proventing future spills

wow this thread really took off. well i have 2 solutions to my problem. 1 to put the stand in a container about 12" high so if any water overflows, it goes into the container. this idea reguires more work and is uglier, but is better since i get to keep my sump.
2 to put the intake for the skimmerin the part of the overflow box so if it leaks it will only leak very little. and to disconnect the sump all together, this is easier, but i don't get to keep my sump.

what do you think is better?

Brian - part of the problem is that most of the time you buy an ASV kit. Float valve, check valve, solenoid valve, misc fittings and so on are all included in one package so it's tougher to mess up.

Nick - 6 of 1 or half a dozen of the other. Your choice.

Hey Nick

Sorry for hijacking this thread! I had forgotten that you had started it with a totally different problem!  ::)

Maybe I am reading this wrong.. but are you going to put the whole stand in a container?
While that would work.. you would need to break down your tank..then if it doesnt sit totally level inside the container, you would have a whole new set of problems! Plus the fact it would look terrible.

Did you drill a back siphon hole in your return line? This will stop your return line from causing a siphon if the power goes out. They may cause some splashing noise while the pump is running, but they are pretty much fool proof.

I ALWAYS overdrive my HOB overflow boxes.. pretty much running the max (or more) gph through them. It keeps the siphon running strong. You just need to make sure you arent running too much water in your sump.

I haven't had an overflow problem in a long time. (Until tonight I'm sure, since I said that  ;) )

HTH

i think i'll just remove the sump all together and use it to do w/c. mix new water in the 10. remove 10 gallons from the 20 and just pump the new water back in.

Here we go again..

I bought a check valve. installed it between the RO pure water output, which then goes into the bottom of the ASV which then goes to the DI. As far as I can tell everything is hooked up properly but the waste water continues to flow.

What the hell am I doing wrong now? I closed the float valve for about a minute and the waste water kept coming out . I tested the check valve, it works. I reversed the whole thing (all the connections to the ASV) to make sure I didnt hook it up wrong...still the same result. Can the ASV be faulty? Is there a way I can test it?

Thanks

I am running at 50psi if that helps at all.

I installed the same ASV on Merv's unit. Let me try to dig up the info I used and we'll go from there.

If it helps any.. It is a spectrapure inline check valve from premium aquatics

Thanks Rich

Hey Brian,

Things could be worse, like pouring RODI onto one of your ballasts!

Darn, I miss my actinics! Hope UPS is quick this week!

Holy Crap! That sucks Bill!!

You have to tell us how you did it

The water thingy came out of our garbage can that we were pouring RO/DI into and we ended up with a very wet basement floor! Glad it wasn't any closer to our POWER PANEL than it was! (same wall, 4' to the left!). If it isn't one thing it sure is another!!

Bill! What did you do to your ballast?!

And Brian, sorry I can't help you... I haven't installed a float switch on mine, but when you're done I could use some help :D

I DID A DUMB THING!!

I top off my 55 with a 500 ml graduated cylinder and a drip hose that I usually perch on top of my canopy. My ballasts are mounted on the back edge of the canopy.

I've been in bed with the flu and a fever since late Christmas day and stumbled downstairs yesterday to do a quick tank check. I started my topoff and did some checks on the other tanks. I was a little distracted by the fact that I have a Flame Angel in QT that has a bit of fin rot now. I went back to the 55 and poured some more RODI into the cylinder and overflowed a bit.

Well it was a BIT more than I thought and it flowed into and shorted out one of my ballasts. As of this morning it still didn't work so I guess this isn't one of those things that recovers after it dries out! I have a 2 ballast setup so the tank is still getting light. I'm sure it will be OK until UPS gets here, I did 3 day select.

I will be coming up with a better top off strategy in the future, and I will stay away from the tanks in the future when I'm not feeling well!

I have a Kent Aquadose if you want it. It works pretty good, holds 5 gallons and has a adjustable drip rate "thing" like an I.V.

SOLD!

Thats what I was thinking of until I've run out of other things to buy at which time I'll plumb up some super fancy automated topoff system and window cleaner!

Maybe I'll call it the REEF GADGET! Catchy huh??

BTW, Hi nick! What have you decided to do?

It's actually working! I had it hooked up right, I guess it just needed to build up enough pressure to shut off the ASOV. It takes about 15 minutes for the waste water to shut off. I'm ready when you are Phyl!

Thanks for the help Rich.  :)

15 minutes seems kinda long. Probably because your running at 50lb; re: no booster pump. Higher pressure via booster pump and warm water via DIY mixing chamber increase the RO membrane efficiency a lot. (yes, more "optional" equipment) HTH

There is a complete schematic of my RO/DI setup in my gallery on RC.

I thought 50 psi was good. :(

Oh well.. Here we go again!!!

I'll check our your gallery.. I am interested in the DIY mixing chamber.. I tried to loop about 10 feet of tubing into a 5 gallon container of heated water, but that didn't seem to do anything.

OK, I am going to stop looking at your gallery.. It gets me more confused.. I think I will just leave well enough alone! ::)
