Vinegar Dosing

Thanks. I was just wondering if it had an adverse effects since it is an acid. I've used it to lower elevated PH's before but never dosed it long term.

MadReefer what size tank do you have? The reason I am asking is because 4ml is really low for vinegar, and probably wont get you to zero. I am currently dosing 18ml on a 40 breeder and I am almost maintaining 0.

mark the reason why vodka didn't work for you is that you didn't read the fine print. You are supposed to dose the tank and not that glass cup next to the tank for yourself. ;)

Phil, I think you have hit the bottle as I am dosing vinegar not vodka.

Saltkreep88, its a 75g tank and yes it is low but I am nervous in doing this so am going very slow.

Day 16 and no change in Nitrates, still slightly less than 5ppm. I will resume water changes now.

Saltkreep88, I read that happens sometimes. I had bad cyano when dosing Vodka and stopped, this was about2 yrs ago. I read that if you does vodka and get cyano add or switch to vinegar and vice versa if you started dosing vinegar first. I read that sugar was not as great as initially thought. Good luck and keep use posted. You can add to this thread so all results from everyone can be captured in one spot good or bad.

Hahah - yeah well you know where I work, so i have to keep from going crazy.

i know this is a vinegar dosing thread but you mentioned above about vodka. sorry should have quoted it for context! :)
anyways - tagging along!

Phil, was thinking of vodka but many sites claim bad cyano outbreak. Vinegar is not as bad. It will go away eventualy with either method. But I am trying my best to prevent it.

to prove if the vinegar is really working...
have you considerate to STOP the dosing - then see if your reading would still stay @ 5 ? or went back up?

I add it to the return chamber of my sump.Dave, I am waiting for 0ppm and will stop and see if it goes up.

Glad this is working for you. Are you dumping the vinegar all at once in the sump? Does the tank have a vinegar smell to it? Are you running carbon?

Are you noticing a drop in ph after the dose? Are you feeding or adding anything for the corals while dosing, amino,s ,fuel,etc.. Also do you see any noticeable difference in colors. Thanks.

I add Calcium, Alk and Mag twice a week. I add Strontium / Molybdenum once a week. PH is at 8.0 but is usually between 8.0 and 8.4.
My zoas are living longer and seem more open and brighter. My 5" green toadstool would only open once a month for maybe a day. It has now been open for a few weeks
with nice green polyp extension. Also, some other softies like Devil's hand is starting to show polyp extension.

Just a quick update. With the 10ml a day I have noticed a bad cyano outbreak on one piece of LR next to my power head. The rock gas some brown star polyps on it.
Well, this is expected as it gets worse before getting better. I have not tested the nitrates yet, to busy injecting the turtle and shoveling snow.

Do you have any sps in your tank? If yes noticed any better color/growth? Can you tell me what skimmer/lighting you have? Did you get rid of your cyano problem? Removed the rock or scrub? Did it come back after that? Thank.
