I had a bunch of other stuff planned --- and then half my dual 400W MH ballast farted out! It's putting out as much light as a 60W bulb on that side. Don't know what to do -- fix the burned out side or replace the whole thing? I can fall back to my old 250W ballast pretty easy. I have to pick a...
I have some real weirdness going on in my reef. Outside of the aforementioned siphon kookiness, my tank is changing. The weird sponge that used to grow in the pipes and periodically blast into the tank is gone. There's a furry material growing on the back wall. I don't think it's algae. I'm...
I plannt stuff for them too. I always grwo cigar plant (Cuphea ignea) and I'm growing an odd perennial called Crocacia. I let the milkweed run wild, they like that, along with some blue sage. I have even considered letting Japanes Honeysuckle into my yard, but so far have resisted the temptation.
The hummingbirds are off the nest now. You are seeing both females and juveniles of both sexes, they don't get the red until after the first molt.
Good year for the hummers so far, most in the last 3 years!
My reef has suffered a bit lately. I changed my lights without sufficient acclimation and ended up hurting a lot of corals, killing some outright. I have some sweet stuff I have to sell anyway.
My beautiful green "Kedd's Table" died back. I saved a bunch of frags and they are doing very well...
Sequence pump people say not to use tape, it won't work to connect to their pumps. Remember these products need to be safe for drinking water. They are not toxic. I originally used Hercules Sta-Tuf, but I had trouble getting a leak-proof seal. Now I use Hercules Pro-Dope, which works much better...
Working great again now. ???
One of the suckiest things about NJR's website fiasco is I don't have exact dates for my various purchases and other events, since I no longer keep a logbook. I haven't lost a fish in a long time (have lost some corals) :-( Both the angels are doing great. All of my...
Listen it might come to that. The siphon is still backing up periodically. It's driving me nuts! My new theory is that there's an air leak in the siphon line and a bubble is forming in the pipe, aided by the rough interior of the pipe. When I block the siphon and then restart it, it goes back to...
Thanks all. I think a miracle happened! I was messing with the inlet in the overflow, stopping and starting the siphon with my hand, and suddenly it was back to normal again. Maybe I sent a big pressure wave that knocked something out of the elbow or something. Or the stuff I loosened came out...
The problem of course is that the pipe comes from behind the wall to the back of the tank. Not much room to work back there. The good thing is that I did put some unions between the pipe (with the 90 deg elbow) and the tank. And there are unions on the other side of the wall. It's quite possible...
My WORST problem is that my drains are clogging up. Water is backing up in the tank, filling my coast-to-coast overflow. I've had to throttle back the pump to get any overflow at all.
Yesterday, on the heels of a successful pump replacement, I disassembled my drains at the sump end and tried to...
Nope, no run dry. And this is the second time it's failed, and my fourth Dart failure overall.
I don't know, is it too much head pressure? It's pushing plenty of water, the intake is not restricted (2" bulkhead). They start to leak at the seal.
Bax -- Thanks, I already bought my third Dart! I...
Ugh. My high-class sequece SUPER DART GOLD pump failed after only 2.5 years. Started making noise, now it won't start up. Tried my spare dart pump -- also seized up. Headed to my local LFS where he has kept one in stock for me. Not much fun replaceing the little SOBs either.
Oh MY GOD. A whole year of posts down the crapper...my seahorse thread, gone...still, it looks like some of my long-dead corals are back!
EXCELSIOR! PRESS ON REGARDLESS!
