I wouldn't suggest putting lights on your tank and frags in it at the same time. Once you put stronger lights on the tank you will nearly assuredly end up with an algae outbreak of one kind or another. That's just always the way. The increase in light causes the algae that you didn't realize was there to take off like a rocket. I'd wait a month or so.

Thanks for both answers. I appreciate it. I SHOULD be getting my lights by the end of this month hopefully, but yeah jonathan I'll def. let you know, and just give me a price for the frag and its a done deal. If anyone has got anything else let me know. I want to get some options now for myself so when I get my lights I can set the lights up and hopefully get the frags in the same day.

I would only ask for like $10 for a small frag. I will try and frag it soon so it has some grow-out time for you, too.

I agree with this. Always good to wait a bit, Ryan. You don't want to have a nice frag get overrun by nasty blue green algae and succumb from it. Wait at least a few weeks. :)

Ryan, I hope you don't mind, but I wanted to show you a picture of what Phyl is talking about:

Ok that sounds like a plan to me. I didn't realize that the algae would spread so fast. My next question is, How do I stop the outbreak of algae, or at least contain it?

phosphate reactor may help, using RODI water will definitely help, a quality skimmer OR frequent water changes (preferably both), a sump full of cheato and not a lot of fish in the tank.

So the water changes should come maybe twice in a week? Also Im going to buy a test kit tomorrow like Wendy suggested to start testing for dKh and Ca.

a water change once a week should be fine.

test kits for alk,cal and mag are all very important if you plan on keeping corals down the road.

LOL, JR.

Here's another. Sure brings back some horrid memories:

Ryan, don't panic if/when everything turns green on you. Feed as little as possible, do regular water changes just like you do now, decrease the lighting period, throw in some snails, and in time it'll go away again. :)

Strangely enough I never experienced it to that extent with my 180. ???

A good clean up crew, frequent water changes and keeping your feeding in line with what your skimmer can skim are good suggestions. Try to use RO/DI if possible and use a turkey baster or power head to blow off your rocks.

I think instead of spending about 35$ on the master test kit from api I think I'll just write down what I should be testing for and get separate test kits.

Alk, PH, Trates are a safe bet.

Ca & Mg if you care to keep corals. Price out the 5 along side the set. You may well be surprised to find that it is more economical to purchase the kit.

I have the test for Ph, Rites, Rates, Ammonia. So I figured that it would make sense to get separate tests for Alk, Cal, and Mag.

Who would carry those test kits? I really didn't want to go all the way to Trop. today. GOOD NEWS! I'm going tomorrow to get my lights!!! I'm in Hazlet so the closest places are Petland Discounts, Petsmart

Wow really? Yeah I got my card a few weeks ago. Great so I'll use it tomorrow either way. If they didn't have my lights tomorrow, could I ask them to order them for me?

Anyways tomorrow I'll be looking for test kits for testing:
ALK
MAG
PHOS.
