I used to run both too. It's a powerful combination, and can really do wonders for your water chemistry.
Unfortunately, I had a number of incidents in which either (A) the Ca Reactor clogged and filled up with CO2, causing the pump to run dry, or (B) (Much Worse) The top up decided to give the...
Thanks Bob. I guess my reef problems are pretty minor compared to yours. I think when I get the phosphates down around nothing my colors will come back. Don't forget I offered to load you up with frags once you're back in a position to grow them again. Just give a call when that time comes.
Well amen to that. Cranking up the flow to my gfo pellets seems to be working. Phosphate is down to .09 today, need to cut it in half again, and again, etc.
The weird thing is flat-pack PE Mysis has very little "pack juice", it thwas into a juice-less lump. I always at least drain the juice from the Hikari mysis. Another stange thing, my fish don't like the Hikari Jumbo mysis very much, they are addicted to PE!
I think the PE Mysis is a phosphate intensive food too. I need to take it more easy with the mysis. I recently switched to pelleted gfo from the old fashioned kind and maybe it isn't doing the job. Also going to up my vodka dosing a little.
The bad luck continues. Some of my nicer acros are dead or dying. I think it's due to some things during the storm. Most parameters are fine but phosphate is way high, around .21! Cranked up my phosban reactors and I'm getting some water changes ready.
Hi Paul, cool picture from Fiji. I think it's worth noting that those are the BIG yellow longnose butterfly, Forcipiger longirostris, rather than the one we see usually in the trade, Forcipiger flavissimus. The big one is a harder to keep fish and is not importaed nearly as much. DD gets them...
One of you guys came over to buy frags this Spring and very thoughtfully brought me some rotifers. I can't for the life of me remember who it was. We talked about feeding them the paste. Who has the rotifers? I think I'm going to have seahorse fry soon! Need to buy some.
Nope, no chiller. I hope they go again. I have had no problem keeping the tank 72-75F.
We lost power on SUnday and it still isn't back. THANK GOD I BOUGHT A GENERATOR. My entire reef would be stinking death now if I hadn't got the generator.
I've been running the generator 6AM-11PM, then...
No power since 1:30AM Sunday moning. Makes you appreciate the VorTech battery backup...and the generator my wife made me buy last winter. All my stuff would be dead by now. I've been turning off the generator from midnight till 6AM to save my neighbors' nerves. The battery vortech system seems...
Hey, new website. Cool.
I made it through last week on vacation without any sort of problem. It all went fine and nothing was worse when I got back. In fact, my seahorses had their first batch of fry, which was very neat!
Sunday night, however, I noticed a drip from the return line. I cleaned...
I can't find anyone who sells replacement E-ballast comnponents. It looks like I'm going to have to buy 2 new ballasts, or disble one of the ones in the housing and buy one. I checked hellolights, champion, premium aqutics, etc.
So far...
Swapped in my emergency 400W ballast. Doesn't seem as bright as the old one, but still good. Need to get a raw e-ballast and fix my original setup.
50G water change.
Changed the GFO reactors. They were fused solid, and there was a lot of calcium deposited in the sponges and inside...
Bax that sounds great.
In the light of day, I realized I have an old-time coil and core 400W ballast Dr. Radiata threw my way. So I can get that going later on today and have a fully-lighted reef. It even has a male 110V plug wired in for the light connection (like mine).
My problem these days...
I haven't had a real everything-dead tank crash, I feel it breathing down my neck. I hadn't planned for an expensive equipment failure at this juncture. Things fall apart; the center cannot hold. The falcon cannot hear the falconer.
