30 Gallon Adventure: R

Wow really? Yeah I got my card a few weeks ago. Great so I'll use it tomorrow either way. If they didn't have my lights tomorrow, could I ask them to order them for me?

Anyways tomorrow I'll be looking for test kits for testing:
ALK
MAG
PHOS.

I don't see why not. They should be able to get them if they don't have them.

And yeah, they give you a 10% discount on all purchases. You show them your card once and they put it into the computer along with the expiration date and it's in there permanently.

Ok Great. Yeah like I said, I'll be sure to repost what happens tomorrow, I'm so happy! My first big step in establishing my first reef tank :)

Got My NEW LIGHTSSS!!!

Here are some pics!
Spent about a total of $321 lol, but its all gunna be worth it in the end. I'm going to set the timers tonight, so everything will be set :)

Test Kits, Paid alot but got about 60 tests with each I think.

PB060364.jpg

Timers and Exhaust fan :)

The actual light, it stands with the legs on the inside ledge of the tank

Hope everyone liked the pics, It sounds funny but it lights up my whole living room!! I love it though, and can't wait for those corals! I'll be testing stuff tonight and I'll post the results either tonight or tomorrow. Thanks for looking!

Yeah I used the card :) And yes Sundial T-5. I'm having a little bit of a hard time with the timers, I've never used something like that before. Like for example setting the current time on those timers, I mean I have it "set" but how it works, I don't honestly have a clue on what I'm doing with the timers.

It's probably military time, right?

Like, right now the time is, I believe, 18:16 via military time or something of the sorts.

Likely, you push down the notches on the side during the time you wanted it lit.

So if you wanted it lit from 10am until 8 or 9pm, you'd push in the notches from 1000-either 1900 or 2000.

Whoah - GREAT improvement, Ryan! I laughed out loud when you said you're illuminating your entire living room. Believe me, I can relate! I don't think you have any limits on what you can put where with those lights.

IF the timers are military time, then it goes like this:
1AM = 0100 hours
6AM = 0600 hours
10AM = 1000 hours
12PM = 1200 hours
3PM = 1500 hours
9PM = 2100 hours

I'm sure you can fill in the rest. ;) (Gosh, that just brought back some memories)

I'm glad for Ryan, too. That's a nice set-up he has now. The only thing I recommend is getting rid of that background and putting up a black one! Now that he'll be getting real coral in a few weeks, anyways! ;)

Thanks everyone! I'm currently testing my calcium so we'll see how that goes. Also I did remove that background awhile ago, now I want REAL corals :) I'll go back and read the info everyone gave me, honestly I don't know if its military time, it just has like 1 am and 1 pm on the timer then the numbers around it. Alright well my calcium is low, only at about 240. I'm going to test the ALK and MAG now.

I would start using a reef salt now that you're going to move onto coral in a few weeks. It will have higher calcium, higher trace elements, etc. You won't have to supplement as much also.

Something like Seachem Reef Salt or whatnot. Stay away from Reef Crystals, though, as I NEVER had good results with it. Every freaking pail was different.

Like you mean putting Reef Salt in? I have the Instant Ocean Salt I got when I first started. Also maybe one of you could help me out. My MAG reading was between 0,3-0,4 Like it was the mark right in the middle of those to. I didn't understand how to read the chart because it went by twos.

Anyways, I'm going out for the night so my final results were this. I'm still kinda confused on setting the timers, my Calcium was about 240, and the Mag I didn't know how to read, was between 0,3 and 0,4, the mark right in between those numbers. I'll check back maybe late tonight or tomorrow. I just hope I could get this resolved.

Reef salts are salt mixes specifically formulated for reef tanks. Like Instant Ocean Reef Crystals, Seachem's Reef Salt, etc etc. Red Sea makes a nice reef salt.

With corals, it's definitely a much better type of salt to use. I'd recommend using Seachem's Reef Salt mainly because the price is great and it's a damn quality product. Just pick up one of those HUGE buckets of it (costs like $40 for a huge bucket that does 150G of water or so).

Honestly, I'm not good with tests. Mainly because I don't test my water. At all! I wouldn't recommend that until you're truly comfortable not testing, but I'm sure someone around here can help with that.

Alright thanks. jonathan, do I add the reef salt in at a specific time or whats up with that? Hahaha, Also that tests I picked up are so complicated with all the stuff you gotta do. I know that my calcium is very low so I think I'll post for help with that here and now and then in the general discussions part. Also I couldn't really read the test of Magnesium so I need assistance with that as well. I didn't even test the Alkalinity yet lol. But yeah I'll be around all night if anyone can help me out, I'm also on AIM- Unc Unlimited 21

What he is saying is when you are doing your water changes you need to use salt fomulated for REEF tanks not just fish. The Reef mixes have more calcium and other minerals.

Instant Ocean and Reef Crystals are the same company I think just different mixes. Sort of like cheap gin and Bombay gin. ;)

You will need to supplement Ca..using a two part system will work well for that size tank.

Congratulations on the lights they look good.

If he's going to use a reef salt and keep softies for now, I wouldn't think he'd need to supplement anything as long as he does weekly 10% water changes. I mean, I run an LPS/SPS system and I never supplement calcium as my weekly water changes add all that I need.

Just a little update: My lovely and adoring girlfriend set the timers for me this afternoon, she figured out that the pegs around the timer actually moved back to set the actual time. Boy did I feel stupid lol. Anyway so the lights are set and my ALK was about 175. And the Mag. I found out today was about 1250. Anyway so everything is good and I still don't know what I'm going to do about the reef salt or someone suggested one big water change. I still have to research that. I'll do my water change monday hopefully and that will be it, I usually take out about 3.5 g.

If there's no livestock in the tank you can do a larger change. Again, if you want to get your numbers up you're going to have to use a "reef" salt. Red Sea Coral Pro, Tropic Marin, Reef Crystals, Seachem Reef...

Ryan a big water change is not going hurt anything. Early on I had a major Phos problem...I ended up doing 10G(out of 24) water changes a couple times to really bring it down. PLEASE pay attention to temp and PH so they match though.
And as Phyl said use a better reef salt I know Trop always says well you don't have corals so buy Instant Ocean.

Ok thanks guys. Like I said previously I did purchase a bag of instant ocean salt when I first started setting up the tank. Will this work? And I know it sounds stupid but the reef salt I put it with what? Do I like make my own mix now of the RO water and add the salt in and the directions on the salt say? I know I've asked this multiple times but I just really want to be sure. If my instant ocean salt doesn't work, then I'll gladly go get the suggested brands, well one of them anyway haha. Just want to be sure :)
