White egg crate and phosphate...

I think it was '05 or '06 that I first heard of this as a potential problem. Since I was using a lot of it in my system at the time I decided to test it out on my own. I took two 2 gallon containers I had and filled them each with water from my tank, I then place a fairly large piece of equal size in each container, and left it there for a week. I gave each container a full battery of tests, and found no difference. So, if there was any PO4, it was undetectable.

Jim, was it brand new egg crate or was it in saltwater prior to the test??

Btw guys.. The OP user "Mark..." seems to be really bothered by this matter, he also asked for his build thread to be closed :/ hopefully he doesn't leave the forum bc of a few remarks that were made.

Unfortunately sarcasm cannot be noticed online "sitting here with my foil cap"

Well I obviously understood the humor in the matter but sometimes people don't like it. I'm just saying, it would suck to see a member go bc of something this stupid.

Unfortunately that may be the case here.

Mark sent me a PM requesting to close his build thread (I thought he was just starting a new one).
When I replied it was done he said thanks, he was leaving the club and just wanted to tidy up here before he left.

I wasn't sure why he said that at the time and asked why he was leaving but didn't get a reply yet. Guess now I know what he meant. :(

I'm quite sure you guys were just joking around but it seems like Mark might have been offended.

If any of you have accounts on RC, it probably wouldn't hurt to find him over there and apologize.

Thanks for this George. I knew he was serious and I don't even know him on a personal level.

Thanks for your previous effort Jim, I saw a few things besides leaching that could contribute to the algae. This was a nicely controlled experiment. More likely the algae is there due to change in water flow or light being reflected.
