Skimmer Upgrade?

Hey folks, I am currently making the jump from a 55g FOWLR to a 180g and I am wondering if I should blow my budget and upgrade my skimmer. I was planning on using my Red Sea Berlin skimmer from my 55g. I was looking at a ASM G-3. I only have a 13x12 foot print in my sump to work with, and the ASM G-3 would need a 11x12 footprint. In other words, a perfect fit. $309 seems to be the going rate online, before shipping. If I do decide to go for it, anyone know where I can get a better price?

I have an ASM G-3 on a 150 and it seems pretty much maxed although another 30 gallons shouldn't make that much of a difference. Check out Premium Aquatics. We have quarterly group buys where you'll get 15% off and free shipping. Ya just missed one in January.

Oh yea, forgot to mention that. Group Buys are a benefit of Membership.

oh - was going to mention other benefits if he starts a tale of the tank thread...i mean - he found out about this board in the parking lot of ANimal and THings...which is like what, not even a cup of gas away from AO...(although I guess that depends on your vehicle)

I'm the one that told him about the club and AO earlier this week.

I dont know, I drive an F150 so that extra mile or so to AO could break the bank! Just kidding! I wish I would have known about this place sooner. Anyhow, I do plan on becoming a memeber. Like I just told Bob, I have been quite busy with the new tank and trying not to neglect the family too much. Ok, enough with the excuses, I will fill out the application today!

So, back to the original topic of this thread, do you guys think it is worth the money to upgrade my skimmer?

Also, how much would this item cost at AO?

1. You can never go wrong with an upgraded skimmer

2. AO would be the one to answer that question. You could post a question in their forum.

OK I have submitted my application for membership and started a tale of the tank thread. so much for actually working this morning.

do you guys think the ASM G-3 is a good skimmer for my set-up?

sinkingbeach sent me links to a couple used ones, I am just always a little hesitant about buying used equipment. your thoughts?

just inspect the equipment and have whoever youre buying it from hook it up in front of you. i bought a used reef devil skimmer and it has a slight leak, its not even really a leak but it beads at some seams, silicone has not fixed it and i have to use it in sump instead of out of sump like i wanted.

G3 is ok if you have minimal load but if you are going to Heavy fish and corals I would suggest no on that skimmer. Skimmer is one part of equipment that will help you a lot on this hobby.

You can get a really great bargain deal on used items - assuming the item is still in quality/working order. still - I have read more than enough of unscrupulous people selling items that were pictured well -but shipped poorly or not as pictured. Worse case was the one guy who didn't ship anything and then got booted off the board (happened on another board). Anyways bottom line is you have to make the decision as to whether to do business with the individual or not. If you are on the boards long enough - you should be able to tell the folks who are just on it to "make a buck" and those who are geniunely interested in helping out.

good luck!

well i am very hesitant about buying used items these days, been burnt too many times already. my main concern about getting a differnt skimmer (other than the ASM G3) is wether or not it will fit in my sump. I need it to fit into a 12x13 footprint. Either way, I had a bit of an accident today and my budget is pretty much shot right now (see my tale of the tank for details). I have to wait till after I get my LR/LS from TBS before I buy anything else. I am not sutre how much the shipping will be and I dont want to sell myself short.

like i said, the area in my sump is really limited the type of skimmer i get. i am thinking now that maybe i should forget about using the large part of the sump as a refugium and just put a bigger skimmer in that area. what do you guys think?
