30 Gallon Adventure: R

Yes its a fish. Its a damsel, I picked up 3 from Trop. about a few or so ago. Im heading up there tomorrow for some more snails and some more mysis shrimp.

Well its the wierdest thing, I had 3 damsels for a few weeks, and now one is just plain GONE. I checked EVERYWHERE in the tank guys, no sign of him, checked around the tank to see if he had jumped out, I even moved the top layer of rocks around and there was no sign of him. So I'm out of ideas. Anyway, I have a little problem and could use some advice. I did another weekly water change, I usually try to do one at least once a week. Immediately after, I tested the water. Everything was perfect, the Ammonia was so low it came up like an off white. HOWEVER, once I test the Nitrates, they were OUTRAGOUS! Between 20-40. Not good! So should I maybe just let everything settle and take another test tomorrow or something? Or wait a day or two and if its still high do another water change? Keep in mind I take out about 3.5 G per week. And Replace it with the saltwater. And yes I ONLY top off with the RO water :) I've been a trooper with that :) I'm just concerned with the Rates. Also the Nitrites were perfect as well so I don't understand the spike.

Well I usually cut up a whole Mysis Shrimp cube and put like 2 little pieces on the top for the fish, and 1 piece in the sand for the starfish to come out and get and the other inverts usually come out to. And I'd like to reiterate that I did kinda reaquascape the top half of the rocks, and couldn't find the damsel, so I'm not going to take all the rocks out just to try and find a fish. I don't want to set my tank back into another cycle. But anyway, I think I'll cut back on the feeding for now at least.

Alright well I tested the Rates last night, and they were still about 20. Now that damsel fish didn't just jump out of the tank. Now what should I do now about this "missing" fish. I mean do I take everything out and reaquascape? Or just hope that the fish turns up or break down? I really hope to get corals in there def. by Thanksgiving, latest Christmas. I mean if I want to meet this goal, what should I do to start achieving it?

In an effort to get this thread back on track, I've removed the ruckus. Ryan has apologized for his assumptions and subsequent posts. Further questions will be asked in their own appropriate threads/forums. Thanks for your understanding.

Update: Water change was done today, Testing will be done tomorrow. By the end of November I should get my lights. What I'll do for Corals is well, I could ask again politely for Frags from here. I had looked at a Toadstool Leather, and something called a Devil's Hand I believe its called. I figured maybe to start with about 4 Frags? If no one here would sell them to me or whatever the case may be, I'll see what the web has to offer for Frags, and if not that then Trop or A.O. I'm sure would have some. Anyway thats just an update, Also I have replaced the filter pad in the skimmer finally, I ordered a 6 pack of them so I'll be good for awhile. If anyone wants to see pics let me know.

When you get your lights check with me.

I should have some easy things like hairy mushrooms and green star polyps to start with.

Alright, Ummm thats a little to far away from me, I mean last time I went up there it toke awhile. And so congested area. Thanks anyway.

Best to look for someone in your area. Most folks sell frags to club members for 5-10$ depending on the frag. You should offer to purchase them, not ask for freebies (and then add in the inconvenience of asking someone to ship). Try a WTB post in the FS/FT forum for this, making sure to list your location and how far you think you could travel.

I really didn't want to seem like I'm looking for a freebie. Thats a good idea for looking for someone in my area. I'll def. look into that. Thanks!

Ryan, it would really be helpful if we (I) knew where you lived. I do have some zoos I could frag and GIVE you a couple so you can see if they work for you. I'm in Howell. But please, before you venture into any corals, get test kits for dKh and Ca. SERA is pretty inexpensive - yet quite accurate.

Of Course Wendy, I want to prepare myself in the best way so I know what to do when the time comes. I'll pick up the test kit soon. Also I'm in Hazlet, NJ. We aren't to far apart I guess. And I insist that I pay for the frags. I never ever take a freebie, never have and never will. Its the least I could do for being so nasty. Just tell me how much you would like and it'll be a done deal. We can talk more about this when I get my first check and hopefully Trop. will have my lights. Cheapest around that I've seen 210.99

Ryan, I'm near Trop. I will probably frag my Tyree Sarcophyton coral soon. It's gorgeous and easy to take care of. After you get your lights and are ready for corals, I'll cut a small piece off for you for a few bucks.

check out our sponsor Icecap. im unsure what lights your looking for but you could get a retrokit t5 setup for about $200-300 and they are good lights IMO

Thanks for both answers. I appreciate it. I SHOULD be getting my lights by the end of this month hopefully, but yeah jonathan I'll def. let you know, and just give me a price for the frag and its a done deal. If anyone has got anything else let me know. I want to get some options now for myself so when I get my lights I can set the lights up and hopefully get the frags in the same day.
