Welcome To NJRC! Take a minute to introduce yourself

Hello All .. My name is Keith Buongiorno..Im single.. I live in Frenchtown NJ. Reefkeeping has been a passion of my for quite some time. I also have been in the business side of the aquarium trade at one time.
I am recently getting back into the hobby after many years on the sidelines.

I have kept a 850g (500g tank- 350 sump) reef system which was very sucessful. Being heavy into the hobby i have written a few articals.. which have won awards from the Federation of American Aquarium Societies. I was a very active member of the Brooklyn Aq Society. Did some volunteer work at the N.Y Aquarium too.
My other interests are Drag Racing.. which takes up alot of my time. Bonsai keeping.
As i begin my new setup i hope come to club meetings and meet the faces behind the type.

Take care all

Hello all! My name is George and I live in Blackwood, NJ. I'm new to reefing and joined this club in hopes that I can find locals that might be able to help me get started in the hobby. I'm anxious to have a full fledged reef, but I'm also patient enough to do it right the first time and not rush things.

I have been researching on many reefing forums for about a year now. I was pretty gung-ho last winter when I drilled the side wall of an AGA 135 Gal and installed bulkheads for drain to sump and for a closed loop (bottom was tempered). However, a very unfortunate event happened and the bottom glass panel broke while moving the tank in the garage. I just finished the bulkheads and was about to setup the tank when that happened. :'(

Anyway, I just bought a 4-month old used Oceanic 75 Gal. Reef Ready with a nice 32" high stand that has a nice 8-switch power panel mounted inside, 48" Nova Extreme T5 (10k Daylight and Actinic combo), 30 Gal. Sump w/baffles, Mag 9.5 return pump, 250w "Stealth" heater, and a small clamp-on light with a Helical 26w compact fluorescent bulb (for the fuge compartment in sump), and a digital thermometer. Plus, I got all the live sand and about 50 Gal. of the water from the tank. I also bought the lone clown fish that was a previous tenant of the tank. 8) Old owner said they loved the T5 lights... and when I saw the beautiful corals they had in the tank I can see why. Can't wait to get my own!

So, I have enough to get the tank started and it's currently setup and running. I added about 40 Gal. of salt water to the tank (mixed using water from my new 4-Stage Ro/Di) and I made sure the salinity of the mix matched what I brought from the old tank before putting it in. When the tank was full to proper level and I was able to run the sump pump, I tested the PH, Ammonia, Nitrite, Nitrate (all were in the proper ranges with the ATI test kit) and temp is holding at 76F. I added the clown fish after I felt like the tank was stable and he has been swimming happily for about 24 hours now. By the way, the overflow plumbing was set up perfectly with no noise at all and no "waterfall" action inside the corner overflow section. The light fan has a little bit of a hum, but other than that the tank is silent as can be.

I know I need to add a good skimmer a good powerhead (temporarily using a Rio 1400 but want a Vortech or similar), and eventually an ATO among other equipment but my wallet just got a little lighter over the last couple days, lol.

I also just bought a 20 lb piece of cured Live Rock at Aquarium Center (LFS) and have about 30-40 lbs more in smaller pieces that I want to add once I make sure it doesn't have any copper in it (I tried to cure it before using non-rodi mixed salt water and it all turned green - not sure if that means copper, but I want to be safe). LFS suggested I clean it all with acid and vinegar to bleach out any possible copper, then bring up the water to be tested. (Is this a good idea? and where would I get the acid?)

Well, that's my experience so far. If anyone has any tips or knows of a good deal on a skimmer or powerhead suitable for a 75G tank, please let me know. Oh, also need some tips on keeping Nemo alive! (Sorry, my girlfriend named it) What should I feed the clownfish and how often?

Here are a few pics:

Full Tank/Stand Shot. That's the 20 lb piece of live rock in the middle... I may reshape the sand bed when I put the other rock in -

Stand/Sump. I may change the hinges on the doors so they open all the way, but otherwise this stand rocks! -

Closeup of Sump. Skimmer chamber is 10.5" x 11.5" w/32" cap room, Fuge is 12" x 11.5" x 11" H (Needs Cheato?), Return section is 9.5" x 11.5" x 9" H (Have a filter bag w/ charcoal in it)-

Live Rock I will add later. See all the green pieces? -

Welcome george - nice looking tank . Regarding the LR - what makes you think the 30~40 llbs of LR has copper in it? If it has copper then "curing" the rock will not help - the copper will remain and be lethal to inverts. Frankly if you know for sure it has copper - i'd look elsewhere for more LR for the display. Maybe i might keep the LR for QT...but that's a whole other thread.

If it's uncured - then you just need to cure it - not because it has copper - but because of all the dead stuff in the LR needs to get cleaned out via the curing process.

Clownfish are relatively hardy fish and will eat most any flake or pellet food. Just don't stick a piece of seaweed in there expecting it to be happy.

Hi Patrick, Welcome to NJRC, we're glad you found us. If you ask a lot of questions and do a lot of reading, I'm sure you'll learn enough to be successful in this hobby obsession.

Good choice on the Red Sea Max, BTW, they're really nice tanks. If I weren't in the process of breaking down most of my tanks I'd definitely be getting one of them.

Good luck and I hope you enjoy your time here.

Codfather, welcome! "I'm going to make you an offer you can't refuse."

Great screen name.

You've come to the right place. Make sure you check out "Plans, Ideas & Reference Material for Starting a Reef Tank." You might also want to start a "Tale of the Tank" thread. Also, ask questions....we have a large group of experienced reefers that are waiting to help you out.

My name is John. I am born and raised in NJ. I first fell in love with the hobby while scuba diving in Cancun in 1985. I didn't get my first tank until the early 90's. I was married to my first wife then. Between getting into salt water reefs and computers at the time it is a wonder I stayed married as long as I did. I am over the computer obsession but still obsess with my tanks. Thank goodness my second wife (Diana) loves the hobby as well. She does complain I spend too much money and somewhat too much time on the tanks. She is much more tolerant with the time than the money. I am a big DIY guy. I try to build just because I can or think I can. Sometimes good sometimes not so good. My goals are too automate my setups as much as possible. I am in the process of setting up a 150 gallon tank with a 55 gallon refugium and I am still working on getting this one completed. Last winter I actually went on vacation for 15 days and my two salt water tanks ran themselves the entire time with no problems. I guess that is it in a nutshell.

Hi my name is Jeff I'm a jersey native and reside in the central part of the state.I got interested in reef keeping about 15 years ago when a friend of mine purchased a 80 gallon tank along with a small nano.I was no able to acquire my own tank until i bought my new house a few years back. Now it seems to be a bit of an obsession.I currently have a 125 with a 30 gallon sump.I work in the water treatment field so i think this helps me in my new hobby but still have problem from time to time.Well that's about it for now.

Hello, my name is Rich. I live in Toms River. I've been in and around the hobby for a few years now and I currently have a 10 gallon nano due to the lack of space in my current living arrangements. I hope to be able to move and get something bigger soon. I'm glad to have found this and be a member of such a great community.
