    Cleaning Sand... Your Opinion

I don't clean my sand bed. But Ethan at AO, who helps us with maintaining our tank, does. The amount of nastyness that comes out of the sand bed is impressive. The water in the bucket is a nice yucky toffee color when he is done. He uses a vacuum syphon. Our sand bed is shallow in some...

    Buyer beware!!!!!!!

I like trop. I have better long term survival rates from Trop than from any other LFS or online retailer I use. If I have a sick fish, I know that they will take the time to talk to me and try to help me get it healthy again. To me, that is worth a lot. I can't even begin to count the...

Trying to pull off a move - am I insane?

I've had a few encounters with Bristle Worms. Is it fun? Not really. Any serious damage? Nope. You can of course avoid this problem by using a pair of tongs or wearing gloves. As for sand, I like the CaribSea Arag Alive Fiji Pink...

Trying to pull off a move - am I insane?

My personal opinion is that live sand is worth it. By using live sand, you reduce the risk of a cycle from sand in my opinion, which would enable you to get the tank up and running in the new house faster. I have never gotten anything nasty from it, and I've moved tanks way too many times (2x...

Trying to pull off a move - am I insane?

OK, one reply at a time. When I say skip the sand, I am saying skip the used sand from the old system. Not because you want to go sand-free, but because even when the system is newer, moving a sand bed, in whole or in part, stirrs up a ton of really nasty stuff that you don't want to release...

Trying to pull off a move - am I insane?

I would bet that your 10 could run for a couple of weeks. The 34 I would be concerned about from an aggression standpoint; the tangs and the maroon could get into an all out war in that small of a space for long. If you are thinking of breaking the DT down weeks ahead of time, in my honest...

    JBJ 3gal pico

Sounds like all is moving along nicely. Sexy shirmp, bumblebee shrimp, or anenome shrimp would be great in that size tank. a little gobie like a yasha (if you cover the tank), a cleaner, a red headed, or a green banded would be great also.

    JBJ 3gal pico

Nice setup! I love pico tanks, good luck with it! Will it house any fish, or will it be an invert only system?

You can also think about pricing out a new 75g. I would call tropaquarium personally, they have great tank specials. if you do buy a used tank and stand, check them very carefully to make sure they are not damaged.

    Nano skimmers

I'm with Paul. I have run 20g tanks in the past, and I had the best luck with a HOB skimmer. We used the Aqua-C Remora. We run our 12g without a simmer, but that is because we can't find a good one that will fit inside of the 12g JBJ.

    Tiny fish with inverts

So one of the most important things to keep in mind with small gobies is that they need small food. We use Rod's food, it has small pieces. We also feed arctipods, and we have a pod culture running. A lot of small gobies will feed on the microfauna in your tank as well. I have had trouble...

    Tiny fish with inverts

Cleaner gobies are good, and I hate to be the one to say this but look for Sustainable Aquatics. The ORA ones I have seen recently have been a bit funky looking. Also, if you do more than one make sure you are getting a true pair or they can fight. Maybe try a (blue neon) cleaner, a sharknose...

    Tiny fish with inverts

I lost two panda gobies to a fire shrimp. I have also lost small gobies (under 2") to crabs, emerald, halloween hermit, mexican red tip hermit, and a nasty hitchhiker. I lost a fire fish to a pistol shrimp (a live rock hitchiker, not one paired with a goby), and I lost a fire fish to a mantis...

    Ich in my reef

+1. I hate to be the one to tell you this, but if the PB has ich now, I would rip the tank apart and get him out. It should not take you more than about 30 min to remove the rock into buckets/brutes etc., syphon off water to keep them wet, and once the tank is rock-free you should be able to...

    Mandarin Success?

Culturing pods is pretty easy. Get yourself a glass container. Pour in 1/2 bottle of tigger pods. Add 1 cup tank water, and a couple of pellets or a small pinch of flake. Put it on your window sill. Wait 2-3 weeks. It will turn green. Every week to two weeks, harvest pods, and top the...

    Red Sea Max 130.

If you need help calibrating the refractometer, let us know. They are pretty easy to calibrate with calibration solution. I am not the best at IDing anthias, and your photos are out of focus which does not help, but they look to me like they could be bartlets...

    Red Sea Max 130.

You might want to invest in a refractometer. Swing arm hydrometers can be inaccurate if air bubbles are on the arm. If you SG is not where it should be, you will get very strange test results- I know this from experience. What kind of anthias did you get? We all get tricked from time to...

    Red Sea Max 130.

So looking at your livestock fish, there are a couple of things right away that I would be concerned about. 1. Most anthias need larger tanks. You can keep a single sunburst in a 40g-ish tank, but most of them require more swimming room. You may have trouble with your pair. 2. Mandarines...
