Tying into the Basement - Pic Intensive

New member to the site. I have to tell you in advance that I was quite impressed by the pictures. It is apparent that you did a good job in planning out the setup as well as documenting with the Visio drawings. I am in the early stages of setting up a system in the basement of my residence. At this point I have built the stand for the 215 Oceanic ReefReady out of 2x4 & 2x6's. The thing is rock solid. Some of the equipment will come from my existing 65 reef. We also plan on adding a row of shallow / slow flow tanks down the road. This would probably add approximately 100 - 150 gallons to the closed system.

Tank was delivered last week. It took three of us to get it in place. I would not recommend moving this tank with three people unless they are frequent gym members. We used a furniture dolly to move it from the driveway , through the patio and kitchen, and finally downstairs. Like I previously mentioned it was not for the weak of heart.

Getting back to the original scope of this thread. Very impressed with your setup. I had a few questions that I was wondering if you could provide some feedback on given the duration you have had the tank setup.

1) How do you like the Sequence pump? Any general comments or feedback about this brand for a consumer considering a 4300?

2) What type of skimmer are you currently running? Any objections or comments?

3) Have you run into any moisture or even worse (mold) issues in your home?

3) Do you have any "lessons learned" either with the actual plumbing design or setup as well as any other part of the project that you could share?

Thanks in advance.

Bill

Hi Bill, thanks for compliments and welcome to our forum! Here are the answers to your questions:

1) How do you like the Sequence pump? Any general comments or feedback about this brand for a consumer considering a 4300?

Love it! I would buy another one in a minute flat. It is very quiet and very powerful. The best part is MDM (the manufacturer of the pump) has fantastic customer service. A little over a year after firing up my system, I must have sucked some carbon or something into the pump. It was still running well but was making a bit of a grinding noise. I called customer service and they readily shipped me a new pump (overnight) for free. I had to send the old one back but the new one came right away and I was back in business, silently.

2) What type of skimmer are you currently running? Any objections or comments?

We're using an MRC 3R (My Reef Creations 3, Recirculating model). Once again, I love it. It's a great skimmer that's really easy to dial in and it produces some great skimate (if there is such a thing!).

3) Have you run into any moisture or even worse (mold) issues in your home?

We have a dehumidifier running down there pretty regularly (it drains into my house sump, so I never have to empty the collection bucket). I haven't noticed any mold or moisture but I have noticed that my tools seem to be a bit rustier than they used to be.

3) Do you have any "lessons learned" either with the actual plumbing design or setup as well as any other part of the project that you could share?

This is tough one. I'm pretty tired right now and can't really think of anything major. The one thing I can say is that when you are assembling the manifold, leave the coupler between the T's long enough to be able to cut and replace in case you have any leaks. I didn't do that and had a heck of a time trying to heat up and pry out the little piece out of a leaking fitting, It was either that or rebuild the whole thing, which I was in no hurry to do. It was after this little problem that I learned of RainRShine. GO WITH THAT FIRST! It is great stuff that pretty much guarantees a good seal.

The drawing was a god send. I was able to pour over it a dozen or so times in order to determine where I was going to need step-downs and elbows and any other types of fittings. It definitely saved on trips to the Depot.

I'll try and think of more things tomorrow but in all honesty, there's not a whole lot, if anything, that I'd change. I am really happy with how it all turned out.

Again, welcome to NJRC. Feel free to ask any questions you may have along the way. I'm not sure how close you are to Jackson, but if you ever want to swing by and see the system in action, just let me know. The door is always open.

Oh boy, I have some SERIOUS cleaning to do if I'm going to be posting pics of the science lab. I'll see what I can do.

Well, here is a start, I updated my drawing to include the Nilsen Reactor, Nitrate Reactor, additional 55g water change drum and the 125g "frag" tank (which is looking more and more like a display tank every day!)

I hope that clears things up for everyone! I'll try to post some pics in a little while.

Here are some updated pics. Just one request: Firemen, Fire Marshalls and Eletrical Code Inspectors, PLEASE HIT THE BACK BUTTON NOW! My wiring is a complete mess. Every time I try to organize it I wind up with more of a tangled mess than I started with. That being said, here are we go.

Hope all is well. Any suggestions based on your experience on how best to setup "baffles" to help block/eliminate air bubbles returning to the tank from the rubbermaid? I would think with the output from the skimmer the return bubbles may be a problem.

Thanks in advance do much for your thoughts...

We don't use any baffles, per se. We have our drain line and skimmer return feeding into filter socks. That does a great job of removing any bubbles and preventing them from getting recirculated. I know a lot of people frown on filter socks but they work pretty well for us. We have about 4 sets of them. One set is in use and the rest are clean and waiting. Every month we change out the dirty set with a clean one. It works really well and I never have to worry about micro bubbles in the display.

We live in Jackson. If you're ever in the area and want to swing by, I'd be glad to show you the setup.

HTH.

Happy Thanksgiving. The basement system is coming along slow :) I will have to post a few pictures shortly. Quick question before turkey goes in the oven.. What model phosphate reactor are you using on this size system. I have been researching for a while and can only come up with Phosban Reactor by 2 Little Fish or SR35 by PM.

Thanks in advance.

Happy Thanksgiving Bill.

We're using one of the Two Little Fish reactors. It sounds like it may be small for our system but seems to do a good enough job. Our phosphates always seem to be pretty low, as long as we stay on top of media changes.

You know, one very nice perk to knowing people like you guys is...having pictures to show my wife. ;D "See how easy you have it? Look at what I COULD be doing."

NIIIIIIICE! Let me know how I can help out, Bill. I can definitely put something together for you if you want.

Instead of looking at boring drawings, why don't you and Cindy come down and have a few beers while we look at it in person! Hmmm, that may scare her into changing her mind though!

I think that would be good, maybe after we get through Mother's Day madness!

Thanks. ;)
