Vodka Dosing

Here is the DIY version of NOPOX
"NOPOX, a diy mix of 500 mls vinegar (5%), 375 mls vodka (80 proof), and 125 mls RO/DI matches the ratios."
Thabk you. Gonna get this mixed up. What dosing schedule do you follow? I'm basically running 100g

I don’t currently vodka dose however when I did in the past this was the ratio I used to make the solution

If you are just doing straight vodka (tends to work better this way as you can just dump the entire thing in), I dose about 4ml a day for the first week then 7ml a day after that. You can keep an eye on your nutrient levels to see if you need to adjust it.

Vinegar is better suited for dosing over a longer period since the dosing is a larger amount and can cause quite a ph spike. Less swings in our tanks the better.

Dosing the DIY version is the same as the commercial NOPOX. To summarize, it's between 1-3 mls for each 25 gallons. When first starting I'd do 1ml per 25g for the first week. If it looks good, up to 2mls per 25g for the second week. And finally, go to 3mls per 25g....until nitrates/phosphates drop. What you're looking for as you up the dose is cyano all of a sudden showing up. If it pops up, back down to the next lower dose for a week or so. If the cyano goes away, go back up the the next higher dose. They say once your N and P fall down to an acceptable level, drop to a "maintenance dose" of 1 ml per 25 gallons. FYI, I'm at 3 mls per 25 gallons for years. Here's the actual NOPOX chart:

Thank you. I started dosing vingar aboutn1 weeks ago now. And I upped the dose on Thursday. Today I noticed some cyano. Was wondering where that came from so I'll cut the dose back. Thanks. You answered a question without me having to ask it lol

I posted earlier about using filters floss, I wander what is your take on this?

I wander if by changing the filter floss 2 times per week the vodka/vinegar will not create too much bacteria. I know the skimmer helps a lot with this situation.

I do dose vodka but not much at all and I would like to increase the dosage for nutrients control

I'm not quite sure what you are asking. Changing the filter floss isn't going to impact bacterial growth. It might slightly help in removing some of the bacteria associated with the detritus, but your skimmer will be doing the majority of this "exporting." Whatever carbon you are using, assuming there are sufficient nitrates and phosphates, all that carbon is consumed....it is the limiting food source for the bacteria.

Yeah that was my first thought and why I dose vinegar in low doses. I don’t have a skimmer my tank it’s a 45 all in one with little space
Thanks

Oh! no skimmer.....Carbon dosing needs; requires, a means of exporting the growing bacteria. If you don't do this, you're simply growing bacteria that eventually dies and recycles the N, P and C in you tank. The big question mark is what, if anything, does floss remove in the way of bacteria.

My suggestions.....pick one:
1. Stop dosing carbon.
2. Buy a skimmer...and yes, there are options for an AIO.... you can go with a HOB skimmer or a small one mounted right in the DT. I had a Tunze 9004 in a JBJ 28.

3. Do a little experiment....testing if floss removes enough bacteria to impact N and P levels. Dose carbon and test N and P over time while changing floss as needed. I'm guessing that it might do a little bit of N and P reduction, but not much. Actually, as I typed this, this would be a great little experiment....Does filter floss remove enough growing bacteria to reduce N and P levels.

More about fitting a skimmer in an AIO 45....this video shows a number of skimmers - HOB or fitting in the back portion of a JBJ 45. Interestingly a Tunze 9004 fits in the back section of the tank.

I’m going to see how much it comes down by testing more often!!

Glad to hear it's making a huge improvement, if you are happy with where you nutrients are at and once your tank is cleaned up make sure you keep doing a small maintenance dose.

Phos - 0.25
Nitrate - 0

Get your nitrate up
I am concerned a little about that but don't want to do to much at once. I thought both Phos and Nitrate would fall inline with the dosing. I am going to try doing 1ml per day and see what happens.

Well a week of dosing 1ml i started to see some green and red algae so today started dosing 2ml, will see how that goes.
