30 Gallon Adventure: R

Yeah I never thought of that. I just have them on opposite sides of the tank. One aimed towards the top and one towards the middle. I have contacted candi through PM, email, and posted on the board shes selling on. I want to make sure I get that coral.

Firefish :)

Got me a firefish today up at Trop. I couldn't resist it. I got a little bit more of rock as well. Just like 3 smaller pieces just to fill in spots. So anyway the fish is doing good so far. He should be alright with the two clowns, damsel, and Six-line. Noone has really made moves toward him but I'll continue to monitor it. I wanted to know if I should construct something to keep him from jumping out of the tank. 2 days til my first coral!

You'll love your firefish, Ryan. I've had one since May or June of 07, and he's doing great. Mine never tried to jump. They will dart into a hiding place though when they feel threatened. The do it SO fast that your head will spin (hence the other name "dartfish")

Please post pics tomorrow when you get your pretty Toadstool, ok?

Mine went carpet surfing ... pretty crispy by the time I found him. All fish can jump those do tend to jump more ... a risk. If you can keep him calm then should be OK but you have a few semi agressive fish so my suggestion is to cover it up if you can.

They do hide as they are pretty skittish.....look around your tank.
I really love the fish but one mistake allowed per fish IMHO. I really like our open tank so no jumpers for me.

True true. I had to do my water change today and my nitrates have been about 20 ppm for awhile so I did a 5 gallon change instead of 3.5. Not to much more but maybe it will hopefully stop my algae growth. Did you see my question in G.D.?

Yeah I did find him this morning ;D So anyway I set my lighting schedule to Wendy's. She's such a big part in what I do, her and James have really helped me so much! So here it is

9 am- Blues ON
10:30 am - Daylights ON
6:30 pm- Daylights OFF
9 pm- Blues OFF

quit hogging them to yourself ryan - i could use their advice sometimes too! ;D

If you are really worried about jumping - you could construct a top with window screen/fishing wire.

I have an open top - but my firefish is out all the time and has not shown any signs of nervousness. I attribute this to: a bigger than usual specimen from AqOb and the complete lack of competitors/threats in the tank. I do agree though that some fish are pre-disposed to be excellent at carpet surfing. I know i'm rolling the dice here but *for me* it's been okay so far. Now if I went out and got a pseudo - it would be 2 minutes and the firefish would be on the floor.

Hahaha, I guess I could give them up occasionally ;)

Anyways, it is yet to be seen how he is going to behave being out on a steady basis. I mean he was out a few times today but "darted" right back into his hiding spot as soon as I turned around to look. If I measure the tank I'm pretty sure we have a spare screen hanging around somewhere in the garage. I just want to see whats going on with him first. Also on a retailer note, Tropi has I think the worst staff I have ever been around. They never want to help you and never even say hello or anything when you come in. I practically had to run someone down yesterday to get the stuff I need. Not trying to be rude or anything but I don't think it would be to much to say "Hey guys (I was with my girlfriend), how are you? If you need something just let me know." I mean c'mon now! In the age of where "Customer Hospitality" ALWAYS comes first, they really never show any interest in their customers. I don't expect someone to be asking me 15 times if I need help but I mean a little acknowledgment goes a long way with people. Just my personal opinion.

unfortunately even the best retailers will have bad days. While one hopes that at any given moment they will be ready to help - it's just not that easy. Do you live near there is that why you went? I like bringing my wife to Trop and point to the big display and say "Hey if you want that kind of fish - let me get a bigger tank". ;)

I'm not always there - once in a while I have a meeting in tinton falls of all places - and I make my way over.

Can't argue though the size of that place.

My first time at AqOb I was totally turned off (i expected a layout like trop). Of course since then they are my favorite place.

I say that to my "wife" all the time hahaha. I have been in there MANY times since I have started the hobby. I mean its the same routine every time. I go in and I walk around and walk around, noone ever goes out of their way to help. Their selection is amazing and the tanks are breathtaking. Service is sub-par most times. I remember when I first started on this site, I posted about Tropi. and someone said that they are very biased towards nano tanks. It certianly seems that way. For someone who goes in and doesn't spend thousands in one visit I think I give them pretty good business. But whatever, I think I am going to go see Brian this next week.

Well Hawk your firefish is the biggest guy in the tank. Though with the big tank my bicolor pseudo has calmed down I wouldn't exactly say he is Gandi ;). I cannot get rid of him though because he is the one fish that has lived though all the mistakes I made.

I have the same feeling about Trop though I usually get some response.

If you want some egg crate I have some in white if you want some. Unfortunately I am gone this weekend starting this afternoon.

I disagree with this completely. Brent and Austin are two of the best around in terms of customer service and knowledge of the trade. If you're browsing, Brent will always come over and at least once ask if you need any thing and the man is willing to talk for quite a bit of time (especially with how busy they are) to you if you need advice or have questions. Austin is the exact same way. He also builds tanks and posts on here quite often so I'm pretty sure he could take that one up if he wanted.

The staff at Trop are great. Maybe you go in on a bad day or something, but I never get less than a hello from a few people when I go in. That is a store where it's very easy to build a good relationship with the staff.

And keep in mind that I don't even BUY that much at Trop. I'm there normally to browse and hang out. I'll pick up some frags and such now and then (and I buy some pumps once in a blue moon), but I'm far from your big money customer who's dropping a few hundred dollars there a trip -- and there are quite a few people who do that at Trop.

Jonathan...FYI we flamed out another thread with this discussion. Some do and some get good service at Trop. Best to just let it drop.

First Coral

Is it completely normal for the fish/peppermint shrimp to nip at the new coral? Because thats what I'm getting now.
