Just a thought I have never tried this bit maybe get a tiny fish hook and bait it with a piece of shrimp or something and put it where the crab is. When he starts eating slowly pull on the line pulling him out of his "hole". Do this with the lights out. I go crabbing all the time this would basically be like using drop lines for blue claws. When you get him out of the hole either you or your son be ready with the net. It works pulling blue claws from the bay so it may be worth a shot.

Edit: make sure it's a good size piece of shrimp.

And with Kevin’s method with the hook and shrimp, you will still want a pot of boiling water ready…..with a little Old Bay seasoning in there. Nothing better than eating that little devil once you catch him!

Keep them coming. I have answers, but I think a October Contest is brewing...

Sunny I have 2 ideas
1st cut the handle off a small or large fish net place on the bottom of the tank cover with sand tie fishing string to the corners when he walks on top pull up
2nd when I need to catch a fish I us the 2 liter bottle approach and it works every time why don't you use that on a smaller scale like a water bottle inject some food and wait for him to walk in he will eventually then he's trapped

I don't know why I didn't think about this before. There is a thread in RC talking about the use of lasers to battle aptasia. I would think it could cook a rouge crab as well.

Know of anyone with a flexible endoscope...or something similar. Use it at night and have a grasping/biopsy attachment on. When in sight simply use biopsy clamp to break him onto little pieces or deal a fatal blow and let the clean up crew take care of the rest.

Somebody told of using ladies hosiery with food stuffed inside it and anchored just outside his home. His claws get stuck in the nylon and can't get out. Have not tried it but I did hear that it works.

Just keep feeding him expensive fishes until he's too big to hide in his hole. Then scoop him out.

Used this method to remove a murderous coral banded shrimp.
