Skimmer for 24G Aquapod

Hey I just got a 24G Aquapod. Love it! Been thinking of getting a skimmer! Any recommendation?

Thank you

I'd recommend skipping the skimmer and keeping up on water changes. ;)

Skimmers are such a pain, and the smaller they are, the more useless they seem to be, IMO.

From reading different forums I think the Tunze Nano 9002 is the most popular as far as people being satisfied with it. A lot of people have also tried the Fission Nano Skimmer http://www.current-usa.com/fission.html and it get's mixed reviews.

The fission is cheap if you get it from the right place and might be worth a shot if you have the patience to tune it properly.

Many other people feel exactly like Subliminal and just do water changes.

I love to see how much, a good little skimmer can do on a Nano and how far it can push out a needed water change.

They can be, if you find the right skimmer. 5 Gal water change every week is not so bad, but I have another tank. Thanks for your input.

Carlos, I was looking at that skimmer, not expensive. What size nao you have and do you use a skimmer. Post a pic of your nano tank, how you have it setup. Appreciate your comments. Have a nice day! Johnny

Hello Jonny,

I've had several small (2.5g) to medium and larger size tanks (see my sig). At present all my tanks are connected together as one large system except for a couple which are my 44g pentagon and a new JBL 24g Nano Cube (actually my kids tank).

On the pentagon I've got a Sea Clone 150 which everyone says is a terrible skimmer. I purchased that skimmer on purpose for this tank because it was on sale for 50% and was the form factor that fit the tank well. I also wanted the challenge of getting the skimmer to perform decently. I'm happy with the results so far with it so I picked up a Sea Clone 100 for my dad's 40g tank. These skimmers are flaky and hard to adjust as it takes a lot of time to notice the effect of the change but once tuned do work pretty decent.

On the 24g I haven't done a water change on it yet. Basically a few days ago I swiped sand, water and 25-30 lbs of rock from my other system and got it up and running. After a day of letting the water clear we added a long nose hawk and about 40 or zoa frags, colonies and a couple of other corals. It's only a few days old and I haven't done a water change on it yet.

What I'm doing with this tank is recording daily water parameters so I can create a trend. After getting a couple of baselines after water changes I'm going to add a fission skimmer since they are so cheap and do the same thing. Then I'm going to replace the fission with the Tunze and do the same again for a few baselines.

At that point I'll have some decent data to work off of to really get an idea of how well these little skimmers actually work. I'll have decent data to be able to determine how well they can help keep nitrates down and how long they can help postpone a water change if at all.

I'm sure the Tunze is going to be the "ruler" but the real question I want to answer is going to be, how much does it really help. If it is only good enough to keep nitrates down for say an extra day or two on this size tank is it really worth it to the average user?

I wouldn't recommend the Sea Clones to anyone unless it's for playing and they have other pumps around to trade and experiment with. It a "junk" skimmer for the average person. The fission seems like it can help a little if you can tune it properly but it's so small I can't help wonder how much it really helps at all. The Tunze Nano 9002 is what I'd recommend solely on all the feedback I've read but like I said I haven't used on on my own tanks (yet).

Carlo

Oh and besides the two small tanks I've got 4 skimmer for my connected systems with 3 of them online. One is a spare. 2 are commercial skimmers and 2 are hand built. My hand built skimmers carry the brunt of the load. It's not to say they are better for anyone else but I built them with specific goals in mind pertaining to my system.

Nice 'pod Johnny.

Just to add another curve ball here, ::),
I picked up a Sapphire Aquatics skimmer awhile back in a trade. Sapphire makes skimmers that fit in the rear chambers of all in ones while still keeping the stock hood. The skimmer I got I believe was intended for a 24 aquapod. I am using this in a modded AC110 fuge that is on my 20L prop tank. It pulls out a good amount of funk every day. Not a very dry skimmate, but very dark. I have not used any other skimmers on this tank, so I really cannot compare. Like Carlo, I have read many threads and reviews on the Fission Nano skimmer with most saying its just junk. But I have been tempted to spend the $22 just to play. ;D I hope this helps. :)

And not to high jack your thread here but.....

Carlo, I am very interested to know what the results of your skimmer testing will be! Sounds like the makings of a great thread!

OK, end of high jack.... :D

Best of luck with your new 'pod Johnny!!

Thanks for your feedback! I don't think Carlos mind, we are here to exchange experiences and knowledge. By the way are you selling your skimmer?

i have the fission on my nano....thing is tricky to get functioning right..every other day it works funny...sucks too much water in the cup and not foam...im still playin with it to make sure i got it at the right level....tunze are the better brand of skimmers though i guess thats why the price is what it is...

Johnny, I haven't read much on the saphire skimmer for Nanos. Do you have a link for the one you use? Love to see it.

needreefunds, I'm interested in seeing the results too. I'll be sure to post the info in a thread. It obviously won't be done under controlled conditions or super scientific but should be a good set of reference or comparison data. If nothing else you'll get my feedback on the trials and tribulations of getting each skimmer working and how much gunk each one pulls.

nanoguy, that's exactly the type of thing I hear about with the fission skimmer. Do you think you'll ever be able to get it adjusted right or do you think you threw your money away on the purchase? Do you think I should skip testing this skimmer and do the Saphire and Tunze skimmers instead?

Carlo

Let us know how well it works after you get it and have it installed and running.

Looking forward to it.

Carlo

We have sold a few of the saphire skimmer and have heard good and bad...worst thing is it takes playing around with it a bit to get it to skim properly..emptying collection cup regularly..but most say it works well...wolverine not sure where you live but we have one instore 129.99..

Do you happen to know if this skimmer or the Tunze will fit inside a JBL 24g Nano? I'd much rather have one inside the case then hanging outside which I'm not opposed to doing but would rather not.

Carlo

If im not mistaken the larger size cubes whether the 29g bio,24 aquapod, or 24 jbl cube all have a specific size skimmer made for them(minimal modification on some).the smaller sized cubes have an interchangeable skimmer..We just happen to have in stock a 24 aqua pod and a 29 bio cube skimmer..

I live in the Bronx, NY 10462, but I work in Taneck, NJ 07666. Where are you located? How much you charge to ship in the event you are to far?
