Dave’s 90g learning-curve glass room experiment

Guess the zoa knew we were talking about it - found it back on the sand bed last night - the glue was still on the bottom - separated from the rock. It will be dipped and glued back on - more to come

I had some zoos that looked just like that when I got them in the mail. It took them about 3 weeks to open. I had to tuck them in a dark cave with low flow before they decided it was safe to open again. Good luck, I hope they make it!

I did not read about your tank the first time, but I agree with most that room rocks and that has to be one of the best home made sumps Ive seen

Thanks and thanks....

I have a question dave - what is that avatar????

Sorry, It's intentionally vague… It’s album cover art from Meddle – a Pink Floyd album (Fat Old Sun’s a song off Atom Heart Mother – but that album has a cow on the cover – thought the Meddle cover fit better with the reefer theme(and not that kind of reefer since I know that’s what anyone who doesn’t listen to floyd is thinking :) )

Onto tank news, then there was two – the nem split and as my wife had eagerly anticipated, it walked away from itself. The split could be a bad sign but since it was 80%+ when I added it in, I was not surprised and I’m cautiously optimistic (second time I said that in like 20 minutes…) that it’s happy. I just hope at least one of the comes out of hiding from behind the rock-work. They’re too cool to look at to be hidden in the back

LOL.... i am woefully uneducated when it comes to pink floyd. I do recall this album cover my bro had in vinyl:

Yeah, I’ve been sort of a devotee since I was a kid and ironically my older brother (who IMO bore responsibility to have introduced me to that stuff, but failed woefully) recently asked me to burn him a greatest hits of sorts so he could see what he was missing. I guess I’m at fault too b/c I just remembered that now and truth is, it wasn’t so recent, like maybe 3 years ago… oops

Anyway, I’m not sure how long the pic will last – after seeing yours it reminds me of a pic I have of my girls at the camden aquarium

and I love an opportunity to show off my kids even if the pics are almost 2 years old – at least it implies I’m capable of caring for humans which I might question if the hobby was a prerequisite of some sort.

Aw they are cute! the aquarium is nice/fun. I wish we lived closer to go more. However my main gripe about it is that the main entrance is a HIKE and a half from the parking lot. Whoever thought up that idea never walked in the rain with little kids before.

As for the aquraium, you need to get there right before they open - I guess that's hard if you're far away. - I know getting out of the house with kids always takes longer than it should. Anyway if you are there early you can park in the surface lot right by the entrance and there's no wait for tix. I've done it twice now - just walked in and by the time we left the line to get in was ABSURD.

Here's another tip... buy the tickets online before you go. Then pick them up at the will-call booth. That line is always very short while the other fools stand in the line that trails down to the parking lot.

We're members. Call me crazy but my kids drive me nuts and if my wife can get them out and down there a couple times a year - super. Heck the membership pays for itself in like 3 trips.

Anyways - the parking is either the old covered lot (very far) or the uncovered one that is across from the circle. I'm not sure I know of a "surface" lot right next to the booths. The booths are right at that circle right?

All i am saying is that its sorta crazy that the entrance is all the way on the riverfront instead of say - right by the "circle".

Same lot -across the St and the far side if the bldg (RCA bldg side) but still closer than the garage which is more for the E-center (or what ever they're calling it now) and the battleship. Membership is a good call. My folks keep asking for gift ideas for the holidays. I think the family membership is making the cut this yr. You must have a secret exit if it pays for itself tho b/c I can never get out with out the cash sucking trip through the gift shop. My kids are 4.5. Never get out without at least 1 stuffed friend each. They tried to put "Nemo" in the tank last time. Sweet gesture on their part but...

ok we're talking the same then. I just don't get the lots being so far away compared to say when you drive to the Mall, or a big box store like walmart/target etc.

Look at the Liberty Science center - besides the handicapped spots, the regular spots are just a little bit further away from nice cool airconditioning/climate control. Adventure Aquarium? walk along the river and pray it's not windy/rainy. nice real nice.

As for the gift shop - i think when you go more often it's easier to control. Mine are 9 and 5 so maybe that helps more. One time my daughter wanted to buy the toy gun because that was what my nephew had. I just flat out said no. I mean that thing was loud and going to drive me crazy in the car ride home. I laughed at my brother though because he moaned about his son using the gun all during the drive back.

Haha, yea, they conveniently put the gift shop at the end of the Shark exhibit. They know everyone is going to go through there and that's the only way out unless you back track. So they force you into the gift shop and then kids take over from there!

Next time, try to talk them into the souvenir penny's instead of the stuffed animals... they're much cheaper. ;)

I agree the membership is a good deal, especially if you have younger kids that like to go often.

The zoa seems much improved. Guess the dip in coralRx worked well

And the clown is happy with her choice of two nems. She's got me beat to a primary AND secondary residence. This is the daytime spot

Newest additions. I picked up a 33 long from a local reefer which I will use as my new QT setup - 1 step closer to adopting a group of fish (hoping they are still available since the week and a certain storm have passed in the interim. anyway, when I picked up the QT tank, I was offered a couple frags - I mean what a deal, less than $1/gallon for the QT and some frags to boot. They haven't opened yet so pics aren't really an option but here's what I have: Green Metallic Palys, green apple zoas and whammin watermelon zoas. As of last night the zoas looked the same so I'm not sure if I have the watermelons or two of the green apples, but closed they may look the same - I hope the plugs hold - the superglue didn't seem as secure as I hoped and the flow I have from the cheap PHs I have is a bit too strong. After all the praise on the MP40s with the battery backup after the storm they just moved up on the xmas list - getting one is now neck and neck with LEDs (and an iPad - although I think this addiction, eh-hem.... hobby will bump that to 3rd or 4th before I even make it to Halloween

oh, just to back up, one weird thing - my CUC seems really attracted to them - I did dip them in coralRx but otherwise I'm not sure why they are being treated like the local buffet to the CUC....

Looking good Dave. Those should add some nice color to your tank.

Speaking of color, did the zoas I gave you ever regain any color after you dipped them? That pic looked like they were recovering and opening, but the colors were sort of blah.

Are they the Blue Leg Hermits that are picking at them? Mine do the same thing. I put in a frag from the QT and they are on it in a blink. They take about 20 minutes to clean every speck of algae from it then it's back to business as usual.
