Dan's 150 Rebuild

I calibrate my refractometer / check to see if it's calibrated a few times a week. If you don't rinse it with RODI, it won't give you adequate readings. It's possible but that would mean your salinity is off. The orange box @ 1.026 gives you ca 490, alk 13dkh, 1440 mag.

My latest batch of rc tested 13 alk, 540 calcium, and 1480 mag. So your levels are from the water changes, but none of your levels are dangerous.

540 is very high and its why I will be changing salt. I am actually changing due to the high alk because I like to keep it at 8. From everything I have read a calcium level that high will not hurt anything.

540 isn't high? When will it become a precipitate?

Too many factors impact precipitation.....temperature, magnesium level, alkalinity, etc. Because of all the factors, you can't simply state precipitation of calcium carbonate will occur at a certain ppm.

This is the reason I switched to IO. Also finding out that Dr. Holmes-Farley also uses IO made the decision simple. Since I'm a two-part doser, there was no need for all that additional alk, calc and mag. My tank is more stable with using IO....the same amount of alk and calc as the ocean!

Is 0.01/0.02ppm bad from the rodi machine? I just realized I probably need new filters(of course after I already placed an order with BRS. Lol

Your TDS meter reads to the hundredth position? Mine only reads to the ones position, so when I see a one, I know it's time to change the DI resin.

Just got my filter socks in, woohoo! Time to make this water a lot more clear. So I've read that you should wash em before putting into the tank, I just threw all 4 socks in the washer with just water. Anything I should take precaution on?

And should I throw em in the dryer afterward??

I sun dry mine. Doesn't take too long. I'd worry about residue dryer chemicals.

Dan I have been washing my socks the same way for the last 5 years
They go into the washer I splash a very small amount of bleach spin dry and done
No need to dry it's going right into water anyway
