Dan's 150 Rebuild

Well I just started to remove some sand. Forgot how deep my sand bed was. This is probably going to take 5-10 water changes before its all out. I already like how it looks tho so that's good.

I am worried about my rockscape tho. I hope my rocks don't collapse from the removal of sand.

Here r some updated pics of how operation sand out is going... uploadfromtaptalk1410800428365.jpguploadfromtaptalk1410800435980.jpguploadfromtaptalk1410800445057.jpg

Almost had a collapse on the right side of the tank. Rocks shifted a little bit but I think its okay now. Had to rearrange the distribution of weight so hopefully it'll be good.

or the one and only crushed coral with underground reverse filter that PaulB uses. Since Paul is probably the only person to pull off his version stick with one of the other three.

Don't have one now (Don't have anything now) but I have pulled this off in the past! :)

Well the tank is almost empty. Few more fish and a bunch of corals left.

When it comes time to empty it, I was thinking. Would it be a bad idea to dump vinegar in the tank and let it run to do its thing? Or do u think it would smell too bad?

Anyone?

I've also been contemplating when the time comes to set back up going fish only for now. Were going to be moving in the next few years so it may make sense. Who knows, just another idea in my crazy never ending brain :)

personally i would cheap enough clean all components first in vinegar.Let each item soak a good day .Rinse off .run vinegar mix through tank clean every thing pumps power heads ext. anything that comes into contact to water .Plus probably can't hurt to run a mix of vinegar through whole tank, running through all the plumbing .Also i'd check plumbing try to clean out with a clean cloth..

Well I'm completely redoing the plumbing so I'm not worried about that but I mean my equipment. Should I add vinegar into my tank while its up and have it clean the powerheads and return pump?

That's gonna take A
LOT and I mean A LOT of vinegar of you decide to runs through as the tank is running. I don't think you would be able to get the concentration high enough to do any kind of real cleaning. I would just drain and clean it all separate.

Since it will be empty yo should definitely cook the rock (not on a stove cook) that will help with your phosphate issue

Agreed, or if you plan on being out long enough you could give it a bleach/water bath followed by a good rinse followed by a acid(vinegar or muriatic) bath followed once again by a good rinse then drying.

That's exactly what I'm doing now. Have it all sitting out back in a brute can full of bleach and water. I'll have it in there for awhile, then rinse and repeat.

As far as the vinegar thing. I was thinking the same thing, Ill probably just clean everything separately

After 24hrs it's probably not doing anything anymore. Rinse it now and switch it out. Same for vinegar. After 24hrs it's probably out of cleaning power.
