tropical fish at mansaquan?

i was spear fishing yesterday afternoon and my buddy pointed out two interesting looking fish. i didn't even know there were fish till they swam away startled. i thought they were almost leaves or something. whatever they were they were pretty flat and had a brownish color to them. they definitely looked like some type of tropical fish.

does anybody have a web site that shows common fish that are likely to be found up here especially when the water is warm? i'm curious as to what types they are.

this is probably no where near what you saw but flounder/fluke are flat brownish color fish---

It might have been a butterfly fish.Years ago a club that had meeting in Metuchen would go down to the shore and catch them.

this time of year we get alot of tropicals in the area. there are tons of triggers on the wrecks and last summer we were catchin sheepshead in the inlet

after showing links of pics. my buddy seems to think it was a longnose filefish. however, they were pretty small about 2-3inches. from the pics filefish seem to get pretty big. perhaps i can be lucky enough to see some again this weekend and report back.

nonetheless they were very unique looking fish. (definitely not triggers or fluke)

hey guys. this weekends snorkeling didn't reveal any of the fish that i saw last weekend, however, i believe i may have seen a school of puffer fish. i took a few dives down and saw a school of about a hundred fish to what looked very similar to puffer fish. anyone else experience/hear about this? i'm curious if that's were they were.


even more interesting we went to shark river to do some crabbing. while snorkeling there i saw a fish that looked identical to a dwarf lionfish. he was perched on a peice of seaweed and when i approached he skipped along to other pieces of seaweed. his fins in the side were a whitish or yellowish color, and he wasnt bigger than 1.5inches. i heard there have been lionfish spotted in manasquan etc. so my guess is it's possible. is there any other native fish that look very close to dwarf lionfish?

i think i should get an underwater camera to help with the idenfication of these things.

sea robin possibly since i've never seen one that small, however it didn't have the same characteristics as sea robins i've seen

hi everyone,
I would like to go to places that I can catch sea creatures with my son. He is 14 mos :) but he like these stuff. Last June, we went to Key Largo and we has fun by just catching little fishes.
It is good to know about NJ shores as well. I live in NJ for 20 years but don't know anything about NJ shores line.

2 weeks ago at the inlet.It was loaded with hundreds of sharks .I was surfing. there were schools of black and white verticly striped fish which appeared to be damsels of some sort. I was there this past weekend and nothing exciting. hoping this weekend is better. Are you guys the two young men I paddled over to and asked if anything was cool to be seen?

it might have been us. my buddy said he saw around 30 sharks when he dove down. this was when the water was crystal clear. it may have been. my buddy is the one with long hair and looks like jesus haha. we also have a yellow inflatable flag.

Mark, nothing has been planned as of yet. I would love to do another trip like we have in the past, jut not sure what kind of time folks have with MACNA coming up.

I am gonna try to make it up there this weekend maybe. Just need to see what my schedule, the tides and the weather look like for this weekend.
