that impacts living animals in saltwater tanks (with very few exceptions.) What is most critical in looking at a cycle in a saltwater tank is the absents of ammonia, and the presence of nitrate. Once you see this, you're good to go.

I am amused by your "live life" comment as well. I'm assuming this is in comparison to dead life, which wouldn't be too good. :p

Please don't take me too seriously....I'm harmless.

Again, good to see another tank ready for some fish and coral.

Hey Paul,

After being in the fishless cycle for about a week and a half, the cycle stalled out on nitrites. ammonia spiked to 4.0 for a few days, and gradually went down as nitrite increased, and nitrite spiked to about 3.0 i believe, and then started to sink. Nitrates rose, and the ammonia stayed at a constant 0.0 for this period after the initial week. Nitrites never dropped below 1.0 however, and even though the nitrates continued to rise and then decrease slightly, the nitrite stayed the same. I did some research into the matter since this is the first time i am starting a tank from completely ground zero scratch, meaning non-live sand, dry rock (BRS Pukani) and completely fresh RO/DI water and salt.

All of my past tanks (and hers) have been started from another, beginning with my 29 gallon that came to life from BillyR's 450 lol. So i wanted to take everything very slowly and let the various levels of bacteria culture and grow to the point where they can self-sustainably process waste and the nitrogen cycle. Being that it paused for a period on Nitrite, i did some research and found this article (http://reefkeeping.com/issues/2005-06/rhf/index.htm) explaining what you just said, about the various extremely high tolerances marine life for nitrite. Still though, more importantly I wanted to wait through and allow the bacteria a proper amount of time to establish itself in this brand new tank. Had it been live rock or live sand and coming from a sustained reef environment, i wouldnt have thought twice about it. But erring on the side of caution in this instance was the choice we made.

After a few test runs of ghost feeding and testing for results intermittently over the next days, we determined that the bacteria alone was processing the food out and that it was able to sustain life on its own.

All good stuff Xavier. That article for Dr. Holmes Farley says it all. It’s just for us folks that came from the freshwater side, where nitrites are problematic, thinking that it is the same case with saltwater. I originally thought the same when I first started saltwater.

As you know, with this hobby, slow is the way to go. You guys are doing great with this new tank. Looking good!

Exactly. We decided its better to be safe then sorry! I actually enjoyed watching it drop every day. And enjoyed the ghost feedings! Now I have my live life and I couldn't be happier :)

haha trust me i came from freshwater tanks for the first 18 years of my life lol. grew up with a 125 full of snakeheads lol thanks dad. I honestly didnt even really know until my second salt tank cause the nitrite spiked in the move and i panicked, because exactly as you said, they are very problematic in freshwater and many times over more deadly
