What made you get into this hobby?

Sometimes I look back and wonder why I even got into this and how. Sometimes I wanna quit, sell it and grumble in a corner. I then remember what ive learned though and the friendships ive built. I cant even remember life before my reefing days. My intro story isn't very exciting but here it is.

I was a long time customer at aquarium center for my freshwater 55 gallon. This was my dads tank who is deceased and I originally set it up just as a tribute to him. I quickly got hooked and went from neons to more exotic angels and gouramis and then also plants. I had always admired the biocube and wanted a saltwater tank but I was afraid. I was at petsmart and saw a biocube 14 on clearance and it was a green light from there. I started with that tank and then added a 30 long 6 months later which then became my 40b about a year later. I still have that biocube which is now my frag tank. My 55 gallon is in storage and I wish I could use because of its sentimental value but its just a terrible footprint for a reef (no offense to anyone running one). Ive been obsessed since that day and it has its ups and downs but i wouldnt trade it for any other hobby. The joy I get and the friendships ive made vastly outweigh the cost and cons.

What's your story?

My ex girlfriend bought me a 10g tank so I made it into a FW tank, that turned into a 20g long FW and that turned into a 55g FW. Soon after that I bought a 180G FW tank and was loving it. I was always into fish tanks, my dad had a 55g and a 20L when i was just a kid.

Soon after the 180 was set up, I bought a 16g SW tank to start. That turned into a 29g tank and that's when I met you Lol Sold my 180g, said goodbye to the FW world and bought a 90g and began stockpiling corals lol

Been doing it ever since and I absolutely love this hobby. And I agree with you, the people I've met and the friendships I've made have been enough to weigh out the bad in this hobby.

I grew up abroad, and I got in to the hobby because I missed snorkeling with my Dad. Seeing the clown and the damsels and the butterfly he bought me made me think of him, and made me miss him less when he was abroad and I was here. That is how I got started back in the 1990s :)

Then she crashed her fw tank in law school and switched to saltwater and then I was hooked.

For me my story was my dad always had a 29 gal FW tank. When I moved in with my wife (well at that time GF) we decided to get a 10 gal FW tank. From that we decided to go a little bigger and got a 55 gal FW with angelsfish and bala sharks. Well the movie finding memo came out and all and behold you can figure out the rest.

In 2009 I started dating my boyfriend, the minute I went into his room for the first time, I ran right over to his 75 gallon tank, with clown fish that were the biggest I've ever seen to this day! I fell in love right away with all the corals. He also worked at a fish store, which helped as well. A few months into our relationship I decided to get a fresh water sting ray! I loved that little guy, but he was bitten by my puffer and passed away. I decided to upgrade from fresh water to my first salt water tank within 6 months of our relationship. Given I didn't know nearly as much as I do now but I knew enough for a 20 gallon. I had my 20 gallon for about a year. Then I decided to get a biocube instead! However, I was very sick last year and how to sell from my tank, now I have my 40 breeder up and running :) I am so grateful for my boyfriend getting me into this hobby and providing me with the knowledge and guidance through all of this! I love having the ability to watch fish and coral grow every day little by little!

I will continue to love this hobby every day and support my boyfriend as he plans on opening a local coral store with his business degree in the soon future :) Finally everything he has dreamed and talked to me about since I met him 4 and a half years ago is finally going to come together!

BillyR98 (my next door neighbor) And his 450gal display that I could see from my room. I mean, how can you not want a tank seeing that every day.

I never got to try snorkeling! Do you still go often?

Dory and Nemo... I've since learned that Dory won't make it long in a small tank no matter what the guy at the LFS says:) We have a blue damsel named Dory now:)

My father too....When I was 5 years old he made my first fish tank out of an old car battery, yes a car battery!!!!!......He removed the top and the inner parts of the battery, cut one side, glued a piece of glass into that side, painted the interior silver color. He putted couple Fancy Guppies and added some methylene blue to the water to give a touch of blue.....Looked so cool.

Too cool, that sounds like the coolest diy project! I was on another down and a guy made a fishtank out of an amp!

I grew up in the United Arab Emirates, and we would go snorkeling at the coral islands off of Abu Dhabi, and when we would go away for weekends to Jebal Ali, Sharjah, Fujairah, and Oman we would snorkel there. The persian gulf and the sea of Oman are part of the arabian sea, and have very similar fish to the red sea.

i moved back from california and was looking for more *inside* hobbies that i could enjoy. i had always joked around about getting a fish tank and then actually started to do some research and found that you can keep a reef ecosystem in your home aquarium. i really thought that was a cool idea and once i saw all the pictures and did some more reading i was hooked and haven't been able to forget about it.
