What a great day! Phyl and I really enjoyed diving again - It's been way too long. Eric says that he goes just about every weekend so we need to setup another trip.
Major thanks to Mike for hooking me up with one of the slurp guns. It worked really well for sucking up a little butterfly. Also huge thanks for Deb, et al, for keeping an eye on the kids while we were out. That was great of you!
And as always, it was cool putting faces to screen names and seeing all the rest of you again.
Oh yeah, the eel is loving life with those live ghost shrimp! Him and the dragon wrasse were plucking them off as soon as they entered the water. The eel had a bit of tougher time because of his poor eye sight, but he figured it out!
Great Day everyone, always good to see everyone. Diving was fun, although a bit different than
what I'm used to. Another few dives in that muck and think I may learn to love it!
Thanks Matt, Mike and Rob for lending me weight (sorry for losing yours Phyl and John! :-[ )... Next time I'll be sure to not except everyone's weights before testing it out first! Nothing like sinking right in to a Jersey Blue Crab that's waiting for me with open arms!!
Pictures are great Eric! Thanks for taking and for posting them! Very cool. As John said we had a great time and are looking forward to getting out and doing it again!
Yep, nice time diving with you all, now I can say I've dove NJ waters.
Next time I'll be packing a slurpgun, spear and collection bag I saw 2 flounder large enough to make some good eats.
Do people collect and eat some of the larger crabs out there? They taste any good? They're definately fiesty buggers!
I'm up for the next trip.

I caught a couple of the crabs. Brought back 2 but it wasn't enough to call dinner so we sent them back to the sea (eggs in tow). I could have caught more. Getting them in the bag is challenging though!
Greg, thanks for bringing the net and showing us how to use it! You know the saying... if you teach a man to fish... Well, when we got back tho LBI we found an old and slightly holey net and took it out to the bay in low tide. It was about 10ft or so. We were right by the bulkhead so there was no shallow area to drag it to so we just kinda winged it. We did 7 or so passes. I couldn't believe what we caught! First pass was a tiny fish that looked like a tadpole, and a tiny crab, so I wasn't expecting much. Next pass was a couple of small crabs and ghost shrimp, third pass was 2 pipefish, fourth was a flounder almost the size of a sheet of paper! Fifth and sixth was more crabs, ghost shrimp and 2 more pipefish, last pass was an EEL! I don't know what kind of eel, but my inlaws took some photos. So Greg, thanks for feeding us for a lifetime!
It was great to put more names and faces together. We enjoyed seeing everyone, Can't wait for BOB!
It is a great past time dragging that net around. Next time you decide to visit LBI let me know. I am over across the bay from LBI. We can get together and drag around the bay a little. I have a small 10 foot net and am looking to get a 25 footer shortly. Greg got me hooked on a bigger net, but I think 50 foot would be too much for my kids to handle.
Thanks again everyone, and Jason. The Jacks are eating everything I feed them, including flake. I guess their reef safe, they stay away from my corals. Mike
One of the spotfins passed on this morning but the other is doing great. Eating Blackworms only. I am going again labor day Monday if anyone is interested.
Bummer on the loss. Which one was it? I know the bigger one seemed weak at the beach, but I'm thinking the tiny one may have had some issues starting feeding. Just curious.
We land on that Monday from Jamaica so not such a great day for us to dive. The following weekend seems pretty open so far for us.
