30 Gallon Adventure: R

So anyways,

My skimmer actually broke last night, well the needle wheel injector part at least. So obviously the whole thing is useless. Makes it even more of a reason for the AquaC to come my way!!

 Darn, Ryan. So sorry to hear about that. That sucks in all honesty!

Did you find one yet/order one yet? What are you gonna do about skimming for the time being or filtering?

Well I have a smaller filter I could hook up for the mean time. But that Rio was really cheap, I just toke the intake tube out to do my routine cleaning and I went to connect it back into the needle wheel and the thing just broke. So I mean Im trying to negotiate with folks about acquiring one but if I don't get a final decision made by tomorrow night then I'm going to just order one. Which pump should I look for anyways? Alot of them come with the MJ 1200.

Hey Ryan why don't you post some pics of your tank and show us what broke. Perhaps it can be fixed or the part replaced until you decide to upgrade. As I told you during our group buys you will be able to buy the skimmer cheaper then any other way(new at least).

You also have not had the Rio Skimmer that long maybe you can try to email Rio and tell them and they will send you a replacement part free. Always try to email the company..the cost for them to send you a tiny part is worth more then cost of you complaining to all your friends. It is worth a shot and the 5 minutes it takes you to google and send the email to Rio.

Thanks for idea, but the whole skimmer was really poorly made. My intake tube I didn't even notice cracked when I tried to put the needle wheel back together. So I'm guessing it was just very crappy plastic? Anyway, I was talking to two folks who had the Remora and they were selling it for reasonable prices. One guy didn't have the filter box that is important for the skimmate on top of the water, and Candi was in the process of repairing hers and I just didn't want to wait to much longer. So I just threw a new skimmer and skimmer box on my Mastercard and called it a day. At least this way I'm getting something new and I wouldn't have to worry about the stability of the skimmer. Not that I don't trust people, I just prefer to go new when I want to buy something usually. Anyway, I am hoping I'll get it by Thursday-Friday. So I went to go use the test kit from API to go test the calcium, and I didn't get a reading again. Its wierd guys, when I dump a little water out of the tube, I get a reading. However when I fill the water up to the line they request me to, I don't get anything. Very odd. I have been doing regular 3.5 g water changes with my SeaChem Reef Salt. I was thinking about taking my water to get tested so I can know for sure whats going on.

I don't blame you for getting something new. I feel that way sometimes too. If something is discounted enough then I can see buying used but if not then I would rather have new.

About your test kit maybe something contaminated or diluted one of the reagents? Why don't you take a sample of your water to Trop since that is where you shop the most. They will test it for you.

Hopefully skimmer will be here tomorrow ::) And I plan to go to A.R.M. thursday to get my water test and I also plan to go up to Ocean Gallery II the same day. I've been reading alot about the vendors and sponsors and figured I should finally take advantage of being a member of NJR and going out to get some info and gain knowledge from the experts. Tropi honestly isn't exactly helpful sometimes. There usually isn't anyone around when I go there anyway and then most of the times they are all together near the one register talking about something. So I figured I'd try somewhere else, I hate sticking to one place. Hopefully I'll be posting pics tomorrow night :)

No skimmer yet, unless it comes later this evening. But anyway, I do plan on going up to Ocean Gallery II tomorrow afternoon after a few games of bowling and Brian emailed me back say it would be no problem testing the water and is looking forward to meeting me so I'm excited for that. Anyways, I'll give an update tomorrow, for now I'm just running my MarineLand Power Filter.

Two test results I got tonight
KH- 8
Rates- Between 20-40
SG- 1.026
Temp is cureenty 80.4
Phos.- 0.25-0.5

Not to bad I guess, I can't get a reading for that calcium though its the wierdest thing. Oh well I'll finally know everything tomorrow from Brian. I'll post tomorrow night!

Full tank pic, I think I've come along way.

Looks good ... inverts are this month too. Should be some some things you can pick up. They are a few corals too I think. Maybe it is "time"? Saw skimmer this week pretty good sized huh?

Yeah maybe I think I can put some easier beginner corals in there. I mean I think I've been patient enough. JR I can get the iverts/corals on here? And if so could you tell me where I can buy them on here lol. Thanks for the great comments from both JR and Wendy, Really appreciate the support :)

Sounds good, you said inverts/corals? I def. want just maybe 2 frags of softies. I could really use some more turbo snails as well. I just don't know where to look at what I can buy and where to submit it lol I've never done a group buy!

Well I will walk you though any particulars ... Phil is going to post at the end of the week all the details.(be patient)
I will send you a PM with some other details so if you need help I will do my best.

Doing some research here and finding that the Toadstool leather sounds good so far. I found that alot of reefers have trouble with polyps. Mainly because of how quickly they spread. I also found that I like the Button Polyps, they seem to not need to much. I have 2 Korolla Powerheads so I should have plenty of flow for a 30 gallon. Remember I am using the 4X24 T-5's. Which has really served me well so far. I mean just look at how the rocks changed. Also I have the rocks stack high and tight so I'm not worried about the corals not getting enough light. My lighting cycle has been, 12-4 then about 6-10. Anyways thats it for now.

Your light should be pretty good...the corals that need more light can go up higher as you said. I don't exactly understand what you mean about your light cycle. Your lights don't go off for two hour right...do you mean the different type of bulbs? Leathers are nice...Candi is selling very nice green ones if she has any left. GSP Green Star Polys do grow like weeds. You have great flow so your fine. Be careful that you don't actually have too much flow. For instance Frogspawn or Hammer corals don't want a lot of direct flow it will hurt the flesh actually. SPS needs a lot more. A suggestion you could aim the two powerheads at each other it will create a more turbulant flow.
