30 Gallon Adventure: R

My water quality is up to par. I just added my 10 g mix of the Seachem sea salt this morning, so i figured to let things settle then I can test tomorrow. Its not like Im itching to place an order right now. Im just looking, thats all. I know it seems like I dont know what Im doing and alot of people have just stopped posting because there disgusted with the way I do things. Its there decision, I'm learning as I go with a small system and I will continue to do so.

I am glad you are learning as you go, that's what the hobby is all about. But whether you add a fish tomorrow or 6 months from doesn't matter. As long as you have that many fish in your tank you are pretty much stocked. The usual stocking density is 1 inch of adult sized fish per 5 gallons. Besides the higher you fish bio-load the more difficult it is going to be to keep corals.

Ryan, I seriously doubt anyone is disgusted with you. Believe me, if I were to tell everyone how I ran my 58 gallon way back when in Oklahoma, my very first attempt at a saltwater tank, and what all I had in there, I'd be looked at funny (to say the least).

We all learn our lessons, and remember what fiasco I only recently had in my 180, with the major ich outbreak, right? :-[ No hard feelings, not here anyway. :)

We're all here to help ya, and we mean well - no harm intended, and I'm sure none of us want to intentionally hurt your feelings.

So.............on to more fun subjects now.

I would like to say that you've been incredibly patient by waiting and making sure everything is dandy before you are adding any corals. :)

More pictures would be great. ;D

Thanks Wendy, I know how delicate these corals are and I want to do everything right, the first time! :) Anyway yeah ill post more pics if ya want with my test results tomorrow night. Again thanks for the support, I do currently have 2 clowns, 1 sapphire damsel, 1 rusty angel and 1 six-line. So thats 5 and I think I'll stop for now and really focus on getting the water quality as perfect as can be.

research or consequenses is the name of the game in this hobby... i'm only in it for 3 years, but have learned alot in this time, some people have tanks large enough to "chance" things, but in a thirty gallon tank you really should go by what others here might suggest as far as stocking levels and fish combos.... you really do have less room for error.... and most fish aren't CB. so when you chance something and it dies, it came from the wild to teach that lesson.... just try your best to remember the lessons learned

Great idea Ryan. I think what you have should suit you well. Use credit for something that doesn't increase you bio-load. Wendy made some great points.
We have all done some knucklehead things. You have been incredibly patient with waiting for corals you should get props for that.

Pictures are always appreciated.

Sounds like you are following the advice Matt and Wendy have given you so good job. :)

I post this morning frustrated. I went to test my calcium, I added 40 drops, water didnt change one bit. After I mixed the Seachem reef salt in there I was thinking the calcium would show up in some form, but it is non existent. If you multiple 40x15 that is 600!! I'm not even getting a reading. Either it is RIDICULOUSLY high, or I have no calcium. What do I do at this point? I dont know whether to add supplements to boost it, or to add supplements to decrease it. Any help?

If it isn't changing that means your calcium is high. Try testing a batch of newly made water before you add it to the tank. Also take a water sample to your LFS and have them test it. With a calcium reading over 600 you would have it precipitating out of the water. I'm betting it was either a testing error or a bad test kit.

I dont like this test kit, it never worked really. I think I might get the reef test kit from api. The regular saltwater one works good for me.

Some of my favorite highlights!

I know and realize that the comparison from FW to SW is totally different. I got all smaller fish and I think they will be fine. I didn't just go and order fish for the hell of it.

I know that I'm still a rookie and alot of experienced reefers will look at my decisions and think I'm stupid, but every decision I make is calculated and I'm not afraid to take a chance or make a mistake. Because I know that I don't have a MAJOR system so thats why I can take a few more chances. I do alot of reading and researching on the internet and look at other boards to get info.

I know and I value and appreciate everyones help. I'm sorry if I might not respond but I do read everyone's advice and take it into account and then make the best decision possible for the tank.

Got them from Dr. Foster and Smith online. They were shipped in the same bag, one just chases the other one occasionally. Thanks for the positive feedback guys, jese! Merry Christmas to all of you as well. I was really excited to show everyone my new guys, I was hoping for once I did something right.

One of my other Wrasses did kill the other one, I got credit on the one fish though so its good, and I learned a lesson.

Yeah, but the poor wrasse is dead. ::)

Ryan, I seriously doubt anyone is disgusted with you.

::)

And a quote from Albert Einstein: "Insanity: doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results."

Of course I could fill 3 pages of "My parameters are good" / "My test is off the charts" type of quotes.

I commend all the very patient reefers on their positive support of Ryan, and I hope he will eventually be successful; but I am compelled to point out that this thread has run for four months and Ryan still hasn't learned to slow down and really listen.

This is the quote that really frosts me:

but every decision I make is calculated and I'm not afraid to take a chance or make a mistake. Because I know that I don't have a MAJOR system so thats why I can take a few more chances.

Just because your system is small and you can only kill a few animals at any given time doesn't mean you can be careless in the choices you make.

A good New Year's resolution for you would be to post what you intend to do before you do it, listen to the responses you receive, and then actually incorporate what you learn into your decision making.

I know you will be angry when you read this post, as some others may be. Before anyone responds, read it a few times; reread this entire thread a few times, and then react.

My intention is to give some firm, clear direction to a new reefer who is making more mistakes than he needs to.

Happy New Year to all!

You know something, I wasn't here to start any trouble or anything, but then you have to make a sarcastic post like that. Dude, back off a little bit. I LISTEN TO WHAT EVERYONE SAYS!!! I don't know how many times I can say it. The first time I've been commended on being patient you have to go and ruin it. What have I done that I'm going sooo fast???! I haven't added corals or any other fish! I learn from my mistakes and I'm sure you killed a few animals in your day and learned a lesson. I killed one Wrasse for Christ sake, and you have to go and prosecute me for something every reefer has probably done!! I just don't understand why your saying that I'm "Insane" or whatever because I am never endangered the lives of my fish or inverts. So I mean I don't understand why you couldn't have just have put up a suggestion if you wanted to post on my thread so bad. OR you could've just said nothing at all. Read the first page of this thread, I've learned and grown a lot from the guy who just wanted to start a saltwater aquarium. So again, please clarify what you mean about me "moving to fast and not listening" If I didn't listen I just would've put some soft corals in and they would've died and killed off my fish. When I say calculated risk that is based on information from here and the private research that I do on my own. Such as you may ask, well such as the internet and information from books and magazines. I got the magazine from Dr. Foster/Smith in the mail and I read it. Let me ask a question, Who HONESTLY does EVERY SINGLE THING by the books? No one really does because information in books doesn't apply to everyone. Different things work for different reefers. If you have such a problem with me then just don't post anymore here. I'm not hurting anything and I am certainly not moving to fast. I'd like to end with if I were the others that complimented me on moving at a slow but good pace, I would be insulted by such an idiotic post like this.

First did you rerun the test?

Second the quotes Bill pulled, he pulled for a reason. As one of the more experienced reefers and certainly one that I respect I believe he has the right and was right. You are too impulsive at times, and we all hate to see poor animals die because we make avoidable mistakes. The sixline being an example Ryan, if you had asked for imput before buying two 6 lines, someone would have chimed in. I have asked myself if you are really listening sometimes. Reread what YOU wrote and ask yourself was that the right way. We are here to help you Ryan. I don't know maybe I am old school. Given all that you have improved which Wendy and I both remarked about. Try to keep going in the right direction.

i've met bill once, and have read many of his posts, and have seen the photos of his tanks, he and many of the other veterans on this site are a "book" as far as i'm concerned. even more so cause they're not reading other people's research to base their opinions on, they have done this research themselves, some of them for 20, 30 years or more. they do practice what they preach... i have learned SOOOOOO much from the very nice and informed people in this club, i've had my 75g reef established for 3 years and still consider myself a newbie.... and remember that people don't get frustrated when they don't care.

Hey its fine that everyone defended him. I don't really want to comment on the situation because I know I'll say things that will get me kicked off of here. You know I'm at my wits end because it doesn't matter what I do because on here, I'm always wrong. I guess that I'll keep my info to a minimum because god knows my quotes will be thrown in my face somehow someway. Excuse me for wanting to do things the way I would like to have them. And again, I just don't think its classy that everyone still keeps talking about the six line. I didn't do it on purpose and they didn't have a clear warning, one that was on the bottom of the page. I said it was a mistake so I'd appreciate it if you guys would just let this whole thing go. Thanks and Happy New Year!

Been doing water changes with the reef salt and getting better n better results. I at least want to give it to mid February to see where my test results are my then. I mean I got that other Reef test kit from API and so far have only tested for calcium because honestly it was my first concern but now I can really focus on everything. I really was so confused on where my calcium was that I just had to get peace of mind about it. Like I said I'll really be buckling down and keep the water quality at 100%

Well you could order one new for about 140 during our next PA group buy or just buy a new collection cup for about 30 bucks. I don't know anything about this skimmer though it looks like good ratings overall.

$140 new or $110 used for 3 months sonds comparable. as far as the crack on the cup, there is no pressure there, so glued should be fixed..... if you don't want to wait for the next group buy, i'd grab that one on rc

i just bought my aquac w/mag3 pump recently from a member on here for 90$. another member was selling for 100. just post in f/s as you mentioned and sure you can find someone selling it for cheap.
