Maybe when you are all done you could give me a hand on my canopy build for my tank. There will be beer and food!!

Thanks, and yes I did save it Jim. I even offered it to Dave (Fatoldsun) since he was working on a 40b sump too. He didn't take me up on it though.

The design has one flaw... it's made for a set distance between baffles and if you have different needs then its worthless. I do have a solution for that though if I ever decide to patent it. ;)

I didn't know there was a jig offered up. Looking good George. I will say one thing, given how hard taking my sump apart was I was far less concerned about getting the silicone perfect. I also made the baffles a 1/16" too big and they held themselves in nicely while it all set up and cured. No tape required. I also didn't worry about baffles leaking. Water travels back and forth between the sections

One thing I noticed, I suggest making the cutout for the drain and return oversized. I made it too small initially (ver1.0) and I jumped on the opportunity to make it larger before I reassembled everything.

Great work on the stand. I remember you saying that all the equipment will be housed there. Will you also be putting all powerheads on that side as well. Freeing up the other side from obstructions?

I hadn't thought that far ahead John, but that's not a bad idea. I currently only have 1 MP-40 so I'll try that one on the cabinet side instead of the other end it's at now. I'll most likely add another MP-40 or maybe one of the Jaebo pumps. But I'd prefer a VorTech since I already have full remote control of that via my Reef Angel addon.

I just saw a home improvement show using that red sealer stuff. Should work great.

I'm curious to see the stand complete, not sure where the tall vertical section fits...

Well, after a long hard winter and a weekend with some free time, I finally got back into working on my stand.

Not much of an update, but an important one! I spent most of yesterday making final cuts on all my trim wood, and sanded them all down in preparation for staining.

Today, I layed all the pieces out on a tarp and got the first coat of stain on them all. Even though some pieces will be hidden from view, I decided to stain both sides for 2 reasons... 1.) as a protectant saltwater conditions, and 2.) because I wanted to see which side turned out looking the best after staining.

Anyway, here's a pic of the finished product. Note - I left some of the edges unstained for now because they have my labeling system on there. I plan to give those edges a coat of stain before sealing but not until I can make up some temporary stick on labels so I know what piece goes where.

I think I might be good after only one coat of stain, but I'll wait a few hours and see what it looks like. If not, I should be able to get a coat of sealer on tonight too!

Thanks guys!

Yes Dave, the trim is all oak. Well, actually, I have some 1/4 pine luan board in the center of the 4 framed out pieces... but the rest is all oak.

In case anyone is interested, the 4 framed out pieces will be:

Top Left piece - Right end of my canopy. It will be attached permanently to the canopy frame. This is the viewable end of the peninsula.

Bottom Left piece - Back side of my tall side cabinet. It's only going to be at the top portion since the bottom portion will be hidden by the wall. The bottom half below this is just 3/4" plywood.

2 pieces on right side - These are going to be the front/back canopy doors. They will be attached by a piano hinge and swing up to open and allow access to the canopy and top of the tank.

Thanks guys!

James, yea, I prefer the lighter stains also, so I was very grateful that MatteZ gave me his leftover stain. It was just enough to finish all of my trim wood.

After 1 coat of sealer (clear satin) it did seem to get slightly darker, but it's still light enough for my tastes.

Next weekend, I hope to be able to sand it all down again and get another coat of sealer on it. Most likely I'll be able to start adding the trim to the frame after that's done.

Well, it's been a while since my last update. Family life and weather have limited my work on it, but I'm getting there!

I got the last coat of sealer on all my oak trim so it was time to start dressing the furniture. Here are a few cell phone pics of my progress:

The canopy door on the full front pic is just clamped on for an idea of it finished. I was going to attach both of them with piano hinges, but the ones I bought had a brass finish. I decided to wait and order aluminum ones instead. I should get them by Thursday and install them next weekend.

After that, I just have to make my doors and I'll be done. The upgrade move may happen before the doors are done though.
