Welcome To NJRC! Take a minute to introduce yourself

Welcome.

Well a lot of people would say a small tank is a waste of money because eventually you will upgrade to a big tank.Dance In all seriousness I started with a 24G tank all in one and the 120 that I upgraded to is much easier to keep right. But they cost a boat load more. Also they take more space. My suggestion is get as large a tank as you are comfortable with money and space wise. There are some tanks for sale here on the site which could save you a bunch depending on the size you want.

Also I will make a plug to join the club as a paying member, the cost is easily offset by the group buys that will be huge in setting up a tank.

PS actually started with a 10 G that was a mess but only fish.

Welcome to the family.
I started with a 44 went to a 120 and now I have been in my 180 for 17 years. I can tell you this the bigger I went the more stable my water parameters are. But everything then cost a hole lot more for a bigger tank.

Welcome Elfrida Ross. You've found a great resource in learning about the hobby and asking questions, that I'm sure you will have. Since it appears that you are new to saltwater, I would not recommend going "big," with your first tank. Yes, water parameters are a touch more stable, but I like to draw similarities to when I learned how to sail. I learned in a very small O'day sailboat, that if you did not have the sails just right, you ended up in the water....it taught you how to sail. I say the same with aquariums, start small, go slow, and learn the right way to take care of a saltwater tank. If you find you enjoy the hobby, you can go big in the future.

My recommendation would be an all-in-one tank....nothing larger than 40 gallons. If you are handy, then I'd look at a "conventional" tank....with this option, I personally like the 40B. Here you can "build" your tank and sump to your exact likings.

Best of luck, and again, welcome.

EDIT TO ADD:

And Dan, I got a good chuckle out of your Freudian slip.....a 180 is a hole into which you dump a whole lot of money!

Hello, as a long time fish keeper of fresh water fish and some fish only saltwater experience I have found myself reading more about reef keeping. It is exciting to see how much interest has developed recently in this area of the hobby. The availability of reef saver, aquacultured and tank raised options are really showing that reef keeping has a positive future. I am just starting my journey with the modest goal of a FOWLR build with some easy corals later on and I could benefit from the knowledge shared here.

The AGA drilled 55g aquarium I ordered will be picked up at Tropiquarium this weekend. My new RODI system is already in place but I have a lot of work ahead of me. You may be wondering why I am starting with the 55g since the general feedback is that it is not a good choice for a reef tank. Sometimes the space you have to work with doesn’t allow for a huge foot print so I will need to be creative with aquascaping. I will share my experiences and ask questions as I go.

Once I get more familiarized with using the forum I will post pictures of my current 37g FO tank. If you like photography you are welcome to visit www.flickr.com/people/hawkwatcher/ my flick page which has lots of photos taken in NJ.

Thanks,
Happy Reef Keeping :)

Hey everybody! My name is Ryan I'm new to the forum. I have a 55 reef which I started on January 11, 2014. All my fish and some coral were from an old tank but I started with all new live rock since the old rock was leeching horribly. Thing are finally starting to settle down and the tank coming along. Super excited for the frag swap this year! image.jpg

Welcome and ask questions. That's one of the best ways to learn in this hobby. Learn from our mishaps.
